BOBBY KNIGHT: What's in a title?

Macy comes off bench to shine with 25 points

By The Associated Press Phoenix effectively replaced Walter Davis with Kyle Macy, while Seattle couldn't handle the absence of Jack Sikma. sc the result of the game was predictable. Macy, making only his second start in 33 games because Davis suffered a bruised thigh on Saturday, had a season-high 25 points and nine assists to lead the Suns to an easy 116-99 triumph over the Super Sonics in a .National Basketball Association game Sunday night. “This kind of reminded me a tittle of last year when I filled in for Walt for a month or so when he had that fractured elbow. He's our leading scorer (18 points per game), but I don’t

Warriors up for Pacers

OAKLAND. Calif. AP) - Indiana Pacer Coach Jack McKinney has been watching the crazy bounces that balls take in the National Basketball Association long enough to know that his team might be in for a skunking. McKinney was in Portland on Saturday night scouting his next opponent, the Golden State Warriors, as they played their worst game of the season in a 102-74 loss. After wishing that his own team had caught the Warriors on this night when nothing was going right, McKinney had a chat with Portland Coach Jack Ramsey. “Well, you know they’re not going to play like this tomorrow

Johnson return Aces' ace in hole

By The Associated Press Richie Johnson, Evansville’ 6-foot-9 forward who has missed the entire college basketball season so far, could see his first action tonight when the Aces end a 13-day layoff with a game at the University of New Orleans. In other games involving Indiana teams tonight, Ball State is at Butler, Indiana State is at St. Louis, Anderson plays at Central Michigan and Earlham visits Franklin. Ball State’s only losses in eight games this season were to Indiana, the nation’s No.l-ranked team, and to Memphis State, rated N 0.2. Evansville stands 4-3 without Johnson, including losses to Indiana State and Purdue. Johnson, the pre-season pick as co-player of the year in the Midwestern City Conference along with Xavier’s Anthony Hicks, underwent knee surgery in November. Johnson averaged 12.2 points and 6.3 rebounds last year as the Aces went 23-6 and won the MCC championship. Johnson started practicing last week and had no pain in his

think we lose that much with me in there.” Macy said. “Even though I’m not used to starting and it felt kind of funny out there for a w hile. I settled down eventually.” Seattle, which lost by 20 points to Los Angeles on Thursday, again played poorly as Sikma sat on the sidelines with a sprained ankle. Without the 6-foot-ll Sikma in the middle, Phoenix enjoyed a 34-21 rebounding edge in the first half, when they jumped ahead 57-40. But Sikma wasn't all the Super Sonics were missing, according to Coach Lenny Wilkens “I am not a psychologist, but our thinking approach to this game was not what we re used

against you guys. They're gonna come out tomorrow shooting up a storm,” Ramsey told McKinney. "Yeah. I’d rather have ’em shoot it up against you, though, coach, instead of against me,” McKinney responded. Unfortunately for the Pacers, McKinney's and Ramsey’s premonition about the change in the Warriors' luck turned out to be true. Golden State improved its offense by 40 points Sunday night and thrashed the Pacers 114-105. "It's NBA basketball and it happens lots of times,” McKinney said. “Last night they were flat as a pancake. They must have missed 13 shots from three feet out in the second quarter.

right knee, which had suffered from a condition known as chondromalacia, a thickening and roughening of the cartilage that surrounds the joints of the knee. “It was great to see Richie playing again,” said Coach Dick Walters. “He was tired from the workout, which is to be expected, but he said he felt no pain in the knee. Leading the Aces in scoring this season is 7-footer Emir Turam, who is averaging 14.7 points a game. Bobby Wallace, a 6-10 forward, is averaging 12.6 points. Evansville is coming off a 9568 loss at Purdue in which Aces’ freshman guard John Worth hit 10 of 16 from the field and scored a career-high 25 points. “We played well for the first 10 minutes against Purdue,” said Walters, “but then we broke down. We’re still looking for leadership on the court with Richie out of the lineup. John Worth is very capable of shooting the ball consistently the w’ay he shot against Purdue. He is a real offensive threat, and he’s going to be a fine player.”

