Bv WILLIAM R. BARN ARD AP Sports Writer Take the Atlanta Hawks’ first quarter and the Portland Trail Blazers’ second quarter, please. On their home courts, those two teams went through cold spells they would rather forget en route to National Basketball Association defeats Tuesday night. The Hawks hit only 18 percent of their shots in the first period, and were outscored 28-9, before losing 98 88 to the New Jersey Nets. Portland did all right in the first period against Golden State, taking a 32-26 lead. But in the first 6‘l> minutes of the second quarter, the Trail

RONNIE LESTER: Lays In winner

Lester swipes OT win from Pacers

CHICAGO (AP) - If his opponents want to drop back to pressure the scoring threats of his Chicago Bulls teammates, Ronnie Lester says he will prove that he belongs in the National Basketball Association. Lester, who hit a career-high 19 points Tuesday night, provided the winning points in the Bulls’ 118-116 overtime victory over Indiana. “If the other teams want to back oft on players like (Artis) Gilmore and (Reggie) Theus and let me shoot, I think 1 can show them that I belong in the NBA. “This was by far my best game as a pro. I felt confident tonight. In fact, more confident than I have because I guess I had more opportunities.” Lester said. One of his opportunities came with 25 seconds left to play in the overtime period. Lester swiped a pass, scored on a layup and added a free throw to give the Bulls a four-point advantage. The margin was cut to two on a basket by John Davis, who led all scorers with 28 points, and the Pacers got another chance to score with 21 seconds remaining in the extra period when Chicago’s Dwight Jones failed to get the ball inbounds within five seconds But Tom Owens misfired on a 20-footer at the buzzer and the Bulls had their eighth victory against 12 losses. Indiana, 9-10, saw their three-game w in skein snapped. Jones said he was counting the players instead of the seconds. "1 guess I could have been the goat when 1 failed to inbound the ball. I started to count the players on the floor to make

sure we had everybody and while I thought I should call time out the referee signaled it was Indiana's ball,” Jones said. Chicago Coach Jerry Sloan was pleased with the victory but displeased with the team’s play. “Despite our win, we left a lot to be desired. Tonight in the first quarter, I was really furious. I called the same play three times and it was like they didn’t know where they were. •, “I realize that Lester has been playing hurt and I am glad that he felt he had such a good, game. But I expect a top performance from him every night and I will not settle for anything less,” Sloan said. Lester is in his second year after signing a three-year contract with the Bulls, He missed much of last season with knee injuries. Regulation play ended after Chicago’s Reggie Theus, who scored 26 points, made a long jump shot to tie the contest at 107-107. Lester had given the Bulls a 103-98 lead with 2:15 remaining in regulation, but the Pacers moved into a 107-105 advantage with 43 seconds left. Lester sent the Bulls into a 109-107 lead early in the overtime, but Davis countered for the Pacers to tie the score again. David Greenwood of the Bulls, who scored a season-high of 21 points, put the Bulls ahead to stay with a tip-in off a shot by Lester.
