4th Anderson team to join the top 20

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Anderson, South Bend LaSalle and Marion remained 1-2-3 today, while Anderson Highland, which extended Madison Heights to three overtimes on Saturday, was one of three newcomers to the weekly Associated Presstigh school boy’s basketball Top 20. Despite the 84-78 loss to the Pirates, Highland was picked 13th by AP’s statewide board of sports writers and broadcasters. Madison Heights, meanwhile, rose one spot to seventh. The other first-time picks to the Top 20 this season were Evansville Bosse, voted to the No. 17 spot after opening its season with an 83-63 victory "over Lebanon, and Lafayette Harrison, voted N 0.20 after raising its record to 4-0 by winning the Lafayette Jeff tournament. Jeff’s Bronchos, who lost to Harrison in the first round of the tourney on Friday, plunged six spots to 18th in this week’s poll. Anderson’s 3-0 Indians received eight of 13 first-place votes and 246 of a possible 260 rating points. LaSalle, which won its season opener against Warsaw, earned the remaining five votes for No.l and totaled 232 rating points. LaSalle plays Anderson Highland in the first round of the annual Hall of Fame Classic on Saturday. Marion (2-0) remained third with 199 points, while Indianapolis Cathedral (4-0 and 172 points; moved up one spot to fourth, exchanging places this week with Indianapolis Howe (3-0 and 169 points). Valparaiso, which plays Anderson in the other first-round game in the Hall of Fame Classic, remained sixth, followed by Madison Heights, Jeffersonville and Fort Wayne Harding, each up one spot to seventh, eighth and ninth,

respectively. Richmond jumped six spots to 10th, while Fort Wayne Wayne remained No.ll and New Albany vaulted seven places to 12th. Following Anderson Highland are Indianapolis Washington, which rose one spot to 14th despite a three-point loss to Howe; Fort Wayne Elmhurst, up five spots to 15th after winning the Huntington tourney; Gary Roosevelt, down nine rankings after losing to Gary West in the first round of the East Chicago tourney; Bosse; Lafayette Jeff; Gary Mann, down five spots to 19th after losing to East Chicago Washington in overtime; and Lafayette Harrison. Falling out of the Top 20 this week were Merrillville, which was 13th before losing two games; Whiting (17th) and defending state chamapion Vincennes (tied for 20th), both of which had still not played a game this season; and Floyd Central (18th), despite a season-opening victory over Crawford County. Classic Chairman Bud Ritter announced Monday that the no-jump ball experiment will be tried in all four games at the request of the Indiana High School Athletic Association. All states have been asked to conduct such an experiment, looking to a possible change in rules next season. Colleges eliminated the jump ball on all but the opening tip this year, and IHSAA Assistant Commissioner Charlie Maas believes the schools will follow suit. ball and give the ball out of bounds to the defensive team. The Hall of Fame Classic experiment will offer one or two new wrinkles to the college rule. The defensive team gets the ball on all player control situations, loose balls in the backcourt and rebounds where control cannot be established. Starting the first and third quarters, the visiting team will get the ball and the home team will have it the other two periods.
