Dear Abby Grandparents 'right to know' about son's baby questioned
DEAR ABBY: A 23-year-old unwed mother, signed “Raising a Child Alone,” asked you to ask your readers, “Wouldn’t the parents of the baby’s father want to know that they had a grandchild, even though their son refused to assume any responsibility for it?” I cast my vote in favor of informing the paternal grandparents. Perhaps they are people of moral excellence who would react in a positive way, offering love to a fatherless child who will need every bit of love and concern he can get. It is unfair to ignore an innocent child because of the circumstances of his birth. A child is a person not an embarrassment to be hidden away. I would want to be told. LOVES CHILDREN DEAR LOVES: Yours is indeed a compassionate and generous attitude. But my mail from grandparents has been running 2-to-l against “wanting to know.” Read on for an opposing point of view: DEAR ABBY: As the grandfather of eight legitimate grandchildren, I would not want to be informed that I was the paternal grandfather of an illegitimate child! If my daughter had a baby, I would know for sure that it was my grandchild, but the child of my son's latest conquest could be anybody’s baby. Sign me. EIGHT IS ENOUGH ♦ * * DEAR ABBY: Our only grandchild is nearly 5 years old and he still believes in Santa Claus. His grandfather and I
Hints from Heloise Identifying hand-me-downs is matter of 1-2-3
DEAR HELOISE: You recently touched on the problem of marking children’s clothing for quick and easy identification as it is passed from one child to another down the age-size line. You invited readers to write in with their solutions to this dilemma. It wasn’t until my daughter mentioned she is using the system with her three boys, that I had used for my children, that I thought others might like to try it. Using a permanent marking pen, mark items for the first child number one with a “1.” As it is handed down to child number two, add another line to show “11.” For child number three, add yet another line to show “111.” If, after that much wear, there is still some life left in the garment for another child’s use, it’s easy enough to

add a fourth line, and even a slash for a fifth. If child number two receives a piece of brand new clothing which could be confused with other’s clothing, start the new item off on its rounds with a marking of “11” for fast identification. Mrs. Frank Kasper * * * Smart! A real time-saver for Mom or whoever is sorting and folding clothes after laundering. Without marking it sure would be difficult to remember who has outgrown what. Thanks for a nifty tip. Heloise ADD TUCK-IN Dear Heloise: My husband had a favorite pullover-knit shirt that had becomeu&oo short to tuck into his jeans. He asked me if there was anything I could do to lengthen it.
have bought him some wonderful Christmas presents and we want the boy to know that they came from us, but his mother insists that he be told that all the gifts he finds under the tree on Christmas morning are from “Santa.” I don’t think this is fair to us. What should we do? Our daughter-in-law doesn’t accept criticism very well. GRANDMA DEAR GRANDMA: Take the Christmas gifts to your grandchild and present them in person. * * * DEAR ABBY: I can’t remember if it’s you or your sister (I get both papers), but it doesn’t matter because’ you are both equally guilty of this offense and I doubt that you will print this anyway. The point isn’t whether you cop a day off by running some golden oldies, but rather the annoying way in which you do it. Example: “A reader from Schleppville has requested a rerun of that marvelous letter I ran last year, signed ‘Tired of Living,’ so here it is.” Abby, everyone takes vacations and days off. What they don’t do is take a lot of bows while doing so. Just because readers pay their money for a newspaper doesn’t mean they’re not going to be cheated once in a while, but please don’t insult us by pretending that you are accommodating one of your millions of daily readers by rerunning his favorite letter. If you decide to become honest about this, just ask that reader to enclose a self-addressed envelope and send him a copy of his favorite column, and please spare the rest of us the boredom of rerun city! D. FROM BIG D
I thought a moment, looked in his drawer and found an old undershirt, cut off about eight inches or so at the bottom and machine stitched it to the hem of the pullover shirt. Perfect! He was really pleased! The lengthened shirt now fits comfortably and the new addition doesn’t even show. C.P. ORNAMENT HANGERS Dear Heloise: I’m 10 years old and we have a Christmas tree at school in our classroom. While we were decorating it with ornaments, we suddenly ran out of hangers before we ran out of decorations. My teacher got some paper clips, bent them into the shape of a hook and we were able to hang the rest of the decorations. Diane Chavez ★ * * Aren’t teachers wonderful! And pretty smart, too, huh? 1 — Heloise

CHILD’S OVEN Dear Heloise: With Christmas close at hand, there are children who will receive those little ovens that bake cakes. This tip may come in handy. I’ve found an alternative to paying a lot of money for the cake mixes which are especially made for these little ovens. I just buy a snack cake mix, one that calls for just water to mix. By measuring out onethird cup cake mix and putting it into plastic bags, I end up with approximately six little cake mixes. All the child has to do then is add two tablespoons of water to the one-third cup mix, stir and pour the batter into the small pan that comes with the oven. A pre-mixed frosting can be kept in the refrigerator to top it off. Judy Perry GARLIC AROMA Dear Heloise: After prepar-

DEAR D.: Sorry the reruns bore you. I’m told those “golden oldies” are appreciated by many. Readers? ★ * * DEAR ABBY: Our 19-year-old son got into trouble with the law drinking and stealing. He served some time, but I think the judge let him off easy, considering he cussed out a cop and broke probation, and now he’s back again. Serves him right. Let him pay for running his smart mouth. Every day he calls up his daddy and puts in his order. It’s always two cartons of cigarettes a week. Yesterday he asked for fang breakfast drink, a big bag of chocolate-chip cooKies, a quart of milk, 2 Big Macs and a large order of fries. Today he asked for a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken, a bag of Doritos, some beef jerky and some more cookies. His daddy takes him whatever he asks for and I keep on fighting him about it. All I’d buy the boy is cigarettes. I say, “He put himself in jail let him live on what they feed him there.” Am I wrong to feel the way I do, Abby? Please send me your advice. FED-UP MAMA DEAR FED-UP: I’m on your side. It’s a big mistake to pamper him in prison. Most folks don’t have it that good on the outside. Everybody needs friends. wasting money when I throw them away. Valerie Sorenson TOYSTORAGE Dear Heloise: I’ve found one way to neatly store toys for my two little daughters in a sturdy, 39-gallon size plastic garbage can. It is large enough to hold lots of toys and Ls durable enough to withstand tipping over. Sometimes the girls use it for a small “cave.” I have two garbage cans filled with toys, one in the attic, one in their room. I alternate them once a month. When I do, the girls think they have new toys. Gail Richardson. * * ★ Send your favorite household hint to Heloise, P.O. Box 32000, San Antonio, Tx. 78216.
