Taylor thinking about playoffs
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) Lawrence Taylor says becoming the first rookie linebacker in a decade to make the National Football League Pro Bowl “no big deal.” “It’s nothing. I’m not going to get all that excited about it,” said Taylor, who remains an unassuming newcomer. “It’s going to be nice, but we need to get to the playoffs. “If we win, all I’ve wished for will come true,” he said between workouts for Saturday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, a team the Giants must beat if they hope to make the NFC playoffs as a wild-card team. Taylor was the second player chosen overall in the 1981 NFL college draft. The last All-Pro rookie linebacker was Isiah Robertson, who joined the Rams in 1971. This season’s Pro Bowl Game will be played Jan. 31 at Honolulu. Giants veteran Brad Van Pelt said Taylor is the best rookie linebacker he has played with or against in the NFL. “I’ve been here nine years and I’ve yet to see a rookie come in and dominate at his position like he does,” said Van Pelt, a Giants linebacker who has made five Pro Bowl appearances.

“I’ve said from day one that he seemed more like a four-or five-year player than a rookie. He could be the best linebacker the Giants ever had and that’s all the way back to day one,” Van Pelt said. “He’s one of the two best linebackers in the league now,” said Dan Klosterman, the Los Angeles Rams’ general manager. “He’s already up there in a class with Jack Lambert of the Steelers, that’s how good he is. And he seems to get better every week.” Yet, the outstanding rookie year included some sobering experiences for the former University of North Carolina standout. In the days preceding the draft, Taylor talked with glowing anticipation about how much his hefty NFL salary would provide for his family in Williamsburg, Va. He outlined plans to buy a new home for his two brothers, mother and father, who labored for 20 years in the Newport News shipyards. And on April 28, after hundreds of fans at NFL draft headquarters burst into wild cheers as the Giants announced Taylor’s name, the young linebacker was filled with the joy of dreams come true. “I’m working on a deal to get

Giants must beat Cowboys to make NFL playoffs
c. 1981 N.Y. Times News Service NEW YORK Four of the National Football League’s 10 playoff positions are still to be filled, and 10 teams remain in contention as the 16-game regular season ends this weekend. The sorting out begins Saturday, when the Giants take on the Dallas Cowboys at Giants Stadium. In Miami the Dolphins play the Buffalo Bills to decide the title in the American Conference East. The Cowboys, Dolphins and Bills have all qualified for the playoffs, Dallas as a divisional champion in the National Conference; Miami and Buffalo for wild-card berths at the least in the American Conference. The second American Conference wild-card spot will go to the Jets if they can beat the Green Bay Packers at Shea Stadium on Sunday. If they do not the Jets can still qualify provided Oakland beats San Diego in the final Monday night game. Other teams already in the playoffs are the San Francisco 49ers, National Conference West champions; the Philadelphia Eagles, with a National Conference wild-card berth, and the Bengals, American Conference Central champions. The National Conference Central Division winner will be decided in the Silverdome at Pontiac, Mich., on Sunday when the Lions take on the Buccaneers, tied with 8-7 records. The other undetermined division race is in the American Conference West where Denver leads San Diego by one game. The Broncos can clinch by beating the Bears in Chicago. If Denver loses, the Chargers can take the title with a victory over Oakland, on the basis of a better record than Denver within the division. The Giants are one of seven clubs in contention for the second National Conference wild-card position, and they will qualify for the playoffs if they can beat the Cowboys, provided the Jets defeat the Packers. So the playoff destiny of the two New York teams is intertwined. The Giants’ competition includes the Packers, Buccaneers, Lions, Falcons, Vikings and Redskins. Six of these seven teams could conclude with 8-8 records, and there are 64 combinations possible to sort out the tie to produce one wild-card playoff team. Previews of all games follow (records in parenthese; betting lines from Harrah’s Reno Sports Book).
Fans offering to pay Fouts' dues so he can play
SAN DIEGO (AP) - Confronted with a rebellious member, the National Football League Players’ Association faces a thorny new issue: can a fan pay union dues for San Diego Chargers’ quarterback Dan Fouts?
