MARY CROSBY: She started it
People in the news Tomorrow is now for 'Annie' NEW YORK (AP) There's no “Tomorrow" for “Annie" on Broadway. The story of Little Orphan Annie, who looks for her parents and finds an adoptive father in billionaire Oliver Warbueks, closed Sunday afternoon at the Uris Theater after its 2,377 th performance, making it seventh in the list of longest-running Broadway musicals. Its original Broadway stars, Andrea McArdle as Annie, Reid Shelton as Daddy Warbueks, no longer bald, and Dorothy Loudon as Miss Hannigan. harridan of the orphanage, came down the grand staircase of the final scene to take a bow on Sunday. They entered a stage absolutely full of past and present “Annie” family, including stage managers, cast members from the four U.S. touring companies and young women who were the little orphans when "Annie" opened on Broadway on April 21. 1977. Mike Nichols and Lewis Allen, who saw “Annie” at the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, Conn., and decided to produce it on Broadway, were on stage. So were choreographer Peter Gennaro and Roger L. Stevens, head of Washington's Kennedy Center, which also became a producer, along with James Nederlander. Orchestrator of the post-curtain festivities, which went on for more than half an hour, was Martin Charnin, who wrote the lyrics and directed the show. Composer Charles Strouse was not present “There have been 21 foreign translations of ‘Annie,’” Charnin said. "It has played in 27 countries, just reopened in London, won seven Tony Awards, has been seen by 20 million people, grossed over $225 million." All the other Broadway Annies also were on stage: Shelley Bruce, the second one, who signed autographs during intermission; Sarah Jessica Parker, the third; and Allison Smith, who played the role the longest for 24 years until September. Other stars of the final cast are Alyson Kirk as Annie, Harve Presnell as Daddy Warbueks and June Havoc as Miss Hannigan. • DALLAS (AP)-Dallas has been guaranteed a whole new crop of Kristins. Kristin, the name of Mary Crosby’s character who shot J.R. Ewing in the television show “Dallas,” was the name of choice for newborn girls in Dallas last year. For newborn boys, the favorite apparently was Christopher, the name of Kristin's son in the popular prime time soap. HOSPITAL OFFICIALS SAID Kristin was by far the most popular name for girls born in Dallas. Medical records show that at Medical City Dallas Hospital and several other hospitals, Christopher was tops for boys. Jennifer and Nicole competed for top honors at Medical City on the girls' side and John or Juan edged out Christopher at St. Paul Hospital. There, the top names for girls were Kristina, Jennifer and Michelle. Kristin was No. 1 at Methodist Central Hospital. There were also some unique names. Porsche Corvette was born at St. Paul Hospital. At Parkland, Darling Monique, Mystical Starr and Precious Starr made their entrances. • MILWAUKEE (AP)~The state legislature urged “public calm in the face of this grave crisis,” and the Society of Addicts of Doonesburv gathered to sadly hoist a few in honor of cartoonist Garry Trudeau, who leaves the comic pages for a 20-month vacation. “Don’t cry for me. Milwaukee. It’s only 20 months,” Trudeau told the society members in a farewell telegram read at the gathering. “Buy around on me and send the tab to the syndicate,” the cartoonist urged. THE DOONESBURY GOODBYE party was the brain child of state Sen. elect Mordecai Lee, who read a copy of a declaration from the Wisconsin Assembly which urged “public calm in the face of this grave crisis.” For the past 12 years, Trudeau, 34, has been penning 8.D., Zonker, Michael J. Doonebury, Joanie, Rick Redfern, Lacey Davenport and others in the daily cartoon that presents thoughts on subjects from women’s rights to nuclear arms to tanning. But beginning Monday, Trudeau is taking time off to write a screenplay and work on a musical version of “Doonesbury.” THIS WEEK’S CELEBRITY BIRTHDAY PEOPLE: Monday’s birthday boys include actor Ray Milland, 75, former Treasury Secretary Michael Blumenthal, 57, and retired hockey star Bobby Hull, 44. Tuesday means No. 69 for actress Jane Wyman and No. 48 for former heavyweight boxing champion Floyd Patterson. Spain’s King Juan Carlos, 45, is a year older Wednesday, while entertainer Danny Thomas, 69, and actress Loretta Young, 70, celebrate on Thursday. Saturday’s cake and candles go out to singer David Bowie.
