He was 55 years old and lived on Washington Square North in Manhattan. Broderick won praise for his roles with the Repertory Theater of Lincoln Center in a revival of William Saroyan’s “The Time of Your Life" in 1969 and in A.R. Gurhey Jr.’s “Scenes From American Life" in 1971. In 1980, he was seen in the television film version of "The Shadow Box” directed by Paul Newman and last March, in Jean Shepherd’s “The Great American Fourth of July ... and Other Disasters.” He was Alice’s husband in “Alice’s Restaurant” (1969) and appeared in “Dog Day Afternoon” (1975), “The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3” (1974), “The Group” (1966) and “Girl of the Night” (1960). Born in Charleston, N.H., and raised in Manchester, N.H., Broderick attended the University of New Hampshire, served in the Navy and graduated in 1949 from the Neighborhood Playhouse. After summer stock, including “Time Out for Ginger” with Melvin Douglas in the early 50s, he won attention on television in Horton Foote’s “The Old Beginning” and “The Dancers.” In 1959, Broderick starred in “Brenner” as the younger half of a father-and-son police team, and starting in 1976, he co-starred for five years as the father opposite Sada Thompson in “Family.” He also appeared in “The Bold Ones,” “Run for Your Life,” “The FBI Story” and “Gunsmoke,” and in such specials as “The Iceman Cometh” with Jason Robards and “John Brown” with James Mason. Broderick made his Broadway debut in 1953 in the musical “Maggie” and appeared in “A View From the Bridge” (1957), “Johnny No-Trump” (1967) and “Let Me Hear You Smile” (1973). His Off Broadway credits include “Johnny Johnson” (1956), in which he played the title role; “Two by Saroyan” (1961), in which he won praise for his portrayal of an angry young man, and “Wedding Band” (1972) at the Public. In 1961, he starred with Helen Hayes in "The Glass Menagerie” during a five-month State Department tour of Europe and the Middle East. • LOS ANGELES (AP) Comedian George Burns has been selected to receive the annual Jack Benny Award for Excellence in Entertaining presented by UCLA's Campus Events Commission. Linda Evans, star of television’s "Dynasty,” will make the award Thursday in Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. The presentation traditionally draws more than 2.000 students. Highlights of the 86-year-old Burns’ long career in radio, television and motion pictures will be shown, including several performances with his late wife, Gracie Allen, and Jack Benny, said Bill Feeder of the public relations firm of Rogers & Cowan. LOS ANGELES (AP) Actress Eileen Brennan is being deluged with telephone calls, flowers and cards as she recovers from broken legs and facial fractures suffered when a car hit her on a dark street. Miss Brennan takes the cards and accepts some calls, but doesn’t see the flowers because they aren’t permitted in the intensive care unit, said Christine Plank, spokeswoman at Daniel Freeman Marina Hospital in Marina del Rey. She said the flowers are put in other patients’ rooms. 'Ms. Plank said Miss Brennan, 48, was in good condition Monday and was “improving steadily,” but would remain in intensive care for several more days of observation. The actress was injured Oct. 27 while leaving a restaurant in the seaside community of Venice with actress Goldie Hawn, her nemesis in the film, “Private Benjamin.” Miss Brennan also appears in the television series of the same name.