No. 1 Hoosiers' foremost

goal Big 10 title: Knight

BLOOMINGTON. Ind. (AP) - With the likelihood of three or possibly four Big Ten Conference teams being invited to the NCAA basketball tournament, the importance of winning the conference championship has, regrettably, been downplayed in recent years, says Indiana Coach Bob Knight. “I think a lot of people tend to underestimate the value of winning a championship like the Big Ten,” says the coach of the nation’s No.l-ranked team, which has won six conference championships in Knight’s 11 years with the Hoosiers. “Yet I don’t think there is a more rewarding experience ... a greater objective that a team in our league can have than that of winning the Big Ten championship. “And to me, that’s the objective every team should have first and foremost in its mind as it goes into each season, and that certainly is always ours,” Knight said Sunday on his weekly television show. A year ago, four Big Ten teams played in the NCAA tourney. Ohio State lost in the first round, Indiana and lowa w ere beaten in the second round and regular-season league champion Minnesota lost in the regionals. Two other conference teams, Illinois and Purdue, went to the National Invitation Tournament, and Purdue was runnerup to Bradley. Three Big Ten teams were in the NCAA tournament in 1981. when Indiana won its second championship under Knight, and three were in the NCAA tourney in 1980. when Purdue and lowa reached the Final Four. “I think we’re going to see just exactly what the Big Ten is like through the first, maybe, three weeks.” Knight said of the 18-game conference race that begins this week. "I think there have to be six Big Ten games played, and then we’ll have a little bit of an understanding as to who the better teams are going to be.

to,” Wilkens said “Guys are forgetting what they are doing out there They are not moving the ball. I keep hearing too many times. “I forget.’ That is no excuse . ” Lakers 127, Pistons 112 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar scored 28 points and Jamaal Wilkes added 27 as Los Angeles used a torrid-shooting first quarter as a springboard to its seventh straight victory. The Lakers shot 79.2 percent in the first quarter as they jumped to a 42-28 lead. They increased the margin to as many as 19 in the second period, and when Detroit cut the deficit to six in the second half, Los Angeles scored 16 of the next 20 points to regain a comfortable

They were shooting blanks. Joe Barry (Carroll) couldn’t make a goal. He couldn’t miss tonight.” Carroll scored 29 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had five assists against the Pacers. Although frequently criticized by local fans and sports writers, the 7-foot Carroll has a booster in McKinney. “If they don't want him here. I’ll take him,” McKinney said. “I mean the people. I know (Warriors’ Coach) Alvin (Atties) certainly wants him. I think he’s playing well.” Carroll scored 10 points in the first quarter as the Warriors jumped out to a 28-22 lead, then added 14 points in the third quarter.

“I w'as checking the schedules, and there’s a litle bit of a mixture. There are some teams that have played pretty good competition and some that haven’t. There have been some good wins and some losses that have been a bit surprising. We have done as a league very well against outside competition ... So the league, as I look at it. generally speaking, teams have won more games, including our own. than I would have thought possible before the season started. “Now, what that’s an indication of, I’m not really sure,” Knight said. Despite Indiana's 10-0 record going into its conference opener at Ohio State on Saturday. Knight says the Hoosiers are “a long way from being the kind of team that I think we have to be.” Whether the Hoosiers can be title contenders, Knight said. “I really don't know.” “I say that based on two things. No.l, I'm really not sure what kind of a team we have. That has yet to be determined. N 0.2, I don’t know how good the other teams are. For me to be able to say, 'Okay. I think that we can be a contending team,' or. 'I think it’s going to be tough for us to be a contending team,' and usually we can answer in one of those two ways. “Now there have been a couple of times when I've been able to sit here at this time and if not say it, think it, ‘lt's going to be very difficult for anybody to beat us.’ Certainly I feel far from that at this point. “We can’t be as careless as we occasionally are in both our handling of the basketball and in our shot selection.” Knight said. “If we can develop a consistency of performance and efficiency offensively, maintain a level of intensity defensively. then I think we can be a fairly good basketball team.”

nell Valentine added 22 to lead Portland over Denver. The Blazers never trailed as they won their 12th straight home game. Denver, which got 30 points from Kiki Vandeweghe, cut a 60-42 deficit to two points twice in the third quarter, but eight consecutive points by Portland, four of them by Paxson. built its edge to 87-75. Bucks 103. Rockets 82 Sidney Moncrief scored 24 points and Marques Johnson 22 as Milwaukee handed Houston its seventh loss in a row. The Bucks led by 17 points midway through the second quarter, but 11 straight points by the Rockets helped them cut

the margin to 48-41 at halftime. Milwaukee held Houston to one field goal in a five-minute span of the third quarter and Moncrief scored 13 points in the period to make it 75-57 going into the final 12 minutes. Spurs 103, Cavaliers 95 Mike Mitchell scored 14 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter as San Antonio outlasted Cleveland. Mitchell hit his first six shots from the field in the period and the Spurs connected on 11 of their first 12 attempts to turn a 73-73 tie into a 96-84 lead with 5:29 remaining. The Cavaliers, who got 23 points from Cliff Robinson, couldn't get closer than five points after that.
