DPU win equals a record At first glance, Saturday’s DePauw-Washington game in St. Louis would seem to be a tailor-made matchup for Tiger graduate student Alan Hill. The Battling Bears, 2-4 on the season, like to throw. Their quarterback. Tim Huggins, is a strong-armed sophomore who was highly touted last year before breaking his jaw on his third collegiate play for scrimmage. THEIR TOP receiver, Dave Bolton, is almost a carbon copy of Hill Bolton is fast, he’s an All-America candidate, he’s never missed a game due to injury, and professional scouts are interested in him. Another striking similarity is that both are reigning Division 111 champions - Hill in the pde vault, Bolton in the decathlon. But the dream ends there. Hill suffered a mild concussion in the final minutes of last week's Olivet Nazarene squeaker and won't even make the trip. Starting in Hill's stead will be Bob Klupchak, who will make the switch from his starting cormerback position to his; natural safety position. Freshman Tom Clark will start at cornerback. WITH TWO starters who were once ranked one and two nationally in interceptions out, DePauw will be depending more than ever on its solid line to provide pressure. “We must rely on pressure from the front," coach Nick Mourouzis said, “and the remainder of our defense must rise to the occasion and play to the best of their abilities. Tom Chirk was a good defensive halfback in high school, he has a nose for the ball, he has good defensive

| Dallas can control destiny, but what of Eagles?

By WILLIAM N. WALLACE c. 1981 N.Y. Times News Service NEW YORK Rivalries in the National Football League warm and cool according to the success of the teams involved, and the most fiery confrontation currently is the one between the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles. It will be renewed in Philadelphia Sunday. Two years ago the Eagles replaced the fading Redskins as the major rival of the Cowboys in the National Conference and last season beat them twice, the second time convincingly in Philadelphia for the conference championship. The Eagles were the home team because they had replaced the Cowboys as the winner of the Eastern Division. These teams spar off the field, too. For example the Eagles in the conference title game chose to wear white uniforms, rather than their usual home green, which put the Cowboys in their blue jerseys, supposedly jinxed because Dallas has had a better record when wearing white than blue. That small gesture rankled Tex Schramm, the president of the Cowboys, as did the excessive praise heaped upon the Dallas team by Dick Vermeil, the Eagle coach. “He was trying to set us up,” Schramm said earlier this week. He also said Vermeil resembled George Allen, the former Redskin coach, when it came to devious and distracting tactics. Vermeil denied the charge and again praised the Cowboys as the finest organization in pro football The standings are more pertinent With the regular season half complete, the Eagles have lost or>ly once and lead the

reaction and movement, and he has performed well this week in practice.” “They like to throw a lot,” Mourouzis added, “they threw the ball 60 per cent of the time in their past two games. We must be prepared to stop the pass at all times. If Huggins has enough time, he can hurt you. We must pressure him.” One break in the Tigers’ favor is that Washington lost its best lineman, Dennis McGrew, to a leg injury this week. McGrew was one of two juniors on the WU line, the other four starters

record price of $30,175 million, was announced at a news conference Thursday by former owner Ruly Carpenter, whose family purchased the National League team in 1943 for approximately $500,000. Giles said his three main goals were to have the Phillies be declared “team of the

One was by junior back Doug Freeman, who picked off three passes on the day. “Their cornerbacks are quick,” Mourouzis said. “I’m impressed with their man-to-man coverage and the abilities of their secondary. They use multiple fronts with different stunts and games by the linebackers.”

World champs may not be together much longer

NEW YORK (AP) The Los Angeles Dodgers, survivors of baseball’s longest season, celebrated their world championship with a parade in their city today. But it could be the last hurrah for the team which ended years of frustration by defeating the New York Yankees in six games to win the World Series. There are rumblings that despite their championship, the Dodgers brass could be ready to begin breaking up this veteran team, which has been intact for so long. Of the nine Dodger starters in the final game of the Series, only one, Pedro Guerrero, was under the age of 30. That had a lot to do with the emotion the veterans felt at finally winning the world chamionship which had eluded them for so long. “We were tired of losing to these guys,” said catcher Steve Yeager, who shared the Series most valuable player award with Guerrero and third baseman Ron Cey. “We were beaten in 1977 and 1978 and we felt our time had come.” First baseman Steve Garvey sounded a little wistful about the possibility that this cast of Dodgers may not all be back when spring training begins next year. “As the song says, ‘lt’s not for me to say,”’ he began. “This is certainly the end of a very sentimental journey. Our infield that

