Monon Bell tie only blemish in Wabash streak
By STEVE HERMAN AP Sports Writer Wabash College hasn't been beaten in football in 23 games, the longest current undefeated streak in the nation. Although it puts pressure on the Little Giants, it also acts as an incentive, .says Coach Stan Parrish “The longer you’re undefeated, the more other people get ready and fire up for you,” says Parrish, whose squad goes against Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday. j "The streak is something every other team wants to break, but it also gives us a lit;tie more incentive. We’re conscious of it, we’re proud of it, and we’re adding to a history that we’re all a part of,” he said.

Lafayette police arrested Morris Tuesday, and he had been held on $15,000 bond in the Tippecanoe County Jail. At a court hearing, prosecutors agreed with Morris’s attorney to reduce bond to $5,000. The only blemish in the past 23 games for Wabash, currently ranked N 0.2 in the NCAA Division 111, was a seasonending tie with DePauw last year. Wabash, 7-0 this season, has outscored its foes 234-49. The Little Giants have held opposing teams to 59 yards rushing per game while grinding out 260 yards per contest on the ground themselves. Tailback Daryl Johnson leads Wabash with 790 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. Quarterback Dave Broecker has completed 59 percent of his passes for 796 yards and eight touchdowns. Receiver Pete Metzelaars has caught 30 passes for 492 yards and five touchdowns.

Rawlings-made helmet he wore eight years ago, when he dislocated vertebra and damaged his spinal cord in a football tackling drill, was inadequate and failed to carry a warning to its users. Rawlings contends the helmet was made to protect only the head and that Bedan’s condition was the result of a blow

Heartland Collegiate Conference leader Franklin (7-0) plays outside the league against Carson-Newman and secondplace St. Joseph’s (5-2) is idle. Third-place Indiana Central (3-1,4-4) could move into a tie with St. Joe by beating Valparaiso (1-3,1-6). In the only other conference game, fourth-place Ashland (22, 3-4) takes on winless Georgetown (0-4,0-6). Butler (25) is at Wittenberg and Evansville (2-6) visits Missouri-Rolla in a pair of non-conference games. Purdue has great opportunity
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) Purdue’s steadily improving Boilermakers play current Big Ten Conference coleaders Ohio State and lowa back-to-back in the next two weeks, an opportunity Coach Jim Young finds challenging but exciting. “It’s a great race, and you have to be excited. Each game is a championship game now for the teams involved,” Young said. “The winner goes on to the next championship game, and the loser is out of it, so it is an exciting time.” The Boilermakers are in a five-way tie at 3-2 in the conference, a half-game behind the 3-1 Buckeyes of Ohio State and Hawkeyes of lowa. Saturday’s contest at Purdue’s Ross-Ade Stadium, moved up an hour to a 12:25 p.m. (EST) kickoff, will be regionally telecast by ABCTV.
Very few care about this game
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) Playing mainly for pride and fun, Indiana and Michigan State collide Saturday in a struggle for, well, eighth place in the Big Ten. In fact, MSU and the Hoosiers will play the only league game which can have no impact on the Big Ten lead. The two teams are trying to put the shiniest polish possible on pretty dull years. But the way the scrambled Big Ten season is going, who can say where one could wind up with a gung-ho finish? “We have two or three games left with the contenders,” said Hoosier Coach Lee Corso.
elsewhere on his body. In Thursday’s testimony, Schwab, a former teammate of Bedan on a Catholic Youth Organization football team in Greenwood, said the team’s coach never taught players to use their helmets as offensive weapons. Under cross-examination by Bedan’s attorney, Peter Obremskey, Schwab admitted he felt a sense of security when suited up in his football gear, adding he had faith in the ability of his helmet.
Southern Illinois, Notre Dame (2-4) is host to Navy, Ball State (2-5) entertains Eastern Michigan, Indiana (2-5) visits Michigan State and RoseHulman (3-2-1) takes on Sewanee in a battle for first place in the College Athletic Conference The big game in the HoosierBuckeye Conference is at Hanover, where Coach Pete Compise’s Panthers play Findlay’s Oilers in a battle for sole possession of second place. The game will be “a typical confrontation of a big, physical team against a little, quick, finesse team,” says Compise, and it matches Findlay’s muscle with Hanover’s moves. “They’re tough. They’re a big, strong, physical team.
Both teams stand 5-2 for all games this season. The contest will match a pair of outstanding passers in Ohio State’s senior quarterback Art Schlichter, who burned the Boilermakers for 289 yards and one touchdown in their last meeting three years ago, and Purdue sophomore Scott Campbell, the NCAA Division I-A passing leader this season. “Schlichter was a great quar terback as a freshman, but now he has all those games under his belt. It’s just his overa 1 ’ maturity,” Young said of the Buckeye quarterback who this season has hit 53 percent of his passes for 1,475 yards and eight touchdowns. “But passing has been our strength recently with Campbell at quarterback,” Young said. “I think Scott has done a great job. He’s a tremendous quarterback and a tremendous
“There’s not a lot of difference between a lot of teams in this league. We have four big games left, and we’re certainly hoping we can win some more games this season.” The Hoosiers invade Spartan Stadium with a 2-3 conference mark and a 2-5 overall record. But they’re only a game ahead of the ninth-place Spartans, now 1-4 in the Big Ten and also 2-5 overall. “Michigan State is playing very well right now,” Corso said. “I think they have the best receivers in the league. “I would think their No. 1 attack is the quarterbacks throwing to the three good

