Worry clinic
By George W. Crane, Ph.D .M.D
CASE A-715: Sybil S., age 46, recently had a lovely silver wedding anniversary banquet. Since I had the pleasure of sitting beside her at the table, she gave the following tribute on how newspapers can help their readers avoid serious mistakes. “Dr. Crane,” she said, “by our sth wedding anniversary, Tom and I were fighting like cats & dogs. “And I had finally decided divorce would be better than to rear our 2 toddlers in such an environment. “But when I asked our pastor for advice, he urged me to defer such a radical decision till I had read your daily ‘Worry Clinic’ for at least 3 months. “Also he handed me a couple of your newspaper booklets, namely, ‘Tests for Husbands & Wives,’ plus your ‘Sex Problems in Marriage’. “Well, from your sex booklet I began to realize how I had been rationing my husband to fit my own limited hunger for what you describe as boudoir cheesecake. “Although I still wasn’t fully convinced, I realized you had a lifelong medical career in counseling couples about their sexual relations. “So I decided to follow your suggestions in that sex booklet for just one month. “Much to my surprise, when I feigned more ardor

and was also more receptive to my husband’s erotic advances, he quit yelling and quarreling. “Instead, he began to punlike a contented housecat and changed his former tart criticisms into real compliments. “Dr. Crane, you were correct when you said a wife cannot long think ill of her mate when he shows he thinks well of her! “Before the month was half over, happiness was restored to our home and our kiddies were spared having divorced parents! “Divorces, I feel sure, would seldom occur if wives understood the fact that men’s sex appetites exceed that of their wives as much or more than husbands’ stomach hungers surpass that of women! “So I gave my daughter those same two booklets a year ago when she was married, and they are as happy as larks.” Wives, before you enter into a divorce, follow Sybil’s example and send for that “Sex Problems in Marriage” booklet, enclosing a long stamped, return envelope, plus 25 1 . For a lonely divorcee’s monthly alimony check is much inferior to a devoted husband who gives you his full love, plus his monthly pay check, too! t

Taught by Arthur Carkeek, of the School of Music faculty, the class has been investigating various historic liturgies of the Christian Church and the music associated with them. Gregorian Chant has a long and continuous history as a musical style going back to the Middle Ages, and the name itself is associated with Gregory the Great, who was Pope from 590604 A.D. Legislature 'B2 Thursday is final day for passage of bills in Hoosier house of origin
By Rep. JOHN THOMAS State District 48 The 1982 Indiana Lesgislature is now past the halfway point, the 18th day of the 30-day session being scheduled for this Thursday. Thursday is also the final day for passage of bills in that house where the bill originated. Thereafter, the House and Senate will each be considering only bills that have already passed the other body. MAJOR ISSUES CONTINUE to be the problems relating to the financial condition of the state. The one gleam of hope appears to be the projected improvement in the economy the last half of this year. It is for that reason that a majority of legislators and state officials believe that we should make very few changes, if any, in our tax structure until we see whether the forecast of the economists is correct. It now appears that the legislature will enact legislation to reaffirm the school financing program adopted last year, namely an authorized increase in school funds available to school boards of approximately five per cent over the current year. A majority of school boards throughout the state found it possible to grant a net average increase of eight per cent in teacher’s salaries from a slightly less funding authorization this year. Two bills which I am co-authoring are the nursing home bill and the retirement home bill. In my opinion, both are very worthy and probably will pass. THE NURSING HOME legislation has been drawn with input from persons representing senior citizens, advocate groups, and the nursing home industry itself. It will clarify and classify the rules and regulations that nursing home operators are required to follow. Likewise, the legislation will set down minimum standards that nursing home residents can expect. Serious violations involving actual or potential harm to the life or serious physical health of the resident will permit the imposition of severe penalties. Less severe violations will be treated by the licen-

sing council with greater flexibility, aimed at correcting the wrong without unduly punishing the proprietor of the nursing home. The retirement home legislation will place the supervision of long-term retirement home care agreements under the jurisdiction of the securities division of the Indiana secretary of state. We have found that many elderly persons have signed a long-term care agreement, giving over most or all of their life savings in return for a long-term or perpetual care agreement. While most owners of retirement homes are honorable and well-intentioned, yet it is felt that such agreements should be closely examined to protect innocent parties from being unwittingly harmed. Evidence indicates that some persons have even been forced to go on welfare due to the financial collapse of the retirement home. I have already taken 18 students as legislative pages, and plan to take at least that many more. From Greencastle High School have come Catherine Sedlack, Laurie Robertson, Jamie Harris and Charollette Carmichael. South Putnam High School has sent Harry Gould, Janie Briones, Rob Tilford and Amelia Woolums. Cloverdale High School has furnished Rhonda Hughes, Dawn Ferguson, Jeff McClane and Jill Swearingen. Also, Shannon Biggs and Larry Burns have come from Brazil High School and Brent Rollings, Rich Bradshaw, Debbie Watts and Jim Sneddon from Van Buren High School. Staunton High School - has sent 45 senior students to visit the State House and the Legislature, with seniors from North Putnam and Greencastle High Schools scheduled to visit in the near future.
