People in the news King awaits first serve in court LOS ANGELES (AP) Billie Jean King bit her fingernails and stared as the woman who once was her lover testified that the tennis star promised to give her the Malibu beach house where the two women used to watch the sunset. , Marilyn Barnett said softly in a hushed courtroom Wednesday that she abandoned her job as a Beverly Hills hairdresser to become Mrs. King's private secretary and lover, and she said Mrs. King in return promised to support her always. "I gave up my occupation, my pride, my career, my identity," she said at the opening of the trial of a lawsuit filed by Mrs. King and her husband, Larry, who are trying to evict Ms. Barnett from a beach house they own. Ms. Barnett. 33, has lived at the house since 1974. Although eviction is the only issue being heard before Superior Court Judge Julius Title, the judge has said he believes a decision in the case will resolve a “palimony” lawsuit filed by Ms. Barnett last April. After that lawsuit was made public, Mrs. King acknowledged having an affair with Ms. Barnett, but said she had never promised her any money or property. Ms. Barnett, who walks slowly with the aid of a cane because she was partially crippled by a fall, said she was working as a hairdresser in 1972 when Mrs. King was referred to her as a client. Within a year, she said, the tennis star offered her a job. Ms. Barnett said Mrs. King stayed with her at the house whenever she was in town until 1978 "when we broke up.” • WASHINGTON (AP) A year and a month after the 1980 presidential election, a Washington office is still identified in neat white block letters as "The National Unity Campaign for John Anderson.” And inside, tacked up next to a picture of the former candidate is a red and white bumper sticker that reads, “Don’t Blame Me, I Voted for Anderson.” A relaxed John Anderson is looking ahead to 1984 and thinking about running again for the presidency. But even as he talks about continued fragmentation of the two-party system and the possibility of a third-party run at the White House, Anderson, now 59, declares firmly that he will not become a perennial presidential candidate no one takes seriously. “I don’t want to become another Gene McCarthy,” he said. “I think that is a fate to be avoided. We do not want to become the symbol the of the querulous quest. “I have no inner compulsion to run. There is no preordained necessity for me to spend my life on the altar of the public campaign.” Since last January, Anderson has starred on the speechmaking circuit, pulling in $2,000 or more per appearance before college audiences and business organizations. • Roger G. Hall, vice president of Philadelphia’s TV Channel 12, has been using computerized mailing lists to address fund-raising appeals for the public television station. One such letter, addressed to “Mr. Leif Ericson” in Media, Pa., drew the following reply: “This may come as a shock to you, but the discoverer of North America passed away quietly on Thursday, July 18, 1042 A.D. “We would like to pass your message on to him, but although his whereabouts are suspected, they cannot be confirmed. “In his own way, he would probably have made a sizeable contribution (or have made sure that someone else did) to your cause. “The fact that the contribution would be tax-deductible would probably not have been a significant factor. Vikings were the first to invent tax shelters, but the shelters consisted mainly of areas where they would hide taxes collected in England, Ireland, Italy, etc.” The letter was signed by Ivar Christensen, the president of the Leif Ericson Society, an organization devoted to gaining recognition for Ericson as the first European to see the New World.

JOE GARAGIOLA: And friend

CLEVELAND (AP) Sportscaster Joe Garagiola, who had kind words for Cleveland during the strike-delayed baseball All-Star game in August, was handed the key to the city that is so often maligned in jokes. Mayor George Voinovich said during the ceremony Wednesday that Garagiola was a “guy with a great heart.” Voinovich said the former St. Louis Cardinal catcher made “gracious remarks about the spirit, vitality and essence of Cleveland.” “Cleveland jokes are like bald jokes. I’m sick and tired of them,” the smooth-domed Garagiola, 50, told a luncheon of about 400 people sponsored by the city’s convention and visitors bureau. He was the second sports announcer to get the key this year. ABC’s Howard Cosell was honored last summer for enthusiatic words about the city during a Cleveland Browns football game last year. The first annual International Pig Trade Show, under way this week in Atlanta, will feature the national champion hog caller, a parking lot barbecue of 3,000 whole pigs and a Miss Piggy look-alike contest. But there’s a catch to that last event. Hog farmers will be able to meet the Miss Piggy look-alike all right, but she’s a girl, not a pig. Talk about your dubious distinctions. So far, however, there has been no word of a possible Kermit the Frog look-alike contest. • Paul Newman, at Brooklyn College Wednesday to help dedicate its new film department, was critical of the news coverage of his new movie, “Absence of Malice.” But in a question-and-answer session with 2,500 students, he expressed equal dismay with the publicity for the movie, which deals with reckless newspaper reporting. When a student complained that a radio commercial for the movie ended with a gunshot, giving a false impression of the film’s nonviolent ending, Newman said he had been unaware of the commercial, but did not approve. “If you hear it again and there’s a second shot,” he said, “it will be me shooting the publicity man.” • MIAMI (AP) Vincent Bugliosi, the chief prosecutor of mass murderer Charles Manson, says convicted murderers shouldn’t be released simply because they give the appearance of being rehabilitated. Bugliosi, who was in Miami Wednesday promoting his new book “Shadow of Cain,” said he believes there is a trend toward freeing those convicted of horrible crimes because parole officials are more preoccupied with rehabilitation. Bugliosi said there are no guarantees that murderers like Manson and Sirhan Sirhan, the convicted killer of Robert F. Kennedy who is scheduled for parole in 1984, will not be freed if they prove themselves “rehabilitated.”