Offensive line biggest reason Bengals winning
CINCINNATI (AP) - Few people seem to notice them, but the members Cincinnati Begnals offensive line, who made possible the team’s American Football Conference Central Division championship, live in their own world. The call themselves Hopper, The Tool, The Duck, The Bailer and The Triangle. The nicknames reflect their individual styles of line play. They are left tackle Anthony Munoz, left guard Dave Lapham, center Blair Bush, right guard Max Montoya and right tackle Mike Wilson. Offensive line coach Jim McNally calls them “a different breed of cat,” these massive men whose names are most
my mother a house. She’s done so much for me,” he said from his dormitory. “I’m ready to get into the swing of things. I’m happy as a lark.” But within hours, the heady feeling came crashing down, and Taylor found himself confused and distraught. Giants veterans, upset by reports that Taylor was about to sign a three-year, $750,000 contract, were publicly complaining about their relatively low wages the top salary was $145,000 and threatening a walkout. “This kid’s a good, clean country boy,” said Ivery Black, one of Taylor’s agents. “He’s not used to the stuff that goes on with a pro football career, and I told him not to worry if they’re talking about him.” But Taylor did worry, and was wracked with despair when, a few days after the draft, his best friend’s hopes for a pro football career were dashed by a terrible car accident on a rain-slick road not far from the Chapel Hill campus. Steve Streater, a Tar Heel teammate, was left paralyzed in North Carolina Memorial Hospital and doctors say there is a chance he may never walk again.
Two fans, one a 68-year-old retired butcher from Germany, sent the cashiers’ checks to the NFLPA to cover the $1,122 that Fouts owes in 1981 dues. Leaders of the players’ union were scheduled to consider the matter at a meeting today in
frequently mentioned over the public address system when they are called for penalties. There are no statistics kept by the National Football League on these players, except penalties. But they don’t seem to mind. “Publicity would help in getting commercial endorsements” said Montoya. “But I’ve been playing the offensive line all my life and I ha ve no way of judging. ’ ’ Munoz, who in his second year was named All-Pro, is very quiet and polite, despite his 6-foot-6,278-pound frame. “I think if he knew what kind of dominating figure he could be, it would scare him,” said McNally. “He rarely angers.
Taylor canceled his first Giants Stadium news conference and rushed immediately to his friend’s side, deciding right away to dedicate the 1981 season, along with his prayers, to Streater’s recovery. “It really hit me when he had that accident,” Taylor recalled, speaking softly in his mild Southern accent. “I didn’t think God would do that, maim him for life. He’s a beautiful human being.” When Taylor returned from his first visit with Streater, he was pleasantly surprised to find the Giants veterans greeting him warmly and assuring him their complaints were direv :d at upper management. There was no walkout and Taylor quickly endeared himself to the squad in training camp through his diligence at practice and his good-natured antics off the field. As the season progressed, Taylor remained quiet, funny and polite, playing basketball with his teammates when he wasn’t working out in practice. And every Sunday, he transformed his easy-going personality into a ferocious presence, sacking quarterbacks like a cat pouncing on mice.
