M cKIN N EY: Doesn't like what he sees

Everything could still come up roses for USC's Robinson

(c) 1981 Boston Globe BOSTON—John Robinson, coach of the University of Southern California, has told several close friends that he will accept the head coaching job of the New England Patriots if the financial package is right, it has been learned. The offer was made last week, and Robinson, currently preparing his team to play Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Day in Phoenix, told the Patriots he was very interested and would talk with them further after the game. Robinson has told friends of the New England offer. The Patriots were surprised to find that Robinson, who has had tremendous success (59-10-2) as USC head coach the past six years, is so interested in replacing Ron Erhardt. When the story started to leak out last week, Robinson said he would listen to any deal that he sees as “an offer I couldn’t afford to refuse.” But in the past few days he has been backing down from that statement. “The Patriots will have to set him up pretty good,” said a source close to Robinson, who confirmed that his friend has been offered the job “It will have to be a long-term deal worth more than a million dollars, the kind of deal that would set him up for life even if things didn’t work out well in New England.” “The Sullivans (Patriot’s owners) think they have him signed,” says one top NFL executive, who asked to remain anonymous. “Billy has been telling people they think they have him locked up ” One of the interesting aspects of Robinson coming to New England revolves around the top choice in next spring’s college draft, which belongs to the Patriots by virtue of their 2-14 finish. General manager Bucko Kilroy has said the team would select defensive tackle Kenneth Sims of Texas if he clears physically in recovering from a broken ankle, which is reportedly healing well. However, the feeling among those who know what is going on between Robinson and the Patriots is that the coach would want Marcus Allen his fine running back at USC and the 1981 Heisman Trophy winner to be that top choice. It is also interesting to note that the last head coach taken out of the college ranks by the Patriots, Chuck Fairbanks, finished his coaching career at a Sugar Bowl game with

margin bounced between four and eight points until just before halftime when Otterbein scored the final six points for a 42-31 halftime advantage. DePauw narrowed the margin to five with 2:30 left in the contest when all-tourney selection Hathaway and Greg Notestine each hit two free throws. But Otterbein rebuilt its 11-point lead by hitting its free throws.

DEPAUW’S BIGGEST problem was Otterbein’s quickness. The Tigers had more size, as Otterbein’s tallest player was 6-3 center John Denen. However, when a Tiger did pull off a rebound he was immediately harrassed by Otterbein’s guards who often stripped the ball and scored. Otterbein’s 8-3 record has been built against division one and two teams, DePauw being

Spurs win behind Gervin's 46

By The Associated Press When the San Antonio Spurs’ George Gervin takes over, about all the opposition can do is watch. “George is so outstanding it’s difficult to stop him,” says Spurs Coach Stan Albeck. “We take him for granted here, and that’s a shame.” Gervin scored 46 points and helped San Antonio derail San Diego, 119-107, in the National Basketball Association Tuesday night. Gervin’s 16 points in the third quarter short-circuited a San Diego rally that actually put the Clippers up by one point on two occasions. “When George is going like he was tonight! there is not much you can do,” said San Diego’s Michael Brooks, who scored 19 points. San Diego pulled within five, 110-105, with two minutes left, but San Antonio scored nine of the game’s final 11 points. Mike Mitchell had 16 points for San Antonio. Freeman Williams matched Brooks’ scoring output with 19 for the Clippers.

Oklahoma playing Penn State. Joe Paterno coached Penn State that night, and will provide the opposition for Robinson when the latter makes what will most likely be his swan song with the Trojans. Patriots owner Billy Sullivan said last week that money would not prevent the Patriots from getting the coach they wanted. So if that’s the case, we can anticipate Robinson being here for his press conference in about another week, because how much he is offered will make the decision for him. Robinson signed a five-year contract with USC last year. Reports are that his job at the univeristy is worth about $150,000 a year. He lives in a house built for him at the start of his new contract, which is reportedly worth $1 million. The university owns the house; Robinson lives there for nothing. So to make Robinson come to New England, the Patriots will have to make him the highest paid Patriot ever, at about $250,000 a year for five years. The offer flies in the face of what both Billy Sullivan and his son, Chuck, the vice president and financial whiz of the operation, have said about the coaching situation in the last week. Robinson is a college coach ( with a year of pro coaching as an assistant with the Oakland Raiders), and an offensive coach, further, he is known as a nice guy and not big on discipline. Chuck Sullivan, in backing up his father’s statement, said that his family did not want to get involved with college coaches because of the bad experiences it had with Paterno and Fairbanks. Paterno accepted the Patriots’ job for 24 hours in 1973, then backed out after he got a raise from Penn State. This opened the door for Fairbanks. That situation ended five years later with the Sullivans bringing suit against the University of Colorado for tampering with f airbanks while he was under contract to the Patriots. This is why the Patriots will deny this story today. Three years ago they received a $210,000 settlement from Colorado in retui n for letting h airbanks out of the rest of his contract, which ran through 1982. Now they have covertly contacted Robinson.

