Worry Clinic

By George W. Crane, Ph.D..M.D.

CASE A-702: Lucy 8., age 18, is a high school senior. “Dr. Crane,” she asked, “why did you decide to become a teacher, - for teachers don’t get wealthy, do they? “Besides, many of their pupils goof off and don’t cooperate. “Yet many college students still pick teaching as their life work. Why?” CANDLE IN DARKNESS “It’s better to light a candle than curse the darkness,” is an adage that buoys up the morale of good teachers. A splendid teacher automatically tries to banish ignorance, much as a fastidious housewife can’t stand a speck of dirt. As a psychology teacher at Northwestern, I abhorred the great ignorance about marriage and child rearing that was causing such a high divorce rate and zooming juvenile delinquency. So I exchanged daytime classes on the Evanston campus in order to teach at night on our downtown Chicago campus, thereby freeing myself for a chance to gain my M.D. degree. Mrs. Crane and I were then married, with two little boys of pre-school age, but she always backed me up 100%. And I thus gained an M.D. to reinforce my Ph.D., as authority for writing this “Worry Clinic”.

A few days after her death on last Oct. 29th, I received this letter from a woman reader, which is the type of reward teachers hope for: “You don’t know me, Dr. Crane,” she said, “but our family grieves with you at the loss of Mrs. Crane. “You will never know how much influence you and she have had on my life, for I grew up in a home where we had a negative viewpoint. “It amazed me to read and see the positive, helpful outlook of yourself and children, too, for I have been a patient of one of your sons. “Your wife must have been a Godly woman, a very supportive wife to you in your work, and certainly a devoted mother. . “I’m thankful for all you have written about her and your children during the past years. She was the type of woman I desire so much to be! “Just from knowing you and your family through your newspaper column has changed my entire life, so I thank you and grieve for your loss of such a wonderful wife.” Teachers don’t receive many compliments from pupils but even one like this offsets a teacher’s lack of financial wealth or movie fame! (Always write to Or. Crane, Hopkins Bldg., Mellott, Indiana 47958, enclosing a long stamped, addressed envelope and 25 1 to cover typing and printing costs when you send for one of his booklets.)
