Warped records given new life
DEAR HELOISE: How can you straighten a warped phonograph record? Phil Mauk * * * Got a warm spot in your house, like the top of a TV' set? Just place the record on top of a flat, warm surface, then stack a few heavy books on top. Leave it that way for several hours or days, depending on the damage, and your records should be as flat as pancakes once again! Heloise ELECTRIC BLANKETS Dear Heloise: When an electric blanket finally refuses to function any longer, I rip out all the wiring and threads which hold the wiring in place and use it as a nice, extra blanket for guests. The wires can be stripped out easily by cutting tiny slits at the end of the wires at the head and foot of the blanket. Just grab hold and pull them out. On some blankets it may be necessary to remove the binding, cut the wires, then pull them out. You’ll end up with a blanket that can be easily laundered and still be useful for many more years. L. HOT ROLLS Dear Heloise: When making hot rolls, to help them rise a little faster, I place a heating pad on my counter top, plug it in and turn it to high. I then place my pan of dough on top of the heating pad. The dough rises evenly and properly. W.G. FLOOR COVERING Dear Heloise: This may not be a new idea to you or to many of your readers, but I was happy to find that using remnants of vinyl floor covering as shelf paper is great! It never curls on the edges or shifts around and it’s easy to wipe clean. Very durable for pantry shelves as well as those that take a beating, like where pans and small appliances are stored. J.P. STOCKING HANGER Dear Heloise: Since we don’t have the traditional fireplace mantle on which to hang our children’s stockings, we use a planter pole. The pole is decorated like a candy cane. Each little arm holds a stocking anticipating Santa’s visit. L.W. HINTS FROM HIM Dear Heloise: When baby graduates from a baby tub to
the large adult-sized bathtub, buy a sturdy plastic laundry basket with mesh sides. An oblong shape works best, as it gives baby more room. Just set the laundry basket into the large tub, fill the tub to the proper water level, then set baby inside the laundry basket. The child will feel more secure plus you can put the water toys right inside the basket with baby where they won’t go floating off. There’s less danger of baby slipping and baby seems less frightened. Grampa BRACELET HOOKING Dear Heloise: Many people, especially if they are shaky or have poor eyesight, have trouble hooking those tiny bracelets on their arms. To solve the problem, tape one end of the bracelet to your wrist and hook the opposite end onto it. No losing grip of the bracelet and it’s easily hooked. Kerry Dißlasie ★ * * If you’re baffled by a housekeeping dilemma, could be you’ll find the answer in “Help! from Heloise” (Arbor House), the new problemsolution book by Heloise.
