Wedding bells play sour the second time around
By PATRICK YOUNG Newhouse News Service WASHINGTON - Marriage isn’t always better the second time around. A long-term study of divorced men and women finds that remarriage seldom brings an improved feeling of well-being, and that staying single may be the wiser course for some whose first marriage ended in court. “We suspect that for every person who benefits from a remarriage, there is another

whose psychological status is adversely affected by an unsuccessful remarriage,” sociologists Graham B. Spanier and Frank F. Furstenberg Jr. report in the Journal of Marriage and the Family. Most studies of divorce and marriage have compared two separate groups of people divorced vs. married, for example. Spanier and Furstenberg followed the same group of people for 2 1 2 years to see what happened to them. “This is one of the first

studies to look at whether or not those who remarry after divorce are better off than those who do not,” Spanier said in a telephone interview. “It conflicts with the undisputed public notion that the best thing that can happen to someone divorced is to get remarried. ” Spanier of the State University of New York at Stony Brook and Furstenberg of the University of Pennsylvania studied the effects of divorce and remarriage on 180 people living in central Pennsylvania,

primarily in Centre County. “It is probably a fairly representative cross-section of what you find in America at large,” Spanier said. “If you compare our sample with national samples, the demographic differences are not that great.” The two researchers found to their surprise that moving from the divorced state to a second marriage generally doesn’t result in such things as greater satisfaction with life or higher self-esteem. ‘‘We conclude that remarriage after divorce is not associated with enhanced wellbeing,” the two write. “Well-being” is a word commonly used but loosely defined by sociologists. Spanier and Furstenberg used eight measurements to determine well-being including satisfaction with life and health; self-esteem; thoughts of suicide; changes in drinking, smoking and gam-
Heloise: Using wax paper fast method to cut Christmas cookies
DEAR HELOISE: Every holiday, especially Christmas, 1 feel guilty because I haven’t written you this hint. So. this year, I’m giving it to you in plenty of time for the next holiday season. You know how hard it is to make pretty cut-out cookies, especially without using too much flour? We 11... it’s as easy as anything if you roll the dough out on wax paper. Use the cookie cutter and then pull the dough away, leaving your cut-outs on the wax paper. Then bake the cookies on the same wax paper. You can have very thin, crisp cookies that turn out
bling habits; and such physical complaints as insomnia, nervousness, headaches and indigestion. In other words, Spanier said, their use of well-being means “basically how well people have adjusted, their overall quality of life and how comfortable they are with their social environment and psychological states.” Many studies have found that people generally feel an increased sense of well-being following their divorce. The Pennsylvania study found this continues. “Most individuals report greater well-being three to four years after their final separation regardless of their marital status,” Spanier and Furstenberg write. But people vary considerably in just how much better they feel. And the two sociologists could find nothing that predicts who will have the greater sense of well-being after separation

not age, sex, education, whether children are involved or whether the person initiated the divorce or had it forced upon them. ‘‘Undoubtedly, then, variation in well-being during the post-separation period must be attributed to as yet undiscovered influences,” they conclude The researchers found that the greater the sense of wellbeing after divorce, the more likely a person is to remarry. They also found that people with a low sense of well-being after divorce are likely to end up with their initial feelings of failure reinforced in a second marriage. The men and women in the study were interviewed first in the spring of 1977 and again in the summer and fall of 1979. At that time, 35 percent had remarried, 13 percent were single but living with a member of the opposite sex, and 52 percent were unmarried.

Ray Roger TWIST TIE TALK Dear Heloise: It seemed 1 was always losing the twist tie on bread wrappers so instead of using them, I just twist the wrapper a couple of times, then pull it down over the bread, umbrella style (kind of inside out).

It works like a charm and you’ll never have to search for a twist tie again. Connie S. * * * True. Another good way to keep the bread fresh without using a twist tie is to twist the wrapper several times, then lay the loaf of bread on top of this “tail.” Just be careful when picking up the loaf. Don’t dump the whole thing onto the floor. Heloise DECORATE A CUPCAKE