Coach Mike Steele was not too disappointed by losing to the third ranked small college team in the nation, however, he did feel the Tigers made a few key mistakes. Shockers shocked,Dons dunked all in one night *

By WILLIAM R. BARNARD AP Sports Writer When the nation’s second and eighth ranked college basketball teams are upset on the same night it’s big news. When its happens in a doubleheader in the same building it’s downright shocking. But a championship showdown tonight between 20thranked North Carolina State and unranked Rice is the surprising result of the former’s 6048 beating of No. 2 Wichita State and the latter’s 78-66 victory over No. 8 San Francisco in the Rainbow Classic. And in the true spirit of David and Goliath, it was N.C. State’s little men who prevailed and the Shockers’ big men who fell before a stunned crowd at the Blaisdel Center Arena in Honolulu. “There is no question that our guards (Dereck Whittenburg and Sydney Lowe) did it for us again tonight,” Wolipack Coach Jim Valvano said of his team’s victory over Wichita State. “We wanted them to control the tempo and when we got the lead, they were to spread the court out. They did it well.” “When we started to play good defense in the second half, but we couldn’t get any offense going,” said Wichita State Coach Gene Smithson. “W’e just couldn’t stick it in the hole,

87 early in the fourth quarter, but in the next 4:08, Russell and Sly Williams led a run that put New York up by seven, 101-94. Russell wound up with 24 points and Williams had 19. David Greenwood led Chicago with 19 points. Mavericks 104, Kings 92 Jay Vincent, who has become Dallas’ top scorer since the injury of Mark Aguirre, poured in 41 points, one short of Aguirre’s team record set earlier this season. Hawks 102, Rockets 93 Dan Roundifled scored 10 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter as Atlanta pulled away from

especially from the outside when N.C. State packed the zone.” Forward Thurl Bailey with 23 points, Whittenburg with 22 and Lowe, who quarterbacked the offense, were the keys to the victory by the Wolfpack, 9-0. NC State employed a tight 2-3 zone the whole game to effectively shut down the Shockers big front wall of Antoine Carr, Jay Jackson and Cliff Levingston. Levingston had 11 points and Cayr 10. “That was probably the biggest game in our school’s history. I don’t think we’ve ever won a game like this,” saU Rice Coach Tommy Suitts, whose Owls improved to 7-4. “It’s a difficult game for the San Francisco Dons to accept, but it simply wasn’t meant to be,” said Coach Pete Barry, whose club fell to 10-1. Rice was led by Renaldo O’Neal with 24 points while Ricky Pierce added 15. San Francisco watsed a sensational 39-point performance by Quintin Dailey. Other Top Ten Top-ranked North Carolina, playing without injured center Sam Perkins, got 21 points from Michael Jordan and 19 from James Worthy to defeat Santa Clara. Jordan, a freshman guard, also had 10 rebounds for the Tar Heels, now 8-0. Perkins,

Nuggets 128, Celtics 123 Denver won its fifth game in six, getting 32 points from Alex English and 22 from Kiki Vandeweghe. English scored 10 of his points in the forth quarter, including a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left The loss was only the seventh in 27 games for the Celtics, who were paced by Larry Bird, with 27 points, and Nate Archibald, with 26. Lakers 121, Jazz 114 Jamaal Wilkes helped the Lakers hold off a late Utah charge, and the Lakers won their sixth game in a row. The Lakers led by 19 points late in the fourth quarter, but Utah cut the lead to four with a little more than a minute to play. Wilkes then hit a jumper that put the Lakers up by six with 1:04 left and sealed the victory. Norm Nixon had 25 points and 10 assists for Los Angeles. Adrian Dantley scored a gamehigh 40 points for the Jazz.

Milwaukee won in rebounding 55-51. Nelson noted the Bucks had 13 offensive rebounds and at one point had four shots on one trip down the court. “Thaf s one thing we worked on during our Christmas minicamp,” I)e said. “It’s a priority with us. If the inside isn’t there, then we go strong to the offensive boards.” “Rebounding is a definite concern of ours,” McKinney said. “It looked like they whipped us. I don’t know what to do about it.
