People in the news Fran Tarkenton still scrambling NEW YORK Fran Tarkenton would play in it every year, if he weren’t playing in the one for entrepreneurs. The 41-year-old former National Football League quarterback is a dynamo, a dynamo who has been frequently quoted as saying, “I am a businessman.” He's also a former adman, having worked off-season at Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn as an account man on a piece of business from the state of Georgia and at McCannErickson on Coca-Cola. So, given that contact with possible infection, it is no surprise that he came down with the old inventing-an-advertising-medium syndrome. He said the other day that the airline ticket folders with advertising would be his sixth business, and, as in the past, he has a partner, insisting: “I'm no figurehead. I’m intimately involved. I belly up with my money and I belly up with my effort.” One of his businesses is a consultancy on productivity. "More than any athlete of his time,” William N. Wallace wrote in The New York Times in 1976, “Fran Tarkenton has successfully mixed sports and business.” Right on. The name that he keeps before the public with his regular appearances on the ABC-TV Network gets him past executive doors with ease, and his l’il-ol’-Georgia-boy sales charm, first honed working for a Minnesota trucking company in the chill winter of 1962, appears to be dynamite when turned on. His new business inspiration came to him during one of his frequent commercial plane flights vertising in airline ticket folders, requiring an insert of six pages. That was last spring. He sold 11 airline presidents on the idea in 10 days, he said, and then during July wrote contracts with 12 advertisers without even a dummy. Usually he called the top guy at the advertiser company, saying: “This is Fran Tarkenton. I have an exciting new medium I’d like to take 10 minutes to talk to you about.” Although Tarkenton figures that the carriers he has contracted with distribute 14 million folders a month, he said he was beginning in January with only nine million and would build to as many as 16 million in July. During his New York selling summer he sold $7 million worth of advertising and. he noted proudly, “I only bought one lunch.” • LONDON (AP)~ Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono plan to sue for higher royalties from the company that owns the rights to Beatles’ songs McCartney wrote with Miss Ono's late husband, John Lennon. Tony Brainsby, a spokesman for McCartney, said it has not been decided whether to proceed in U.S. or British courts against Lord Lew Grade’s ATV Music Corp. The statement issued by Brainsby on behalf of McCartney and Miss Ono did not specify a sum for the royalties they are claiming. The statment was issued in response to newspaper reports in Britain that McCartney and his partner’s widow are fighting each other to buy Northern Songs Co., the subsidiary of ATV Music that owns the copyrights to all Beatles songs. He said the two met recently in the United States, were in constant communication and were “furious" about the reports that they were at odds. Brainsby said the suit would “relate to royalties on past Beatles sales. It has nothing to do with Paul McCartney and Lord Grade over negotiations to buy Northern Songs and ATV Music.” • TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) Signs warning boaters to slow down will be put up in manatee areas of Florida’s waterways, courtesy of country singer Jimmy Buffet, who gave Florida $35,000 for just that purpose. What is a manatee area, you might ask? It is an area populated by manatees, the large docile water creatures sometimes called sea cows. Buffet, a Floridian who has taken an interest in the endangered animals, presented a check to Natural Resources Director Elton Gissendanner in ceremonies Thursday. The money, which will pay for 365 signs, came from proceeds of two of Buffet’s recent concerts. Gov. Bob Graham, a fan of Buffet’s music, asked the singer earlier this year to help lead the state’s effort to protect the animals, which are sometimes injured or killed by boats in bays and rivers.

BARRY GIBB:As Don Juan?
LONDON (AP) “Staying Alive” to the iambic pentameter of Lord Byron’s “Don Juan,” but Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees is ready to make the leap. Gibb, at 35 the oldest member of the pop-music group, is to make his acting debut as Lord Byron in a new movie, producers Mikola and Elizabeth Shevcheck announced Thursday. They said Gibb had already been signed for the film about the life and loves of the 19th-century English poet, who helped the Greeks in their struggle for independence against the Turkish empire. In a statement issued through the producers, Gibb said he had turned down numerous scripts over the past few years because he was waiting for the right challenge. “Lord Byron was a man who overcame past difficulties and personal problems, and forged boldly ahead,” he said. The producers said they were “very fortunate” to discover the pop star’s dramatic side. Filming is to begin next summer with an expected 1983 release date. No mention was made of Gibb’s salary. • Nancy Reagan has ordered that, starting Friday, the White House be closed through the weekend so that it may be decorated for Christmas. The official unveiling of the decorations, including al9 te-foot Christmas tree and 16 smaller ones, will take place Monday. Mrs. Reagan accepted the trees Wednesday from Eric and Gloria Sundbeck of Bethesda, Md. Their fir had been selected as national champion by the National Christmas Tree Association. The Sundbecks also supplied a championship Christmas tree for the White House in 1979, when Jimmy Carter was president. Sundbeck, who grew the tree in Spartansburg, Pa., said it was planted from a three-year-old seedling 26 years ago. It is taller than those grown commercially, he said, and would retail for about S7OO. Mrs. Reagan, who pronounced it “a lovely big tree,” said it would be covered with “oldfashion decorations.” Christmas planning at the White House also involves addressing 60,000 Christmas cards, paid for by the Republican National Committee, to be mailed Dec. 8 to heads of state, close Reagan friends and political supporters. The Reagans plan to spend Christmas in the White House and New Year’s in Palm Springs, Calif. • NEW YORK (AP) The American Academy of Arts and Letters has two new members former New York Philharmonic musical director Leonard Bernstein, whom the academy called “America’s most renowned musician,” and historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr. Bernstein will occupy the chair last held by composer Samuel Barber, who died last year. Schlesinger will take the chair previously occupied by the late composer Howard Hanson, it was announced Thursday at the organization’s annual meeting. The academy, the upper body of the larger Institute of Arts and Letters, selects 50 members of the institute for special distinction. Schlesinger won the Pulitzer Prize for two books, “The Age of Jackson” and “A Thousand Days: John F. Kennedy in the White House.”