Instant replay '6O Minutes/ 'Dallas' one-two Nielsen punch for CBS

NEW YORK (AP) - CBS won the networks’ ratings race for the second straight week, thanks mostly to a one-two finish by “60 Minutes” and “Dallas” and six other shows, including the new “Falcon Crest,” in the Top 10, figures from the A.C. Nielsen Co. showed. ABC’s “NFL Monday Night Football” game between Philadelphia and Miami placed third in the week ending Dec. 6, an extraordinarily high finish for the normally popular sports program. And there was a promising sign for struggling NBC the network’s new “Bret Maverick,” starring James Garner, finished seventh for the week. It was the second consecutive No. 1 finish for “60 Minutes,” and the newsmagazine, primetime champion for the 1979-80

B.J. and the Grand Ole Opry

By JOE EDWARDS Associated Press Writer NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The raindrops that kept falling on singer B.J. Thomas have given way to a rejuvenated career and a spot as a regular performer on the Grand Ole Opry. Thomas, whose search for esteem plunged him into a $3,000-a-week drug habit, fulfilled a longtime dream when he became the 60th member of the 56-year-old country music show. “Joining the Opry is a dream-come-true,” said Thomas, probably best known for his hit “Raindrops Keep Failin’ on My Head.” “The Opry was my boyhood inspiration. TV year, seems to be mounting a challenge to “Dallas,” last year’s winner and the top-rated show five times in the first seven weeks of the current season. “Dallas” still leads “60 Minutes” for the season to date, though by a slim margin. For CBS, it was the second straight first-place finish in the weekly competition, after swapping the lead twice in four weeks with ABC. CBS now has been at the top five times in the nine weeks since the TV year began Oct. 5, ABC four. CBS’ average rating in the latest period surveyed was 18.7 to 17.7 for ABC and 17 for NBC. The networks say that means in an average prime-time minute, 18.7 percent of the country’s TVequipped homes were tuned to CBS. The rating for “60 Minutes”

something I’ve always wanted to do.” Thomas, 39, remembered that records by Ernest Tubb and Hank Williams were among the first he heard, and recalled visiting the Opry in 1952. “They’ve been inspirations to me,” said Thomas, whose singing has bordered on the country style. Now, Thomas is a regular performer on the Opry with Tubb and other Country Music Hall-of-Famers like Minnie Pearl, Roy Acuff, Hank Snow, Bill Monroe and Grandpa Jones. Just seven years ago, Thomas probably never would have been considered for a spot on the Opry. He was spending

was 28.9. Nielsen says that means of all the nation’s homes with television, 28.9 percent saw at least part of the show. CBS scored with the debut of “Falcon Crest ” No. 8 for the week, though the show certainly benefitted from its lead-in, “Dallas.” “Hill Street Blues,” NBC’s award-winning police series, continued to climb in the ratings to 16th place, its highest ever. Ten of the week’s 11 lowestrated programs were new shows or specials, beginning with CBS’ “Simon and Simon” in 60th place, followed by “McClain’s Law” and “Doug Henning's World of Magic,” both on NBC, two ABC shows, “Making a Living” and “Open All Night,” CBS’ “Shannon,” “Television Inside and Out” on NBC, ABC’s “Strike Force,” “NBC Magazine,’’

And the Opry prides itself on the good behavior of its performers, having kicked the legendary Williams off the show at the height of his career some 30 years ago for drinking. “I was looking for something,” Thomas said in reflecting on his trouble with drugs. “I had low self-esteem. I had not had a good relationship with my dad. I was searching. ’ ’ He said he used drugs for 18 years, and was addicted for 10. “I used a horrendous amount,” recalled Thomas, who said that as a child he was abused by an alcoholic father. Six years ago, he became a born-again Christian, quit

drugs cold turkey and, with counseling, put his life back on the right track. The threatening clouds hanging over his life disappeared. “I had thought patterns from my childhood that had nothing to do with reality,” he said. “Even after I became a Christian, I had to investigate who I was. Today, I try to keep close touch with who I really am.” After becoming a Christian, he began recording gospel music and won four Grammy awards the music industry equivalent of an Oscar. Now he’s concentrating on pop music with a country flavor and said he’s just recorded some of the best material of his career.
