House Call Coffee effective?
By G. Timothy Johnson, M.D. DEAR READERS: A while ago, I stated that drinking coffee after drinking alcoholic beverages provides no protection against alcohol’s effects on the ability to drive. Recently, however, I read in a news item that research now indicates coffee may be somewhat heipfull against the effects of alcohol. Answer: The key word is '“Somewhat.” The study, conducted at the Southern California Research Institute in Encino, suggests caffeine may have a modest sobering effect. This is a preliminary finding which needs more confirmation - and it should not be taken to mean that a cup of coffee makes it safe for a drunk to drive. At best, the study shows that coffee may counteract very small amounts of alcohol. But clearly, coffee will not enable an obviously “dead drunk” person to drive safely. Question: Can scabies cause hives? Answer: A lot of things can cause hives -- including scabies. When hives appear, therefore, •it is important to search the entire skin area for possible coincidental or related skin infections. Question: Is it true that children of working mothers have lower IQs than children whose mothers do not work? Answer: An article in the September 1981 issue of a journal called Child Development does suggest that possibility.* However, the tests were performed on a very small group of children, whose average age was 3. There are so many variables that can affect these results that I do not put much stock in them. I think we have a lot more to learn before we can come to any firm conclusions on the complicated and emotional issue. DEAR READERS: In the Oct. 22, 1981, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, a Chicago physician wrote about a man who absorbed some volatile oils from dried red chili

peppers, frequently used in Szechuan and Hunan Chinese foods. The man’s fingertips were scraped and raw from sandpapering some furniture. Apparently, when he later prepared the peppers for cooking, the pepper oils soaked through his irritated skin and caused intense pain. The physician points out that the use of rubber gloves when handling the peppers would have prevented "this ordeal.” Question: Is it true that hot baths are dangerous for people with multiple sclerosis? Answer: An article in the Sept. 4, 1981, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association points out that a hot bath (43 degrees centigrade for 10 to 15 minutes) could cause certain neurological symptions in some individuals with multiple sclerosis. Whether or not this means a hot bath will worsen the symptoms of MS remains to be seen. The authors of the article also suggest that a hot bath may be useful to diagnose or confirm the presence of MS, although it certainly is not a definitive test for the disease. Diabetes affects between four and 10 million people in this country - and the number increases an alarming 6 percent every year. In fact, diabetes is the most common metabolic disorder in humans. Yet it is one of the few medical defects in which the patients can have a major impact on the course of the disease. In his new HEALTHBEAT Special Report, Dr. Johnson tells you what diabetes is and what you can do to control it. Worry clinic

Martin uses a smokescreen to hide his platonic nature. His devoted wife thinks he no longer loves her. She is wrong. But he prefers a worried wife to one who despises him! CASE A-707: Martin J., age 53, is a problem husband. “Dr. Crane,” his wife explained, “we have been happily married for 30 of our 31 years. “But during the past few months, Martin has shown an aversion to kissing me goodbye when he leaves for work in the morning. “Nor will he kiss me when he returns home at night. “And he no longer shows any interest in what you term boudoir cheesecake. “If I try to kiss him or show any affection, he roughly pushes me away. “And now he demands twin beds for he claims my snoring keeps him awake. “But, Dr. Crane, when I have visited my married daughter and slept with her, she positively says I do not snore! “So what has happened to Martin and is it possible for us to restore our formerly happy love for each other?” SEX CAMOUFLAGE Martin has a very attractive wife, slender and devoid of halitosis, dandruff, “B.O.” and such cleanliness defects. “But why doesn’t he love me?” she moans. Martin does love her! But he pushes her away because he fears she will disdain him if she realizes he is platonic! So Martin prefers to keep her worried about his aloofness, rather than turn her away and maybe lose

her via divorce. When husbands cannot function in the sexual role, they become panicky lest their wives will realize that they are impotent. So they concoct a wide variety of sexual camouflage to disguise their reduced libido. Previously, I have cited many of these devices, such as excessive drunkenness, plus addiction to golf and poker parties, sometimes excessive dedication to handling a Boy Scout Troop or a YMCA boys’ group. Others cover up their impotence via being workaholics, so their wives will think their lack of ardor is due to physical exhaustion due to long hours at the office or factory. Sometimes physical poor health, such as anemia and diabetes or tobacco and liquor, may lower their energy level below the 100% libido level. But FEAR is what usually drives a husband into early impotence, for the mind can defeat even massive shots of testosterone! Virile young bridegrooms can even be thrown into a platonic role on their honeymoon with their new bride, due to purely psychological reasons. So Martin’s wife must realize the more he shuns touching her, the more he really loves her but is scared he’ll lose her due to her disdain, if she finds he cannot function in the boudoir.
