Hints from Heloise
DEAR HELOISE: I was wondering if you could help me with a laundry problem. Everytime I buy a new pair of blue jeans and wash them, they come out with light streaks in the denim. I use a liquid laundry soap and softener sheets in the dryer. Do you think there may be something wrong with my washer or are the jeans defective? L.T. ★ * * Glad you asked that
Dear Abby Funerals can be a time of celebration but dancing is nixed
DEAR ABBY: “Confused in Indiana” wrote to say she was “shocked” to learn that a friend went dancing the night she buried her husband. You agreed, saying you thought it was "inappropriate” for mourners to dance so soon after burying a loved one. Who do you think you are to pass judgment in the first place? That woman has the right to mourn her husband any way she wants to! After my father was buried, we went to my cousin’s house where my father had spent many happy hours. He particularly loved the clubroom. Right after the funeral I went down there and found the jukebox playing and all the relatives dancing and enjoying refreshments. On the chair where my father had always sat was a baseball cap made of flowers. (Dad loved baseball.) That was the only floral arrangement that was not left at the cemetery. It was as though my father was there watching everybody do what he loved to do in life. After all, Abby, haven’t you ever heard of an Irish wake? My family is not Irish, but not everyone sits “shivah.” MERRY IN MARYLAND DEAR MERRY: I’ve had many surprises in my mail, but one of the biggest was the number of readers who wrote to disagree with me. You’re right everyone has the right to deal with his grief in his own way, but somehow, dancing the day of the funeral seemed

Faulty manufacturing is blamed for color streaks in jeans
question since, from what my readers write me, this seems to be a widespread problem and they are as fed up with it as you and I are. No, it is not the fault of your washing machine, your dryer and, most of all, you. And, yes, the jeans are defective! (Some say on the label they are made to fade, so we are not talking about those.) Listen to what the International Fabricare Institute has to say on the subject:

You must spend about 24* to mail a check (postage plus cost of check and envelope). PBP costs 10* per transaction. And your PBP account earns interest for you, too. Preparing checks and envelopes for several bills may take 20 or 30 minutes or more, not counting special or side trips to the post office. You can do the same thing with PBP in 2 or 3 minutes and without getting your feet wet! It shows when you paid how much to whom. Users say it is the clearest and most comprehensive month-end financial statement they have ever seen. Your PBP account actually is much more, because it permits you to pay bills by phone or by check. It is your option. We call it the ULTRA ACCOUNT because it is extremely good.
“Streaks in jeans or lines which look bleached are caused by the failure of the surface colors to be fully resistant to the care process. The rubbing off of the surface colors exposes an undyed portion of the fiber. Colors can also rub off and stain the person wearing the jeans. “Who is responsible? The manufacturer which originally dyed the garment! “Drastic color failure of this type can be controlled by better color application of the
inappropriate to me. And it still does. * * * DEAR ABBY: A very close friend of mine, who is a successful management consultant, has the worst case of halitosis I have ever encountered! Being a professional myself, I am worried that my friend’s problem may cost him professionally and socially. He’s single as well. I have polled my friends, and no one has come up with a suitable solution. He is such a lovely person and he must be told. But how? And by whom? HIS FRIEND DEAR FRIEND: He must be made aware of his problem by someone who cares a great deal about him. I nominate you! If you can’t find the words to tell him that he needs to see a dentist and/or a physician about his offensive breath, send him this column. It would be an act of kindness. Trust me. * * * DEAR ABBY: I’m a married woman (early 20s) and this problem concerns my best friend. (I’ll call her Lila.) We are like sisters. Lila has been going with the same fellow (I’ll call him George) for three years and they are practically engaged. George’s grandmother was sick in the hospital, so Lila went to see her and they wouldn’t let her in because “family members only” were allowed to visit. It has caused a terrible rift between George and his family. George sides with Lila and so do I. Abby, don’t you think they should have considered this girl “family”? George’s family say that as long as they are not married, she is not family. George’s grandmother died a week later, and he is still on the outs with them. LILA’S FRIEND DEAR FRIEND: Since George’s grandmother was seriously ill, it is understandable that only family members were allowed to visit. Lila should have checked before going to the hospital.
Notes and Quotes Food variety spells proper diet
BETTY H. SENDMEYER Extension Home Economist Almost every magazine on the newstands has an article every month as a Miracle Diet, telling us to “Eat Only This” or “Never Eat That” - Hogwash!! Most people can’t stay on such diets for long. And some diets are downright dangerous.

fabric in the original dyeing process. Some slight color loss can be expected on a new garment in wear, but this should not result in objectional light areas. “Is there a remedy? None! ” Folks, there is one remedy we as consumers have and that is to take the jeans back to the store where we purchased them and get a refund when this happens to a new pair after only one washing. Perhaps manufacturers will eventually get the message
There’s ONE safe and sane way to diet. This is it -- Eat a wide VARIETY of foods including most of the ones you eat right now. Just eat a LITTLE LESS of everything. Eat one slice of roast beef instead of two. One less pat of butter. One less rich dessert, etc. Eat a BALANCE of foods.
that this is unacceptable and will make a product that will hold its color. I don’t think it is being unreasonable to expect this. We’re not asking for the impossible just value that is fair and reasonable when we pay out our hard-earned money for an item. Agree? DEAR ABBY: I have no sympathy for the 52-year-old woman who married a 60-year-old man (second time around) and found that he was impotent. I am 75 and my husband is 77. When he was 30, due to a bungled operation, he lost all sexual desire. Of course we were both very unhappy about it, but it wasn’t the end of our marriage and it didn’t diminish our love for each other. Over the years we have experienced an intimacy that would not be believed by this present generation, which thinks all there is to marriage is sex. When we cuddle up in each other’s arms on a cold winter night, we achieve a more lasting closeness than those couples who make love for three minutes, then leave each other to go to sleep in separate beds. TRUE LOVERS * * * DEAR ABBY: Will you please settle an argument? I say that schoolteachers are considered “professionals.” Am I correct? My friend says that teaching school is a “job” not a profession. She says that people who practice law and medicine are professionals, but schoolteachers are not. What do you say? MILWAUKEE MISUNDERSTANDING DEAR MILWAUKEE: A professional is anyone who receives remuneration for a job as opposed to an amateur, who does what he does without pay. * * * Getting married?