JAMES BRODERICK: Cancer victim PASO ROBLES, Calif. (AP) King Vidor, an actor, movie producer and director, died Monday of heart failure at the age of 87. Vidor’s credits included the original “Northwest Passage” and “The Champ” in 1931. Vidor directed the nation’s first 70mm film, “Billy the Kid,” in 1930 as well as the 1928 silent-movie comedy, “Show People.” His last movie was “Solomon and Sheba” in 1959. • When it comes to finding proper vehicles, Jon Voight says he has had a problem. But chances are that moviegoers will be seeing more of him in the future than in the recent past. Now he is on the screen in “Lookin’ to Get Out,” of which he was co-writer. It is about a compulsive gambler compulsive but not a gambler.” Next spring, another starring vehicle, “Table for Five,” about a divorced father, should be in the theaters. Voight, who is a divorced father of two children, cast his daughter, Angelina, then 5 and now 7, in the role of his daughter in "Lookin’ to Get Out.” She got the part after it was turned down by Voight’s son, James, now 9. "He said, ‘Why don’t you let Angie do this one.’ ” • Alexander H. Cohen has won a reversal of the original decision in a suit filed by heirs of the Marx Brothers in connection with “A Day in Hollywood- A Night in the Ukraine,” which Cohen produced on Broadway in 1980. In a suit filed in Federal District Court in Manhattan, the heirs contended that the musical had appropriated “their rights of publicity in the names and likenesses of Groucho. Harpo and Chico Marx.” Although the names of the Marx Brothers were not used in the show, the script called for three principal performers to look and act like them. The United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit has ruled that the heirs have no right to royalties from the producers or authors of the musical for using the brothers' likeness and comedic styles. The decision was based on California law, where the brothers lived at the time of their deaths. Cohen applauded the reversal as “a major step forward in protecting the rights of creative persons to employ freely characters such as the Marx Brothers, who are part of our common cultural heritage." • CHICAGO (AP) The Rev. Jesse Jackson, president of Operation PUSH, has been released from a hospital where he was treated for a strained back and exhaustion. Jackson, 41, was discharged Monday from St. Joseph Hospital after a week-long stay. A spokeswoman said he was in excellent condition and that his doctor urged the civil rights leader to limit his travel schedule. PUSH which stands for People United to Serve Humanity has been recently urging boycotts of some large companies to pressure them to deal more with minority businesses.
TV channel spot for Koo Stark? LONDON (AP) - Britain’s first new television channel in 18 years debuts today, despite a storm of controversy over a bill of fare that ranges from American football and “I Love Lucy” reruns to punk rock shows and shocking movies. Chief Executive Jeremy Isaacs predicts Channel 4 will win a 10 percent share of the viewing audience in this nation of 56 million by the end of its second year. But, the veteran 49-year-old TV producer adds: “I know there are banana skins on every square inch of the pavement ahead, and the television adage says ‘lf at first you don’t succeed, you’re fired.’” Channel 4 goes on the air with a noncontroversial word game called “Countdown.” However, for those who tune in during prime-time tonight, the independent channel will feature “Walter,” a movie with lan McKellen in the title role of a mentally handicapped man who is seen sleeping with his mother’s corpse and being sexually attacked by a crippled male midget. A critic called it “one of the most shocking films ever seen on TV.” Channel 4 is Britain’s second commercial station.
Supermarket Shopper Ten most-asked coupon questions answered
By MARTIN SLOANE Here are the 10 most frequently asked questions about coupons, and their answers: Question: Can a coupon be used on the same item that is being advertised on sale? Answer: Most supermarkets will allow you to combine the discount of a manufacturers’ cents-off coupon with their own advertised special discount. QUESTION: DOES a store have to honor a coupon? Answer: No. Stores redeem coupons voluntarily and because of this they are free to establish their own redemption policies, so long as they don’t conflict with the manufacturers’ redemption instructions printed on the coupons. Question: If a coupon does not specify that a particular size product must be purchased, can it be used on any size? Answer: If no size is specified, then it can be used on any size, and this usually includes trial size packages. QUESTION: CAN AN old coupon be used if the product is still being made? Answer: If the coupon has no expiration date and the product is still available, then you should be able to use it. Question: Can you use a cents-off coupon along with a “Buy 1Get 1 Free” coupon? Answer: Coupons can only be used on a product that is purchased, and this means that you can’t use the cents-off coupon