Loni Anderson out to prove she's not just a pretty face

By Jay Bobbin After several seasons as .radio station receptionist Jennifer Marlowe on the CBC comedy hit “WKRP in Cincinnati,” Loni Anderson wants to stretch her acting boundaries as far as she can. She has one goal in mind: to prove to viewers that Loni Anderson is more than just a pretty face. “This year on the show, I’ve been trying to make Jennifer a little more vulnerable,” she says, “just so she seems more real. Somebody who seems to be that perfect all the time is a little hard to swallow.” Jennifer has appeared to know the solution to every problem that could possibly arise, in both her personal and professional lives. Miss Anderson feels that a few weaknesses would enhance the character, “because we’ve already seen the character’s strengths.” “WKRP” had low ratings when it first premiered in 1978, and was removed from the weekly schedule for several months while certain creative changes were made. “Even when we were taken off the air and continued to work on the program,” she says, “I don’t think any of us ever doubted there would be another chance. I’m basically a positive person anyway, so when I feel strongly about something, I just let it happen.” Miss Anderson won two Emmy nominations for “WKRP,” and the program’s eventual success made it possible for her to choose some diversified roles in other productions. She starred as the late actress Jayne Mansfield in a TV movie last year, and played a Chicago flapper

of the Depression era in last month’s drama “Sizzle.” The latter film also allowed Miss Anderson to showcase a not often used talent that helped her launch a stage career almost a decade ago: “I’ve always been singing, but I don’t consider myself a singer, I’m an actress who happens to sing. I never wanted to make a record or bore anybody with ‘The Loni Anderson Variety Hour,’ so ‘Sizzle’ was a perfect opportunity for me to use singing as a nice, added aspect to the film.” Miss Anderson claims the film had the qualities she is seeking in future scripts. “I got to be dramatic, and I even got to be ugly,” she says. “It’s funny for me to say that, I guess, but I think that people can get bored with too much glamour. They want to see you be able to do something else, and I also want to see that in myself. So I really enjoy having to do something different and letting the audience see that.”.

She is probably best known to TV audiences as Emily Hartley, the schoolteacher wife of a Chicago psychologist on the CBS sitcom “The Bob Newhart Show.”
