Junior varsity title game to feature Cubs, Eagles
By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Defending champion Greencastle and host South Putnam will meet in the championship game of the Putnam County Junior Varsity basketball tournament Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. at South Putnam, weather permitting. Both Wednesday night winners held off second half rallies to advance to the title game. Greencastle kept Cloverdale at bay 40-36 and South held off North Putnam 45-36, a final score set after the final buzzer sounded by a David McGaughey free throw. ; GREENCASTLE’S win was a lot easier than it sounds, however, Cloverdale’s free throw shooting might be the difference. The Tiger Cubs led 11-9 at the first stop and built a 23-12 halftime margin. ‘The now 2-3 Cubs took as much as a 15-point lead in the third quarter and led 37-24 when the last eight minutes started. "They had been running a halfcourt trap on us and in the third quarter we handled it,” coach Jeff Miller said, “but in the fourth quarter we just quit going to the hole.” -Cloverdale cut the margin clown to three points late in the contest and had an opportunity to get within one, but missed

AVON--Brian Haltom remained undefeated, but other than that very little else went Cloverdale’s way in a 51-12 loss to Avon in high school wrestling Tuesday night. Haltom raised his 112-pound record to 6-0 for the season with a 7-2 decision over Scott Cannotsey. Rany Pittman at 167 pounds and Wes Young at 185 pounds were the only other Cloverdale winners at Avon. Pittman won a 7-1 decision and Young pinned his opponent in the first period. KEITH JOHNSON, who went to the IHSAA state championship meet last year, suffered his first defeat and extended a career jinx. Greg FYeige won a 4-0 decision over Jphnson, leaving the Clover’s record at 6-1. “He gets closer ejferytime,” coach Dave Kiley ssid of Johnson’s quest to beat FJeige just one time. thought the Clovers wj;re going to get another victory in the 132 pound class. two free throws. The Clovers were only .500 ( 6-12) from the line for the game. DAVID SMITH LED a balanced Greencastle attack with 13 points, followed by Devon Sutherlin with 11 and Jeff Jobe with 10. Jon Kennedy and Bobby Speedy paced Cloverdale with 10 points each. Greencastle ripped the nets for 51 per cent (19-37) from the floor and won the rebounding battle 28-17. Jobe led the board effort with nine, followed by Meyer with seven and Gould and Smith with five each. “We had some pretty good rebounding,” Miller said. Roger Shrum led the Clovers with five rebounds, while Bryan Scott and Speedy each pulled down four SOUTH SHOT 53 percent (1732) from the floor and North didn’t get its offense in gear until the fourth quarter, as the Eagles pretty well coasted into the championship game. South jumped out to a 6-0 lead showing great patience against the North zone defense. “Sure, we took real good shots, but more importantly than that is what we did on the other end,” coach Dan Puckett said. “Our defense was really good in the first half.” North coach Bruce Boling
second period by Avon’s Mike Gaskins. Boler led 9-0 on the scorebook when the second period opened. JEFF McCLANE IS also 6-1 after losing his first match of the season. McClane lost a 9-6 decision in the 155 pound class. Not only did two Clovers lose for the first time, which was unexpected, but also Cloverdale gave up the heavy-weight class because of illness. Duane Hubbard still has a 5-1 record because he could not participate in the meet. »8-Todd Wilkins, A. by forfeit 105-Greg Freige, A, 1-0 decision over Keith Johnson, C. 112-Brian Haltom, ('. 7-2 decision over Scott Cannotsey, A. 119-John Niehus, A, first period pin over Kevin Gaddis, C. 126-John Groover, A, 12-0 superior decision over Dan Oates, C. 132--Mike Gaskins. didn’t quite see it that way. “Their defense did not do that much to us,” Boling said of the 90 per cent turnover rate the Cougar possession charts showed in the first half. “It was our own mental errors. They didn’t force that many turnovers as far as traveling and double dribble, but we forced a lot of bad passes, which is not the result of good defense, but lack of our intensity on offense.” SOUTH ENTERED the second period with a 7-2 lead, North’s only points of the quarter coming on a Kerry Kurtz drive with a minute left in the quarter. Rich Schrock got the Eagles started with four first period points, and Adam Hull came off the bench to start his team leading 14-point night in the second period with four points. By halftime the Eagles held a 19-6 lead. “We played good defense,” coach Puckett insisted, “but the reason we jumped out to such a lead was they weren’t hitting the basket. If North Putnam would have played the first half the way they did the second, it would have been a heck of a ball game, like we had last year.” North’s fullcourt pressure came up with two South turnovers to open the second half, along with controlling the tip.

