Stearman could join elite ranks with 500th win
By STEVE HERMAN AP Sports Writer Columbus North’s Bill Stearman is on the verge of his 500th eareer victory, a plateau only six other men have reached in the history of Indiana high school basketball. The veteran Columbus coach notched N 0.499 last Friday night in a 48-47 victory over Shelbyville, and he can get N 0.500 on Saturday at Scottsburg. The record is 734 victories by former Lafayette Jeff Coach Marion Crawley. The earliest Sharpe could reach N 0.700 would be on Jan. 15 at West Vigo, assuming North remains unbeaten in the meantime. Third among active coaches and ninth overall is Peru’s Bob Macy w’ith 490 victories. The Tigers have lost their first three games this season, however, so the earliest Macy could get N 0.500 would be on Jan. 29 against Kokomo Haworth. Anderson Highland was unbeaten and ranked No.l in 197980, but Coach Butch Stafford calls last weekend’s victories over then-No.l Anderson and then-N0.2 South Bend LaSalle in the Hall of Fame Classic “the biggest day in Highland basketball history.” The two victories, paced by the 65 points of guard George Allen, lifted Highland to 5-1 for the season the only loss was in triple-overtime to N 0.5 Madison Heights and pushed the Scots up nine places to the N 0.4 ranking this week. Highland plays at Muncie North on Friday. “This is the best victory I’ve ever had as a coach,” Stafford

said after the 66-60 triumph over Anderson’s Indians for the tourney championship. “This is even better than the state championship I had in Alabama. When do you ever beat the No.l and N 0.2 teams in the state in the same day? We finally proved we’re as good as anybody. Highland’s basketball hasn’t gotten the recognition it deserves. Now we’ll get that,” the 32-year-old second-year Highland coach said. “I didn’t think there was any way we could win this tournament with our injury situation, but the players proved me wrong. There’s no way anybody could call it a fluke. I don’t think there is any question we re the No.l team in

Indiana,” Stafford added. He might get some argument on that last point, especially from Marion’s Giants, who moved up to No.l in The Associated Press poll this week after the losses by Anderson and LaSalle. Marion has a busy schedule this week with three games in a four-day stretch. The 3-0 Giants play at Anderson tonight and at Kokomo Friday night, then return home to meet Huntington on Saturday. “This definitely will stimulate Marion’s Giants,” Coach Bill Green said of the No.l ranking. “This is what we shoot for in the regular season.” But he said the contest with

Anderson “is a big rivalry no matter who’s ranked No.l. Now that it’s reversed, this might put a couple logs on their fire to get it back. Certainly, we’ll find out by the end of this week whether we deserve it. ” Anderson, which dropped to eighth in this week’s poll, could have another tough game on Friday at No. 14 Lafayette Jeff. Next week’s poll could also have some significant changes should Anderson beat Marion and Jeff. Another crucial contest for both teams involves N 0.2 Indianapolis Cathedral at Madison Heights on Saturday Cathedral is 5-0 lor the season, while Madison Heights takes a 4-0 record into Friday
night’s game against Kokomo Haworth. LaSalle, which fell to sixth in this week’s poll, will be challenged by 4-0 South Bend Clay on Friday. Among other games of note this weekend, N 0.9 New Albany takes on No. 16 Floyd Central in a battle of unbeatens on Friday; and unbeaten Argos, now with a state record 74-game regular season winning string, plays Jimtown Friday and OregonDavis Saturday. Five players in major league history have won batting championships while playing for two different clubs. Thev were Ernie Lombardi, Napoleon Lajoie, Rogers Hornsby, Lefty O’Doul and Jimmy Foxx.
