Vinegar has many variations; paint cans have more than one use
DEARHEIjOISE: I am a firm believer in the use of vinegar. As my mother before me, I too have used nothing but apple cider vinegar. But, with distilled vinegar, wine vinegar, plus apple cider vinegar on the shelves, how is

one to know which to use, and is there really a difference (other than price)? Martha Schultz it it it My favorite subject (next to nylon net)! But, you’re absolutely right. There’s white (clear) vinegar, ambercolored, and even pretty wine vinegars (red). So, what color do you use for what, and what’s the difference? According to a large vinegar producer, there is basically little difference between your vinegars processwise besides color itself. Flavor varies, of course, so in cooking you might want to consider this. Also, determine which you want to use by the effects it might have colorwise. You wouldn’t want to use ambercolored in light foods, but you might want that apple cider flavor in your pickles. For projects where vinegar might leave a trace of color, such as pressing out a hemline
or adding to the laundry, white is best. However, all vinegar is acetic acid, and is made from various ingredients such as alcohol, apples, and wine. Since variation in color is generally due to ingredients used, you’ll find white vinegar has a sharp, pungent taste, while apple cider and wine vinegars are usually more mellow-tasting. But, dear hearts, the most important thing to keep in mind when buying vinegar is to check the acidity content of the vinegar. It’s printed right there on the label. Always buy a high grade with four to six percent acidity. Besides needing this high acidity for pickling foods, you’ll be getting more for your money. Now, whenever I mention vinegar in the column, use the white kind unless I specify otherwise. Hope this clears up any doubts about vinegar like vinegar clears up cloudy glass... Hugs to all! Heloise HINTS FROM HIM Dear Heloise: Don’t throw those empty gallon paint cans away. Set them out in the sun to dry and then they’ll make excellent containers for nails, nuts and bolts, etc., in lieu of the familiar coffee cans found on the typical basementgarage shelf. There’s nothing worse than to drop a can full of nails onto
the floor, which is easily done with a coffee can or glass jar. But with the paint can, you have a convenient handle and inner lip that’s so much easier to hang onto. Terry Quesnel Dear Heloise: To remove visible fat from meats, as many people on a fat-free diet must do, cut it off when the meat is partially frozen. Trying to do it unfrozen is messy and almost impossible. Bobbs MULTI-SIZED PATTERNS Dear Heloise: Many patterns come with three different sizes included particularly children’s patterns. Wanting to save all three sizes for future use, I hesitate cutting off the larger sizes, so here’s what I do. The straight seams can just be folded back, but at the curves around armholes, neck, etc., I clip the tissue at spaced intervals along the seam allowance and fold the seam back to the desired size.

When a large size is needed, just open the pattern out to desired size. Quick and simple with no sizes lost. Beverly Buth ★ ★ Smart gal! How many patterns have I altered because I didn’t think of that! Heloise TIDY TISSUE Dear Heloise: Attach a toilet tissue holder under the kitchen cabinet to hold bathroom tissue. Use this tissue in place of paper towels when possible. It’s cheaper than paper towels and works just as good on little cleanups. Naomi Lloyd FIT AND TRIM Dear Heloise: Perhaps everyone else already knows this but it took me several years to figure it out: My jeans were always too big at the waist. So were some of my children’s slacks and jeans.

The solution is simple and easy. Just put elastic through the back waistband. Cut a slash on the inside of the back waistband on each side. Measure to fit and cut a strip of elastic a little shorter than the length between slits. Run it through the openings, adjust to fit, if necessary, and zigzag or straight stitch it closed, being sure to stitch through the elastic. The stitching shows through the back side, but it can be covered with a belt if you prefer. It’s not as complicated as it may sound and takes only a couple of minutes. It sure beats a gapping waistband or making darts. Betty Jo Benz ★ ★ ★ Send a money-saving idea to Heloise, P.O. Box 32000, San Antonio, Texas 78216. calls, most for help with math problems. Development of the hotline service was assisted by the library and local businesses such as R.J. Reynolds, which supply reference books, telephones and accommodations. “The emphasis is not on providing answers, but on getting students to solve their own problems,” said Marcia Epstein, director.
