Fired-up 111 gives Irish a thrashing

BLOOMINGTON, Ind (AP) Coach Bobby Knight's strategy worked to perfection. He finally found the intensity he had been seeking from his basketball players. Disgusted with Indiana's play in a season-opening victory last Saturday, Knight benched all but one of his starters and went with four freshmen in Tuesday night's game against Notre Dame. He would have started a fifth ntwv comer, but freshman Rick Rowray broke his arm in practice on Sunday, so Knight left junior Jim Thomas at starting guard. "The freshmen really fired us up and got us going,' 1 said junior forward Ted Kitchel, who came off the bench and scored 22 points to lead the I2th-ranked Jjoosiers over the I9th-rated Irish 69-55. By The Associated Press Top-ranked Anderson and No. 6 Valparaiso have learned it doesn’t pay to look ahead in Indiana high school basketball. Coach Norm Held’s Indians, who were expected to take a 4-0 record into Saturday’s action against Valparaiso, were upset 72-71 in overtime by Alexandria Tuesday night. At the same time, Valparaiso had its season opener spoiled with a 68-67 loss to No. 16 Gary Roosevelt. Greg Mercer’s free throws with 14 seconds left in the overtiipe gave unranked Alexandria a 72-70 lead. Then Anderson’s Sidney Teague missed a free throw with no time remaining that would have sent the game |nl;o a second overtime period. The victory lifted the Tigers to 3-0, while Anderson will now taljce a 3-1 record into the Classic which also includes secondranked South Bend LaSalle and No. 13 Anderson Highland. , Andre Morgan scored a gape-high 26 points for the Indians. For the game, the four freshmen combined for 17 points, hitting eight of 13 shots from the field. "Our bench came in and played not as well as our starters in the first half," Knight said. “The starters played as hard as they could, and we almost put them back in the first half. "We got big baskets in the second half when we needed them," Knigt added "And Flowers has to get a lot of credit.” The 2-0 Hoosiers’ next game is at Kentucky next Tuesday.
