M ELISSA GILBERT: Older, wiser

Melissa maturing on 'Little House'

By Jay Bobbin The many devoted followers of “Little House on the Prairie” are not surprised that Laura Ingalls Wilder is coming of age. After all, she’s now a married woman and a mother-to-be. As the character of Laura has grown older and wiser, so has the actress who plays her, Melissa Gilbert. The teen-age Melissa has reached beyond her series role to deliver memorable performances in television versions of three films, “The Miracle Worker,” “The Diary Of Anne Frank” and “Splendor in the Grass.” But why hasn’t she starred in any original TV films? “That’s mainly because I haven’t found anything new that’s as wonderful and inspirational as I’d like.” Melissa explains. "I look for both inspiration and strength in the roles I play.” She chooses her projects through her own company, Half-Pint Productions, which got its name from Michael Landon’s nickname for Melissa on the “Little House” set. Melissa will soon have more time to seek new parts,

since all signs point to the current season being the final one for “Little House.” Every year the cast of the show has said it will be its last, but this year, Melissa doesn’t think it’s just a rumor. She has “a lot of other commitments not so much to other people as to myself. I told myself that I’ve got to go back to school. I haven’t been working that much this year, and I’ve had lots of time off, so I’ve just been sitting around not doing anything. I’m going to college full-time next year.” Like that of other child stars, Melissa’s growing process has been shared with viewers around the world. “I feel good about that,” she says. “I learned my work and the professionalism that goes with it at an early age. I'll be able to carry that with me when I do other shows. “It’s fun to look back, though, and watch earlier episodes. I spend most of the time laughing at how my teeth looked and how everybody else’s voice sounded. Then, I look at the modern ones to compare them.”
