Hints from Heloise Wiping shelf with soapy water aids in installing lining
DEAR HELOISE: I’d like to use some of that pretty, self-sticking plastic shelf paper but, for the life of me, I never can get the stuff on straight. Each time I put it on, no matter how careful I am, I end up with wrinkles and bubbles. Is there something I can use to prevent this? G. Phillips ★ * ★ Frustrating, huh? Well, I’ve found that if you will wipe the shelf with soapy water before applying the sticky plastic, you can arrange it to perfection without it sticking all over the place. Once you’ve got it exactly where you want it, just leave it be and, when it dries, it will adhere securely. What could be simpler! Hope you find it to be that too. Hugs, Heloise

DIAPER LINERS Dear Heloise: I like using diaper liners but they can get to be expensive. I started out, when my daughter was born, cutting them in half. As she grew, I went to using them whole. After pitching out many liners that were just wet, I read the label and found out they were made of rayon. So, into the washer they went. I’ve been able to use them several times before disposing. They do shrink in size a tad and wrinkle some but they still do a good job of keeping baby drier. Of course, I still throw out the soiled ones. Lori F. P, B, & J Dear Heloise : When making peanut butter and jelly sand-
wiches for lunchboxes, I’d find half-eaten soggy sandwiches came home. So I tried spreading a thin coat of peanut butter on each slice of bread and jelly in between. No more soggy bread! Margie Allen SEWING ON BUTTONS Dear Heloise: After sewing on a button, tie the knot under the button i between the button and the garment) to eliminate knots and thread ends on the inside of the garment. Before knotting, you could wrap the excess thread around the button a few times to make a shank. The button will be much easier to button and unbutton. Marlene Odle-Kemp PRETTY POTS Dear Heloise: Don’t discard those old stretch socks. Use

them to make your flower pots more attractive. Just cut off the foot portion and slip the top part over the pot. If this covering gets soiled, it can easily be washed. Of course this will only work on smaller pots. Mrs. D.M. Anderson CHRISTMAS GIFTS Dear Heloise: On Christmas eve, we tie a different colored ribbon on the wrist of each of our five children. Comes morning and they immediately know which packages belong to them because they have a corresponding colored ribbon on each of their packages. J.J. CLEAN BLENDER Dear Heloise: To effectively wash a blender, put a very small amount of liquid detergent, or whatever you use, in a small amount of water in the blender. Turn it on and watch it clean
itself. Then just swab down the sides and rinse clean. Fran Kemp DEAR HELOISE: For a special occasion, parties, etc., “Pass the Package” is unbeatable to entertain the children. Take something small that children like a tiny plastic toy, a package of gum, etc. and wrap it eight to 10 times, each time in a different color or design of wrapping (you can even alternate black and white newspaper with the colored comic section). It’s a good way to recycle paper. Have the children sit in a circle. Someone can play the piano or use a record player. While the music is playing, the children pass the package around the circle. When the music stops, the child holding the gift gets to remove one layer of paper.

wnen tbe music starts again, the package goes around again. This continues until the final layer of paper is opened. The child who removes the final layer gets to keep the prize. Helen Bullen HINTS FROM HIM Dear Heloise: This may be of interest to people who like poached eggs but don’t have a steam poacher. Cut both ends out of small tuna or salmon cans. Put them in a shallow pan or skillet with about one inch of water. Bring water to a boil. Break an egg into each can, then spoon some of the water outside the can on top of the eggBy timing it a few times you can tell just how long it takes to cook the eggs. If more than one person is to be served different hardnesses of eggs, just delay breaking one of the eggs to be able to bring them out at the same time. The eggs can easily be lifted out with a spatula after the cans have been removed. Ken Recker ★ ★ * Stumped by a housekeeping problem? Could be you’ll find out how to solve your dilemma by reading, “Help! from Heloise,” a new problemsolution book published by Arbor House that’s available at your local bookshop or library.
