'Hurry, Christmas, hurry fast'still Chipmunk request

Two decades ago, a talented man named Ross Bagdasarian created three lovable cartoon chipmunks named Alvin, Simon and Theodore. Although only 26 half-hour editions of “The Alvin Show” were produced for TV, the characters have remained favorites with old and young alike. Bagdasarian died in 1972, but his son is bringing the trio back in the new NBC special “A Chipmunk Christmas,” airing Monday, Dec. 14. Ross Bagdasarian Jr. credits the trio’s popularity to their own special traits. “Each of them has a distinct personality,” he says. “Alvin is the mischief-maker, always getting himself and the others into trouble. He’s the selfappointed leader of the three. Simon is the very studious and logical one, and Theodore is the giggling little eater who is just one cookie away from happiness.” Bagdasarian provides the voice of the Chipmunks’ manager, David Seville, in the special. “When I was growing up with the Chipmunks, so to speak,” he remembers, “I wasn’t that interested in them. My dad and I had an understanding that he wouldn’t have to play catch with me if I didn’t nave to listen to his Chipmunk songs. After he passed away, I became acquainted with them by playing the records and watching the shows.” Two of those records, “Alvin’s Harmonica” and “The Chipmunk Song,” were huge hits in the early ’6os. Many producers told Bagdasarian that Alvin and company were past history with no chance for current success. However, sheer coincidence proved them wrong. Two years ago, just for fun, a radio station played a popular punk rock song at a fast speed and

THE CHIPMUNKS: Alvin (top), Theodore (bottom) and Simon. dubbed the tune “Chipmunk Punk.” The listener response was so overwhelming that a record company contacted Bagdasarian and asked him and his wife Janice Karman who also supplies some of the voices to record an album. The result was a best-seller, followed by “Urban Chipmunk,” a spoof of western and country songs on the “Urban Cowboy” movie soundtrack. More TV specials are being planned, and in 1983, the Chipmunks will celebrate their 25th anniversary. Bagdasarian has big plans for the event: “We’ll do another album, and we’ll probably include an old song ‘Alvin for President’ on it. After all, he’s always been a little ahead of himself.”
