Dear Abby Guess who's coming to dinner may be costly question for host
DEAR ABBY: Here’s some useful advice for the professional vocalist who is frequently asked to attend functions and sing for free. When asked to perform, ask this question: “What is your budget for entertainment?” This implies that the performer expects a fee. After all, no one would expect a plumber or an auto mechanic to donate his services, so why should entertainers be expected to? I am reminded of the story told about the wealthy socialite who asked Fritz Kreisler, the famous violinist, to “come dine with us” next Friday evening. Kreisler was delighted and accepted readily. She then quickly added, “And please bring your violin.” “Madame,” Kreisler responded, "mv violin never dines.” FELIX DE COLA DEAR FELIX: Beautiful! Kreisler should have gone and taken his violin with no strings attached. * * * DEAR ABBY: Please, please warn parents about the danger of feeding their small children peanut butter! My beautiful 2Vi year-old grandson choked on peanut butter six weeks ago. The peanut butter lodged in his throat, cutting off his oxygen. His breathing and heart stopped and he was clinically dead for several minutes. He was revived by CPR,

but there had been extensive damage to his brain. The child is still in a coma, paralyzed from the neck down. How long this dear baby will live in this condition no one knows. The baby’s father said he doesn’t want his boy to be lost in vain and has asked for help in getting the word to other parents that warning labels should be put on peanut butter jars so other children can be saved. I thank you, and am sure parents everywhere will thank you for helping to spread this message and for the lives it may save. HEARTBROKEN IN CALIF. DEAR HEARTBROKEN: Your little grandson has my prayers, and his family has my sympathy. Be assured that millions of people will read this and, 1 hope, heed the warning. I agree, a warning label should be printed on every jar of peanut butter. * * * DEAR ABBY: I want to thank you for your advice to someone else, which I borrowed and for which I am extremely grateful. For several years I’d been kicking around the idea of going to law school, but every year I’d think of the years needed for school and the required year of clerking in Canada, and I’d say, no, I’ll be too old. Then you printed a letter from a man who was 36 (the age
Hints from Heloise
Pie dough in bag: All you do is roll and bake
DEAR HELOISE: When making crusts for pies, I put a roll of pie dough in a large plastic bag. I roll the dough on one side, turn the bag to the other side and continue with the rolling. I do this until the dough is the desired thickness and size. I open the bag and insert the pie plate over the dough, turn the bag and plate over, lift plastic off dough and remove the pie plate. No floury mess to clean up and no dough to lift into the pie plate. The bag can be used many times if need be. Josephine Guagliardo ★ * ★ Pie bakers, you’re gonna love this hint if your counters look as if a white dust storm had just passed by after getting the dough in the pie plate. Thanks, Jo, for a neat (literally) trick! Incidentally, while we’re talking about pies, do you know what to do when you get all set to make the crust only to discover you’re out of shortening? Well, don’t throw in the sponge, hon, substitute peanut butter! This is one of the tips in my new book “Help! from Heloise,” just published by Arbor House. You can find it at your local bookshop and public library. Hugs, Heloise EGG CARTON USE Dear Heloise: I found a good way to save the kitchen sink counter from the mess of soap, scrubber pads etc. I’m using the top of a plastic foam egg carton to store these and other sloppy things which make a counter topyukky. It washes out right in the dishwater and is useable for some time. Mrs. M.J. Tyler
HOT POTATOES Dear Heloise: If you have leftover boiled potatoes with skins left on, they can be warmed up quickly by poking a few holes in the skin, then putting them in the oven for about 15 minutes at 350 F. I use my toaster oven for this. Mrs. Bill Gore NO LEAKY BOTTLE Dear Heloise: Plastic wrap placed between the nipple and the bottle will keep baby’s bottle from leaking all over your purse or diaper bag. A threeinch square will do. I find this works better than the stopper provided with the bottle. Barbara Zuidema FLEA COLLARS Dear Heloise: I buy whitetype flea collars for my cat and write directly on the collar in ballpoint ink the date I put it on. The ink doesn’t inhibit the effectiveness of the pesticide in the collar and the ink remains visible the entire time. This way, I am constantly reminded of the age of the collar and never let the collar expire. Some are made to last five months a long time to remember. This is also a way to kill two birds with one stone... You can make the collar into an inexpensive ID tag for your pet by simply writing the pet’s name and your phone number on it. Just be sure to do this each time the collar is replaced. Brownie Gritzmacher NO SPLASHES Dear Heloise: When emptying a can, especially one with

It hit me like a ton of bricks! I applied to and was accepted by the law school at the University of Victoria, just two miles from my home. We’re now in the seventh week of classes and I still just shake my head and pinch myself because I’m having so much fun I can’t believe it! The money is tight. My wife is working to clear the decks of everyday clutter so that I can concentrate on school. It’s a lot of work, but I love it. How can I thank you? TIM P.
