Henry Fonda stars in new TV drama
By JERRY KRUPNICK Newhouse News Service NEW YORK - Henry Fonda has always succeeded in taking a characterization and making it spring three-dimensionally from the screen. No form of acting comedy, drama, high adventure has been beyond his ability. And he has excelled in every acting medium stage, film and television, which so many of his contemporaries shun. Unlike those others, Fonda always has embraced television as a legitimate arena where The dramatist and actor can display their best talents. We vividly remember $ barbecue at the old Disney ranch in California, where “Roots II” was being shot on location. Even though his role was small and he was to appear in only two of the segments, Fonda was thoroughly involved with the production and convinced of its value and quality. We sat with him during that dinner and asked why an actor of his stature remained with television. “The answer should be obvious,” he said in that familiar, laconic drawl. “Look around here, look at this production, look at these people. We are all actors, we are all dedicated to our craft, we are all doing what we love to do and feel we can do best. “There is no difference to me between the big or small screen, just as there’s no great chasm between the stage and film. The techniques may be different, but the end result is the same. We are creating an illusion in every one of the mediums; we are doing

something magical that we hope will set the mind and heart of the audience ablaze. If we are truly actors, we act, no matter where or how.” Fonda returns to the small screen at 10 p.m. EST Wednesday with Myrna Loy in “Summer Solstice.” Fonda’s accepting the role in the first place is another testimonial to his dedication as an actor. “Summer Solstice” is not a network project, but was filmed by a local Boston station and intended for local showing. But ABC picked it up after that initial broadcast and is giving it national exposure. Still, Fonda knew nothing of the future plans for the play when he took it on. He had just finished “On Golden Pond” with Katharine Hepburn, a long summer shoot in New Hampshire, when he was approached about the TV script, which had just won an award for young playwright Bill Phillips and was about to be produced by WCVB-TV in Boston. Fonda agreed to stop off at Cape Cod to discuss the new TV production and found plenty to interest him in this touching drama about the reminiscences of an elderly couple revisiting the beach where they met and fell in love 50 years earlier. “It’s a marvelous play,” Fonda said, “and I welcome the opportunity to play in it... and to play opposite Myrna Loy, whom I have always loved as a person and an actress.” This is a stunning production only one hour long, and it is given its best shot by Fonda and the others in the sterling cast.