on the free item. Can you use it along with the “Buy 1-Get 1 Free” coupon on the item that you are purchasing? If the “Buy 1” coupons says “only one coupon per purchase, then you can’t. If there is no such restriction, you may be able to use both coupons on the last item, depending on the redemption policy of the store. QUESTION: WHAT does “1/20 cent cash value” printed on a coupon mean? Answer: Some states require that all coupons have a cash value. I don’t know of any instance where coupons were redeemed for this cash value. Question: Does an expired coupon have any value? Answer: An expired coupon has absolutely no value. QUESTION: IF a coupon is only good on a particular size item, and that size isn’t available, can you use it on a different size? Answer: No, the store is only permitted to redeem the coupon on a purchase of the specified size. If you have this problem, write to the company and ask for the name of a store in your area that carries the specified size, or an exchange of the coupon for one good on a size that is more readily available. Question: How can I find more of the coupons I need? Answer: Get your non-couponing friends and relatives to save their newspaper food sections and color coupon inserts for you. When a newspaper has more than $1 worth of coupons you can use, buy several copies. It’s one of the best investments you can make. QUESTION: HOW CAN I save more from the coupons I clip 9 Answer: Clip everything - what you can’t use. you can trade! Put all the coupons you can’t use in an envelope and look for opportunities to trade them with couponing friends and neighbors. Why not invite them for coffee and a swap session? Trading coupons will multiply your savings *** SMART SHOPPER AWARD: The Smart Shopper Award goes to Mrs. Kay Baecker of Emerson, N.J. “My local supermarket had Sara Lee pound cakes on sale at
House Call Tourette syndrome and tics discussed
By G. Timothy Johnson, M.D. Question: What is the connection between tics and Tourette syndrome? Answer: Tics are involuntary muscle movements, such as twitching eyelids. Tourette syndrome is a less common disorder which may have tics as one of its symptoms. In other words, the development of a tic does not automatically lead to Tourette syndrome. Most tics are “transient tics of childhood,” meaning they begin in childhood and gradually disappear as the child grows older, usually within a year. Another category of tics is the “chronic motor” variety, which can begin either in childhood or during adulthood, but then usually last a lifetime. Tourette syndrome is a far more serious problem. Starting between ages 2-15, children typically develop involuntary muscle movements that tend to get worse. Additional tics may appear, as well as other very serious and disruptive symptoms, such as foul language and outbreaks of strange vocal sounds. Fortunately, the temporary tics of childhood are the most common. However, when a tic does not go away or increases in severity, parents and physicians should be sensitive to the possibility of more serious problems. An excellent article on tics and Tourette syndrome appears in the July 1982 issue of the Johns Hopkins Medical Journal, which is available at many medical libraries. Question: Is a woman likely to become more sexually active before her period? Could this be due to changes in the hormone level in her body? Answer: A number of studies suggest women tend to become more sexually active between the time of ovulation and the on-
set of their menstrual periods. However, the research is far from conclusive. Many factors--not just hormonal levels--would have an effect on a particular woman's sexual habits. Question: Please tell me about the new medication for herpes. I understand it is supposed to be even better than the herpes drug the Food and Drug Administration just approved. Answer: There is only one drug currently approved by the FDA for herpes: an ointment form of acyclovir (trade name Zovirax), which does not cure herpes but helps healing of sores in an initial herpes infection. The “new” drug you may be referring to is still experimental; it is called Biolf-62 and is similar to acyclovir, though it dissolves in water more easily. Boils-62 requires additional testing before the FDA can consider approving it. I should re-emphasize that no cure for herpes now exists. At present, no drug can completely eliminate the virus. Dear Readers: Certain publications have been advertising “incense,” claiming it provides a “high” like cocaine, only more safely and cheaply. It is neither. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning about the so-called incense and is investigating the deaths of several people who obtained it from one of several supply houses promoting it. In reality, these products consist of various local anesthetics (procaine, lidocaine, tetracaine) and masquerade as cheap substitutes for cocaine. But, like cocaine, they potentially can cause serious problems including death. Local anesthetics should not be used casually or inappropriately. (c) 1982 By Tribune Co. Syndicate, Inc.
