At least Boston might believe Davis is starter

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Veteran guard Johnny Davis, delegated to coining off the bench in the Pacers’ first 12 games this season, is making a strong case for keeping him in the starting lineup. Davis, a starter for most of his five years in the National Basketball Association, was sharing playing time with Billy Knight and Don Buse as a reserve at the start of the 1981-82 campaign. He moved into the starting lineup five games ago and has averaged 23.4 points per game since then to take over as the Pacers’ scoring leader Indiana, now 9-8, has scored four victories in those five games with the only loss coming in overtime to Philadelphia. Davis scored 15 of his gamehigh 21 points in the second half Tuesday, sparking the Pacers to a 90-87 victory over the defending world champion Boston Celtics. The 6-foot-2 Davis, who also had to defend against Boston guard Nate Archibald, scored six consecutive points in the fourth quarter, to give Indiana the lead for good. “Sure, I realize John wants to start. It’s only natural,” said McKinney. “But, its no big deal for us who starts. I like to play 10 guys and if they play equally well, they will play pretty much equal time. “Things are going well for us now with Buse and Davis starting in the backcourt. I had my reasons for going the other way and we’re still going to operate with Buse, Knight and Johnny alternating at guard. ” Davis tied the game for the 14th time at 82-82 with 4:36 to
