Marva Collins too good to be true
By 808 WISEIIART Newshouse News Service In tone and content, “The Marva Collins Story” reeks with the pungent odor of good intentions. The story is preposterous, going something like this: Fed up with fighting the octopus of red tape and systematic indifference, a spunky young black schoolteacher starts a school in her home in a Chicago ghetto with six students, two of them her own children. OPERATING ON something less than a shoestring, she’s sort of the Statue of Liberty of educators, crying: “Give me your tired, your poor, your underachievers.” She overcomes every obstacle placed before her by uncaring clods, takes those rejects, and turns them into little Rhodes scholars. Eventually, with 200 students and a waiting list of thousands, she becomes a national celebrity. President Reagan invites her to come to Washington and apply her common sense to the nation’s educational system from the very top. Naturally she rejects the post because she is above all a teacher. AS IT HAPPENS, “The Marva Collins Story,” scheduled Tuesday on CBS, is basically true. In fact, the film’s creators say it was toned down somewhat for TV because the real thing is such an outlandishly positive story no one would believe it. “The Marva Collins Story” stars Cicely Tyson as the indomitable Collins and Morgan Freeman as her patiently supportive blue-collar husband. It’s the latest CBS presentation of the “Hallmark Hall of Fame” series. BY NOW, THE Collins saga is fairly well known. It first came to light in the Chicago newspapers. Morley Safer followed with a “60 Minutes”

report two years ago, since repeated. But a problem with the movie is that the story IS so well known. There are no surprises and no sense of danger. You never get the feeling that Collins runs the slightest risk of bumping into a situation she can’t handle. A teacher in the city school system: “In case you haven’t noticed, Mrs. Collins, we live in a ghetto. These kids don’t want to learn.” COLLINS’ husband when he learns of her plans: “You’d just be givin’ up one set of problems for a whole set of bigger ones.” Marva: “This school is going to work. Don’t ask me how. It’s just going to work.” You don’t need a crystal ball to figure out who’s right. AS MARVA, Tyson gives her usual solid performance. We can’t recall a bad performance every by the model-turned-actress in a career that has included “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman,” “Sounder” and “Roots.” “The Marva Collins Story” is as predictable as the sunrise, but that isn’t necessarily bad news. While your head tells you one thing, your heart sends you another message. We know what happened - but it’s nice, it’s very nice that it did happen. FOR ONCE, the good guys won. We’ve got a long way to go to get even, but Marva Collins put us a little closer.