NATIONAL CONFERENCE Dallas (12-3) at Giants (8-7) (Saturday) Once more it will be up to the Giant defense to produce turnovers or even the touchdowns. Although its defense has given up almost 18 points a game, this Cowboy team has turned out to be one of the better ones, a Super Bowl contender. Betting line: Dallas by 3. Tampa Bay (8-7) at Detroit (8-7) The Buccaneers won the earlier game, 28-10, on Oct. 4. The Lions have won four of their last five, the Buccaneers three of their last four. Betting line: Detroit by s*^. St. Louis (7-8) at Philadelphia (9-6) The Eagles failed to score a touchdown in the second halves of th6ir last four games, all of which they lost. Betting line: Philadelphia by 9. San Francisco (12-3) at New Orleans (4-11) The 49ers’ motivation to win is assurance of having the home field should they play in the conference championship game Jan. 10, against the Cowboys or whomever. The Cowboys cannot get the home field for the NFC championship game against the 49ers should that game occur because the 49ers routed the Cowboys 45-14 earlier this year. Betting line: San Francisco by 7. Washington (7-8) at Los Angeles (6-9) The Redskins could make the playoffs provided that a long series of unlikely events come to pass. The Rams can’t wait to make this season history. Betting line: Even. AMERICAN CONFERENCE Buffalo (10-5) at Miami (10-4-1) (Saturday) This could be a preview of the American Conference championship game. Miami’s best running back, Tony Nathan, has an injured knee although expected to play. But Don McNeal, the cornerback, is out with an arm fracture and a rookie, Fulton Walker, starts. The Bills’ best runner, Joe Cribbs, has been at his best in the last two games after an injury. Betting line: Miami by 2M>. Pittsburgh (8-7) at Houston (6-9) A might-have-been match. The Oilers were 11-5 last season and made the playoffs. Then the owner, Bud Adams, dismissed the coach, Bum Phillips. That may, or may not, have had an effect on the team. The Steelers, who were 9-7 last year and missed the playoffs, are clearly not the team they once were. Betting line: Houston by 1.
Washington, D.C. Fouts, the NFL’s passing king the past two years, is threatened with suspension if his dues are not paid prior to Monday night’s game against Oakland the final regular season NFL game.
Once, in the San Diego game, a referee called him for holding when the penalty was actually on Wilson. Munoz (Hopper) just scowled at the ref. Lapham got his nickname as The Tool because he has played all the offensive line positions. “He knows a lot about other players around the league. He can tell me who’s on injured reserve, who’s starting. He knows a lot about other defensive linemen. He familiarizes me and the other players with the league,” said McNally. Bush is called The Duck because of the way he runs. He’s also a student of the game and calls the blocking assignments from the line of scrimmage.
Taylor is credited with 10 sacks, 91 tackles and one interception with one regularseason game to go. Taylor appears unaffected by the plaudits. “He’s still the same person. He hasn’t changed as far as getting a big head or anything,” said rookie tight end Dave Young, Taylor’s roommate. “He’s just having fun, and when you have fun, you don’t put much emphasis on the honors.” Nevada-Reno lost to Idaho State in 1981, 23-7, despite making 509 yards on total offense without scoring a touchdown. Nevada-Reno’s points came on a field goal and two safeties.

New England (2-13) at Baltimore (1-14) advantage of both not to win this game. The one that loses wijl finish last in the American Conference East and have the poorest record in the league. That will mean first choice in next spring’s draft and an easier schedule for next season. A tie between the two in the standings at 2-14 would break in Baltimorels favor, or disfavor. Betting line: New England by IV 2 . Cleveland (5-10) at Seattle (5-10) Cleveland will give playing time to another quarterback, Paul McDonald, and Calvin Hill plays his last game. The Browns are one of four 1980 playoff teams already eliminated from this year’s tournament, the others being Houston, Los Angeles and Oakland. Betting line: Seattle by l‘/2. INTERCONFERENCE Green Bay (8-7) at Jets (9-5-1) Even if they double cover the renowned Packer wide receivers, James Lofton and John Jefferson, the Jet defense will have a lot of trouble with the tight end, Paul Coffman, and the fullback, Gerry Ellis. Betting line: Jets by 3 l Cincinnati (11-4) at Atlanta (7-8) A victory is important for the Bengals to guarantee home-field position in the American Conference playoffs. Two-thirds of all playoff contests since 1970 have been won by home teams. Betting line: Even. Denver (10-5) at Chicago (5-10) Beware the Bears, who finally put an offense together in their past three games, winning the last two. This is a final game for retiring Alan Page. The Broncos’ defense, the heart of the team, has tightened up lately. Betting line: Denver by 3V 2 . Kansas City (8-7) at Minnesota (7-8) This will be the last home game outdoors for the Vikings, who next year move from the Met in Bloomington to a new indoor stadium in downtown Minneapolis. Their quarterback, Tommy Kramer, has had 11 passes intercepted in the last three games, all losses.