Greencastle swimmers defeat North
BAINBRIDGE - Kenny Boruff set another North Putnam High School swimming record Monday night, but again the Cougars lost. Greencastle took seven out of the 11 possible firsts, as Mark Marley and Todd Gray each won two events and the Tiger Sharks defeated the Cougars 8643. MARLEY WON THE 50 yard and 100-yard freestyles for Greencastle won the
However, the Cougars did not score on any of the possessions and South took a 25-6 lead a minute into the second half. SOUTH LED 35-17 when the final quarter opened and it was in the last period the Cougars started running the proper patterns. With about IM> minutes left North had the margin down to eight points, 40-32, but two Schrock free throws, Hull’s seventh field goal of the night and Bob Hendrich’s free throw secured the win. North did own a 21-16 rebounding advantage, led by Gene Ensor and Bill Horton with four each. Brian Christy and Mike McHugh led South with six rebounds each. Eagles and Clovers play in championship contest
By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor For the first time in the fouryear history of the Putnam County Girls Basketball Tournament Greencastle and South Putnam won’t be playing for the title. Defending tournament champion South Putnam will be there, advancing Wednesday night by 64-24 rout of North Putnam at South Putnam High School. HOWEVER, two-time champion Greencastle was eliminated from the field by Cloverdale 45-34 at Cloverdale High School. For the first time in five years Cloverdale defeated Greencastle as Laura Roach scored 19 points and pulled down T 7 rebounds. Roach’s figures are pretty well supported as statistics from both team’s charts were nearly the same. “I thought we were up and down the first half,” coach Greg Hammond said of his Clovers. “We got a little more consistency in the second half and stretched it out.” Cloverdale jumped out to an 11-7 first quarter lead, trailing the Cubs only twice, 2-0 and 4-2 before taking the lead for good at 6-4. BY HALFTIME the Clovers led 22-15 and built the lead to 10, 32-22, by the end of the third quarter. Cloverdale's advantage hit 15 points in the final period, but coach Hammond didn’t feel comfortable about pulling his starters and resting them for the title game. “We would get a little 12, 14point lead and would want to let up and they would come back on us. They didn’t let up,” Hammond said of the relentless Cubs. “We just absolutely weren’t hitting, so I don’t think they had to be in a pressure situation. We were in a pressure situation having to come from behind,” coach Kathy Kissinger said of the Cub’s play. HAMMOND ADMITTED the Clovers had a little incentive to beat Greencastle. “We came so close to them twice last year, so

for this group of girls it was a motivational thing. It was just something they weren’t going to let get away from them again this year,” Hammond said. Behind Roach’s 19 points was Bev Riley with 13, as the only other Clover in double figures. Sandy Fox led Greencastle with eight points, as no Cub reached double figures. SOUTH SHUT North out in the opening quarter of play at South Putnam High School and the rout was on before the second half started. The now 8-2 Eagles entered the second period with a 14-0 lead before Sandra Farrow scored the first North points 30 seconds after the Cougars controlled the tip. The tip was about the only thing North did control. South led 29-8 at halftime as North committed 23 first half tur-

Coach Audrey Satterblom pulled her starters before the end of the third period and with South leading 45-19 as the last quarter opened rested them through the final eight minutes of play. Kim Zeronik led South’s scoring with 11 points, though she did not play the last 12 minutes of the contest.