INTERCONFERENCE San Francisco (6-2) at Pittsburgh (5-3) An interesting match between teams that last met three years ago. Mourouzis will be counting on the return to form of quarterback Rob Doyle, who completed only three of 15 passes at Olivet Nazarene. In all fairness to Doyle, most of those passes were into the teeth of a prairie wind, and most were on screen patterns which Olivet had read and covered well, forcing Doyle to get rid of the ball. “They just took away our screens,” recalled Mourouzis, “so we had to go other forms of attack. ’ ’ RICK LINDLOW will be shooting for his third consecutive 100-plus yard game as-

“I have not enjoyed what I’ve seen happening in this grand old game the past five or six years,” said the 41-year-old Carpenter, who succeeded his father Bob as president of the team in 1972. “That’s primarily the reason I’m selling.” Carpenter probably will remain in the organization as

Flanker Kevin Perkins, held to one catch last week, will be looking to get back into the groove along with Doyle. Like Bolton, Perkins has 34 catches on the season, though Bolton has 619 yards on his receptions to 514 for Perkins. The game will be broadcast on WGRE-FM (91.5) and will begin at 8 p.m. local time.

has played together so long may not be together much longer. What better way to go out than with a world championship?” Garvey said he will never forget the instant Ken Landreaux caught Bob Watson’s final out fly ball, ending the Series. “There will never really be another moment like it,” he said. “It’s been 25 years of blood and sweat. Baseball is a team sport and the ultimate is to be a world champion. I will admit, I did have tears in my eyes.” Garvey, 32, Cey, 33, second baseman Davey Lopes, 35, and shortstop Bill Russell, 33, have played as a unit since 1973, a record for an infield remaining intact. But Lopes has had two bad years in a row and committed a record six errors in the Series. Waiting in the wings are two candidates Steve Sax, promoted from San Antonio of the Texas League where he was the most valuable player in 1981, and Jack Perconte, who’s had a couple of solid years at Albuquerque of the Pacific Coast League. Two other young sluggers, outfielder Candy Maldonado and first baseman Mike Marshall, both had big years at Albuquerque and carry can’t-miss major league credentials. Houston (4-4) at Cincinnati (5-3) How could the Bengals trounce Pittsburgh and then lose to New Orleans? A lot of the Oilers’ problems trace to an offensive line that has slipped and no longer blocks well for the run. Betting line: Cincinnati by 4. Kansas City (6-2) at San Diego (5-3) The Chicago defensive coach, Buddy Ryan, contained the Charger attack with five linemen and five backs, and Dan Fouts, the passer, had a terrible day. But the Chiefs do not have five effective defensive linemen. Joe Delaney, their impressive rookie running back, is hurt and another rookie, Billy Jackson, replaces him. Bill Kenney, relieved in last game by Steve Fuller, starts again at quarterback. Betting line: San Diego by 6' 2 . Baltimore (1-7) at Miami (5-2-1) The Colts have lost seven straight and possess the poorest defensive statistics by far. In spite of five interceptions against Dallas, the Dolphin quarterback, David Woodley, is a solid part of a solid team. Betting line: Miami by 7> 2 . New England (2-6) at Oakland (3-5) Both teams have regained their injured fullbacks, Mark van Eeghen for the Raiders and Sam Cunningham for the Patriots. So the Patriots will go for a ball-control offense to protect their vulnerable defense. The Raiders, with a new quarterback, Marc Wilson, have been too conservative. Betting line: Oakland by 1. Celtics and 76ers are teams to beat

