Hints from Heloise
Beds are kept neat with trim; tea caddy aids in flouring pans
DEAR HELOISE : My children couldn’t get the spreads straight on their beds when making them, yet they had no trouble getting the one on my bed straight. It dawned on me the reason for this was that my spread has seams that line up with the edges of the bed. Their spreads are a big flat seamless piece of fabric. So, I bought four yards of tape for each twin-sized bedspread. (You can choose from various trims such as fringe, cording, lace, bias tape, etc., in many colors.) To shrink it before sewing it on the spread, I washed and dried the trim first. (Be careful when washing bias tape before stitching it to the spread as it gets out of shape. Heloise.) I then pinned it exactly in place along the edges of the bed. After getting it just so, I stitched it on the machine. ’Now, when they make their beds, they can do it much faster and the spreads are always on straight.

If you don’t want to buy trim, you could mark and sew a ‘'teensy’’ tuck along the bed edges. J.E. Ellis ★ * ★ Nifty idea! Kids aren’t the only ones who have difficulty putting a “big flat seamless piece of fabric” on the bed, so anything to help line up the spread is welcome. A big special thanks for sharing! Hugs, Heloise FLOURING PANS Dear Heloise: I’ve always found it difficult to distribute flour in cake pans after greasing them. One day I decided to try putting the flour into a small, aluminum tea caddy. It worked like a charm and now the caddy’s stored in my flour cannister. F. Russell LETTER OF LAUGHTER Dear Heloise: Hope you like married life as well as I do. We waited over nine years before starting our family. I tell people I couldn’t get it straight to be respectable, do we wait nine months or nine years? so we played it safe! Mrs. Crescent Hudspeth ★ * ★ I love married life and you are a real cutie. Heloise NO SPLASHES Dear Heloise: For those who have a portable dishwasher or washing machine which empties into the sink with a SPLASH: Put a steel-wool type scouring pad under the water outlet. No splash. Less noise too! Mrs. Mary La Clair GROCERY SHOPPING Dear Heloise: If someone

Dear Abby Battered wife seeks solution to difficult problem
DEAR ABBY: My husband is a very religious man. Pete (not his real name) is also possessed of a violent temper and has beaten me up several times. The first two times I took no legal action, although I did wind up in the hospital the second time. Pete cut my fingertips with a pair of scissors and hit me over the head with the telephone, causing me to have 22 stitches in my head as well as a concussion. I was in the hospital for two weeks, and when I came out he denied laying a hand on me. He said I threw myself down the stairs and he would like to see me prove I didn’t! After I filed for divorce, Pete begged me to see a marriage counselor with him, so I did. (A man.) When the counselor pointed out Pete’s faults, Pete said, “Of course he’d stick up for you; he’s a man and you’re a woman!” Wanting to be fair, I changed to a woman counselor, and when she said Pete was in the wrong, he said, “You women always stick together.” (I can’t win.) He wants to try to make a go of our marriage, but I’m afraid he’ll beat me up again if he gets a mind to. He says the Bible says I am supposed to forgive him 70 times 7, which is 490. I forgave him three times already. Does that mean I have 487 more times to go? I don’t think I could live through it. Help me. HAD IT IN ALTOONA, PA. DEAR HAD IT: Pete is sick. “Forgive” him, but have nothing to do with him until he recovers. He’s not only mentally deranged, he’s dangerous. You need help, too. Call your family service association and inquire about assistance and counseling for the battered woman. * * * DEAR ABBY: When someone makes a donation to a charity in the name of a friend as a Christmas gift, who gets the tax deduction? Don’t pass this off so hastily. If A sends B a card saying that he has given SIOO to The Little Sisters of the Poor in B’s name, A has either made a gift to B, which is not taxdeductible (B being an individual, not a charity) or he has made no gift to B.
else does your grocery shopping, save the labels or other identification from cans or packages of your favorite foods or brands. This will help the person in choosing the right product. M.J.R. NON-SLIP RUGS Dear Heloise: To keep area rugs from sliding on slippery floors, I purchased small, round suction sink stoppers at our grocery store and placed them under the rug. They do not harm the rug and really help it to stay in place. Mrs. Charles Salvage PENCIL HOLDER Dear Heloise: On your nightstand, keep a box of facial tissues with a hole punched in the top corner of the box. Use as a stand for a pen or pencil. This is especially good for hospital patients who have trouble catching a pencil if it rolls off a bedside table. Jean Kobus CORNBREAD VARIATION Dear Heloise: For different, delicious combread, add one tablespoon of your favorite mayonnaise to the other ingredients. Supreme! Mrs. Sal Goldate * * * Come up with a ring-a-ding recipe addition? Send it to Heloise, P.O. Box 32000, San Antonio, Texas 78216. She can’t answer your letter personally but she’ll be reading it with care, looking for super hints to use in her column. DIRTY DISHES Dear Heloise: To let my family know the dishes in the dishwasher have only been rinsed and not washed, I hang
a small picture of a dirty plate on the lever that opens the door. The picture came out of a magazine that was advertising dishwasher detergent. I just covered it with clear selfsticking plastic for longerlasting quality. Patricia Monie

If A has made a gift to The Little Sisters of the Poor for B, then B should get the tax deduction. If A has made no gift to B, but rather a gift to some charity, why should he brag to B about it? I object to such “gifts.” J.C.K. DEAR J.C.K.: The person who lays out the money for a tax-deductible gift gets the deduction, not the person in whose name the donation was made. Read on for a letter from another reader who objects to the “gift-in-your-name” gift for yet another reason: DEAR ABBY: I give to those causes in which I believe, and I do not want anyone to make a donation in my name to any charity without my permission. Example: If someone made a contribution to the Equal Rights Amendment in the name of Phyllis Schlafly, I’m sure she wouldn’t appreciate it. * * * DEAR ABBY: Is there anything wrong with a girl making out just a little to keep a fellow interested in dating her? I don’t mean a great big love scene or anything like that, just a little light necking and a couple of kisses during the evening, and maybe one extra special good night kiss? I’m keeping my virtue as a matter of principle. DATING NOW DEAR DATING: That’s a dangerous game. The kind of “interest” you could arouse might cost you your principle. * * * Getting married? CANDY FOR CHRISTMAS Dear Heloise: Many families probably have candy left from that festive Halloween night, as we do, but with cavities too easy to get and calories too hard to lose, I don’t dare keep candy around. How to get rid of it without
tears and heartaches from the kids? We have a tradition of gathering all sugary treats for our Christmas candyhouse. Since the holiday is nearing, what better decoration and no one guesses my motives. S.B.N.
