Sentencing postponed in Strange trial
DANVILLE (AP)-Sentencing for convicted murdered Dennis Strange was postponed Thursday in Hendricks Circuit Court to allow a hearing Dec. 17 on new evidence the defense said supports Strange’s contention he shot his wife accidentally. Defense attorney John Pierce said he has evidence that authorities found fingerprints on the shotgun that killed Strange’s wife Aug. 28 in their Avon home. IF PRINTS WERE TAKEN from the weapon and they prove to be those of Bobetta Strange, 26, it would support Strange’s testimony that his wife grabbed the barrel of the shotgun and he fired ac-

reality, it was not the bureaucracy that was the real enemy rather it was the attitude of the people who, by their vote, crusaded against it. “The bitter attitude that bureaucrats are no good,” Barr said, “is a serious national liability.” Barr submits, however, that the bureaucracy deserves some of the bad publicity given it if only because its strength lies in what he terms the “iron triangle” - conprised of subcommittee chairmen, bureaucracy and the lobbyist. “IT IS DIFFICULT TO knock through

cidentally, Pierce said. The shooting occurred after an argument in a restaurant, in which Strange, 32, accused his wife of flirting and threatened to kill her. A jury of six men and six women found Strange guilty of murder Nov. 11. PIERCE SAID HE PLANS to ask for dismissal or a new trial after learning from a Hendricks County Jail inmate that fingerprints were obtained from the weapon. Hendricks County Prosecutor David Coleman said Pierce “is contending there were prints taken and that we’re withholding them and that’s just not true.”

the triangle,” Barr believes. “That is why it is so difficult to unravel something in Washington.” When asked how he would unravel the budget problem, Barr said he basically agrees with the tight monetary policy but argued against big tax cuts. Barr sees government grants to education and what her terms “ineffective” energy programs as heavy excess baggage that should be eliminated. “Education,” Barr concludes,” is better left up to state and local governments.”

Coleman said experts testified during the trial that prints could not be taken from the shotgun because the weapon was rusty and had a rough stock. A STATE TROOPER WHO tested the shotgun said during the trial that Mrs. Strange was shot from about five feet away, based on the pattern of the shotgun wound. The defense maintained that her finger deflected the blast and changed the pattern. The tip of one finger was shot off, but prosecution witnesses testified that if the finger had been close enough to the barrel to change the pattern, there would have been discoloration of the skin.
DESPITE THE ADVICE, Barr is optimistic about the economy and the functioning of the government. “The country has a pretty good chance,” believes Barr, “because we are taking a much more realistic viewpoint.” Barr warns, however, that expensive and ineffective programs may be harmful to the country’s fiscal health. “The Vietnam War nearly destroyed the military,” responded Barr, “and some of these programs are nearly destroying the bureaucracy.”
