Minnick trial
Continued from page 1 but stated he would discuss such action with Clay Circuit Court Judge Ernest Yelton. Vaughn said the combining would be done if Yelton, Brewer and Nasser agreed to such a move. Nasser related Monday morning that if ihe consolidation is discussed, it would be solely on an informal basis. But just before noon Monday, Brewer told the Banner-Graphic arraignment on the escape charges would be held in Putnam Circuit Court before Judge Vaughn. The decision was made as to not produce additional publicity which may affect Minnick’s trial on murder charges in Clay County. BREWER NOTED he anticipates the murder trial may take between a week to two weeks to complete. The 18-year-old suspect’s attorney declined to say if he would use an insanity defense for his client, until further investigation is completed. EARLIER, Greencastle attorney Stephen Pierson, serving as Minnick’s court-appointed lawyer, filed a motion for that defense. Nasser said later that move was done as a precautionary measure, since there is a time limit for an insanity defense motion to be filed. Minnick, now lodged at the Vigo County Jail, will not appear at Monday’s hearing, Nasser said.

State weather prompts snowmobile sales boom
By The Associated Press The high cost of gasoline and the effects of two near-snowless winters in Indiana have cut into the growth of the snowmobile trend, but now area merchants say Hoosiers are back in the motorized sleighs again. “We’re going nuts,” said Ron Osborne, a Westfield dealer who, in five days last week, sold 30 percent of what he sold in all of 1980. “These people don’t care a damn about interest rates, they want to get out there on the snow.” At Noblesville, dealer Michael David Lewis said he sold his entire 20-machine inventory last week, at prices ranging from $1,295 to $4,000. Last year, he sold 25 machines over the whole season. Sgt. Dennis Eggers, outdoor educator for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, ssays new snowmobile owners who are either unfamiliar with

their machines or the terrain run the greatest risk of accidents. This year, there were two snowmobile-related deaths, including a 9-year-old boy who was killed Dec. 19. There have been 50 recorded snowmobile accidents resulting in injuries, Eggers said. “The problem is that Indiana is still pretty new to the snowmobile,” Eggers said. “Our seaons usually doesn’t last long enough for operators to become really experienced with their machines.” Eggers added that public snowmobile safety classes have not been very useful because public schools are reluctant to include the six-hour safety instruction as part of the regular curriculum, and some owners are apathetic about attending the classes. State law allows snowmobile operators at least 16 years old

with regular driver’s licenses to use road right-of-ways. Operators younger than 16 may drive snowmobiles only on private property. Those younger than 14 must be accompanies by a parent or guardian. Officials at the division of outdoor recreation estimate the 50,000 registered Indiana snowmobile owners live within an hour’s drive of most public trails. The Indiana Snowmobile Association offered several safety tips for what promises to be a long snowmobiling season: —Wear a helmet. —Turn on headlights. —Use hand signals to indicate turns and pass on the left. —Try to ride with a partner. —Watch for objects like fences, tree stumps or guide wires that may be hidden by snow covered fields.
