Twice enough Ohio minister fighting to prevent volunteer firefighters' convention
CLYDE, Ohio (AP) A minister who says he looked into the face of sin on his first day in town is fighting a proposal to replay the event he blames for drunkenness and lewdness a volunteer firefighters' convention. The Rev. James Lewis of the 260-member Harvest Temple Church in Clyde packed town hall Tuesday night with about 100 people opposed to the Volunteer Firemans’ Association meeting suggested for the northwestern Ohio community of 5,400 people in the summer of 1983. “This is the hottest thing to hit Clyde since the people tried to recall a member of town council a few years back I don’t remember who,” Lewis said. Lewis led members of his independent fundamental congregation to the town hall on a snowy night to battle what he calls “three days of sin and corruption.” He faced some foes, led by volunteer Fire Chief Don Moyer, who has considerable clout in the community because volunteer firefighters are the only ones around to fight fires. Moyer said the last firefighters’ convention in Clyde in 1973 gave the event a bad name. But he said the gathering earned $13,600 for new firefighting equipment and that motels and campgrounds profited as well. He agreed that the firefighters drank beer and ran fire engines, sirens screaming, well into the night. The minister's other charges, he said, are hearsay.
Living descendents of Jesus? Book angers church leaders
LONDON (AP) Church leaders are angry and most critics unimpressed by a book suggesting Jesus married, staged the crucifixion and has living descendents. But the public today was snapping up copies of “The Holy Blood and The Holy Grail.” Marilyn Edwards, spokeswoman for publishers Jonathan Cape Ltd., called the book’s sales “really phenomenal.” She said two printings had been sold out by Monday, the first day of publication, and another printing of over 10,000 had been ordered. London bookstores that ordered 200 and 300 copies priced at sl7 apiece were reporting their stock exhausted by firstday sales, she said. The book goes on sale in the United States in February. The book by British writer and filmmaker Henry Lincoln, 51, American novelist Richard Leigh, 39, and New Zealand researcher Michael Baigent, 34 is based on more than 10 years of research, including what the authors say are newly ■ discovered and deciphered 'documents that shed new light on medieval history. 1 The essence of their con- < tention is that a secret society
But Lewis said he saw enough his first day in Clyde. “I was coming to town for the first time with my wife,” he said, when the convention was under way. “It was a Sunday morning and there were beer cans all over, people drunk in the streets and halfnaked ladies with their arms draped across men in firetrucks.” “I thought, ‘Man, this is really a good place for a church,”’ he said. “I told my wife right then, if this convention ever returned to town, I’d fight it.” “We’ve already had the convention here twice in 20 years that’s enough,” Lewis said. Lewis told the five-member council he doesn’t want a lot of drunks on the town’s main street, got into a discussion with one council member about whether wine is intoxicating and another about the evils of drinking. One council member asked if Lewis if he would accept a national political convention in Clyde. “The town’s only got about 6,000 people, but 1 wouldn’t want it, no,” he answered. Mayor Patrick Wadsworth halted debate and said council would decide at some later date about whether the firefighters could come to town. The firefighters’ meeting this year is scheduled in Gibsonburg the third weekend in June. Gibsonburg, in Sandusky County, has a population of 2,500. Gibsonburg Fire Chief Carl Paul says he doesn’t anticipate any problems from an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 firefighters and guests.
called the Prieure de Sion was founded in the 11th century, and from that day until this, has been protecting Jesus’ descendents to prepare the way for his return to power through the accession of his divine offspring. Building upon that thesis, the authors propose that the reason Jesus had descendents was that he married Mary Magdalene, had at least one child by her and survived the crucifixion with the help of his disciples and Roman co-conspirators. The book suggests Mary and her children fled to southern France, where their descendents’ bloodline mingled with that of the Franks and came down through the Merovingian kings of the Middle Ages to

modern European noble houses. Jesus’ fate was more obscure, but he was likely to have fled the Middle East, it says. Speaking for the Roman Catholic Church, the Rev. John Crowley, private secretary to Roman Catholic Cardinal Basil Hume, said “The thesis is incredible in the most literal sense.” “What next?” BBC television commentator Barry Norman asked sarcastically: “Son of Jesus Christ?” The Sunday Times took the issue less seriously. It lampooned the book with a cartoon of an angel saying, “If Jesus marries, I hope it’s a nice Jewish girl.”

Based on Psalms 84 Kenyan theme Christians' focus
NEW YORK (AP) - Christians around the world are focusing on a theme suggested by churches of Kenya in Africa, area of the faith’s most dynamic growth, for this week's annual period of prayer for Christian unity. “May all find their home in you, O God,” goes the 1982 theme, based on Psalms 84, expressing the yearning of the Israelites on return from exile. The observance, once competitive between Roman Catholics and Protestants and held at separate times, is now on its 75th anniversary a mutual affair in objectives, timing, suggested prayers and Scripture readings and often in worshipping together. May they “all be one,” Jesus prayed in John 17:20-26, among the readings, “... so the world may believe...” A "major stumbling block” to the church’s mission of projecting Christ to humanity is the scandal of being “fragmented and broken,” says a joint

have become common practices, magnified in the special week of prayers for unity. In a progress report, he says 62 of the priests are, or were until recently, pastors of Episcopal congregations, and two are college professors. The Episcopal church has about 12,300 priests. While “recent events in the Episcopal Church may have precipitated the decisions of some” of the 64 to leave. Law says the basic factor was their concern for Catholic faith,