They live by the run, and they have some horses up front. Hopefully we can get ’em again. We’ve been successful against them three of the four years I’ve been here.” Findlay and Hanover rank 1-2 in the conference in total team offense. Findlay leads the league with 335 rushing yards per game, while Hanover is tops in passing at 251 yards per contest. Individually, Hanover’s Brett Bardwell leads the conference in total offense and in passing, while Findlay’s Ken Agee is the top rusher and is second in total offense. Both teams stand 4-1 in the HBC, while league-leading Anderson is 6-6. Findlay’s only loss was to Anderson 25-13, while
competitive, winning individual. That’s why our passing attack has come along.” Campbell has hit on 60 percent of his passes for 1,623 yards and 14 touchdowns. His chief receiver, senior flanker Steve Bryant, has caught 40 passes for 654 yards and eight touchdowns and is tied for the NCAA lead with 5.7 receptions per game. Ohio State Coach Earle Bruce says the Buckeyes won’t change their defense to guard against Campbell’s passing. “We won’t change our rush at all. We do have some tall guys rushing, but he throws on a lot of play action passing. That shouldn’t affect his throwing against us,” Bruce said. The Buckeyes and Boilermakers have played four common opponents with identical results. Both teams beat
recivers.” The “quarterbacks” are senior Bryan Clark and junior John Leister. Clark replaced Leister at mid-season but suffered a sprained thumb against Purdue last week, and it’s questionable how much he’ll play Saturday. But Leister was a standout last season and has a strong arm, so it could be worse. Three wide receivers Ted Jones, Daryl Turner and Otis Grant have more than 20 catches each. Michigan State is coming off three strong games and finally has something of a ground game. Coach Muddy Waters
Hanover’s lone setback was to Wilmington 38-8. “We think we’re getting a little bit better,” says Compise. “We hit a little lull against Wilmington. We got out a little too tight and dropped one in grand fashion. But we bounced back, and the kids are responding well.” Anderson plays its only nonconference game of the season on Saturday against Olivet Nazarene. Hanover will play Anderson in the season-finale Nov. 14, so the Panthers could tie the Ravens for the championship by winning the rest of their games. Hanover, Anderson and Wilmington tied for the league title last year. Anderson, currently/ranked fourth nationally by the NAIA,
Michigan State, Stanford and Illinois, and both lost to Wisconsin. The winner on Saturday, Young said, will be “the team that has the fewest turnovers, does the best job in the kicking phase of the game and we’re concerned about that because we didn’t do a good job against Michigan State last week and the team that is able to get the big plays offensively.” “We haven’t turned the ball over a great number of times, and that would be a strength,” Young said. “We’re still improving and we’re playing the toughest part of our schedule now. What kind of a team we are will be decided this Saturday and on the other Saturdays down the line.” Ohio State has improved, too, says Bruce, although Buckeye receivers dropped the ball five times last week.
says his club can “play with anybody.” “Indiana is a very impressive football team,” Waters said. “We’re not going to take the game lightly. We don’t even take our scrimmages lightly.” Indiana lost last week to Ohio State and has beaten only Northwestern and Minnesota. The key Hoosier is quarterback Babe Laufenberg, a 6-foot-2, 188-pound junior college transfer from California. Another junior college transfer, sophomore split end Duane Gunn, is a triple-threat player as receiver, runner and kickoff return specialist. He has caught 29 passes