By GARY MYERS AP Sports Writer Four years ago, Philadephia lost in the National Basketball Association finals to the Portland Trail Blazers and Julius Erving appeared in commercials telling the 76ers’ fans, “We owe you one.’’ The Sixers open the NBA season tonight owing five. Following last year’s playoff disappointment, when they lost three straight to the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference finals after being ahead 3-1, Philadelphia faces the same obstacle in its quest for the elusive championship the Boston Celtics. Boston is trying to become the first NBA team to successfully defend its title since the Celtics of 1968-69 were winning their 11th championship in 13 years. The usual sellout crowd is expected at the Boston Garden to greet the Celtics for the first time since they defeated the Houston Rockets for the title in six games, while the Sixers are home against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Philadelphia and Boston each won 62 regular-season games last year before waging their titanic struggle in the playoffs. With basically the same teams back on both sides, the Boston-Philadelphia division race and possible playoff encounter could again be the highlight of the NBA season. The NBA pushed back the start of the season to avoid conflict with the World Series. The strategy didn’t fulfill all its goal of drumming up preseason interest because baseball added another playoff due to the players’ strike. The NBA’s late start, however, means the playoffs won’t end until the middle of June. Twenty of the 23 teams are in action tonight, with only Seattle, San Diego and Atlanta idle. Besides the Washington-Boston and ClevelandPhiladelphia games, the rest of the schedule includes: The New York Knicks helping inaugurate the new Meadowlands Arena when they meet the New Jersey Nets; the Milwaukee Bucks at the Detroit Pistons; the Chicago Bulls at the Indiana Pacers; the San Antonio Spurs at the Kansas City Kings; the Golden State Warriors at the Denver Nuggets; the Dallas Mavericks at the Utah Jazz; the Phoenix Suns at Portland and in a game that will be televised live by CBS at 11:30 p.m. EST, the Los Angeles Lakers will host the Rockets. The Celtics’ route to a second successive championship will be most severely challenged by the Sixers, Lakers, Sonics, Suns and Bucks. But if any team in that span has been capable of repeating, Boston seems the most likely. Their frontcourt of Larry Bird, Cedric Maxwell, Robert Parish, Kevin McHale and Rick Robey is among the best in the league. Elsewhere in the Atlantic Division, the Knicks figure to be stronger with the addition of veterans Maurice Lucas, Mike Newlin and Randy Smith. The Nets, with more than 11,000 season tickets sold in their new arena, have a

new coach (Larry Brown), new players (Buck Williams, Ray Tolbert, Albert King and Ray Williams) and an old problem the lack Of a bona fide center. The Bullets’ days of Wes Unseld, Elvin Hayes, Mitch Kupchak and Bobby Dandridge are over. Washington has signed veteran Spencer Haywood, in addition to acquiring in trades John Lucas, Jim Chones and Brad Holland. The Central Division could be a tossup between Atlanta, Milwaukee and Chicago, providing all have their full teams. Due to an incredible string of injuries, the Hawks, under new Coach Kevin Loughery, will begin the season without starters Wes Matthews, Eddie Johnson and John Drew and a top reserve, A 1 Wood. The Bucks are without forward Marques Johnson, a holdout. The Bulls are without unsigned Orlando Woolridge, their No.l pick. The Pistons have new life with Isiah Thoipas and Kelly Tripucka; the Pacers have benched George McGinnis in favor of Louis Orr, and the Cavaliers hope free agents James Edwards, Bobby Wilkerson and Scott Wedman turn the struggling franchise around. In the Midwest, perhaps the weakest of the four divisions, the Kansas City Kings are a new-look team. Gone are free agents Otis Birdsong and Wedman. The new Kings include Steve Johnson, Cliff Robinson, Eddie Johnson and Kevin Loder. The Rockets brought back Hayes, a familiar face in Houston, to team with Moses Malone; the Spurs have the “Bruise Brothers” frontline, a collection of tough, aggressive rebounders, and George Gervin in the backcourt, which means they will score a lot of points. Denver, with its new run-and-gun style under Doug Moe, will have much-improved Kiki Vandeweghe for a full season. Utah always scores a lot of points with Adrian Dantley and Darrell Griffith and hopes that No.l pick Danny Schayes can get some rebounds. And the Mavericks, with rookies Mark Aguirre, Rolando Blackman and Jay Vincent, should do better than the 15 games they won in their first year. In the Western Divison, the Lakers’ starting five of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kupchak, Jamaal Wilkes, Magic Johnson and Norm Nixon is among the best. The Sonics, with Gus Williams back and Lonnie Shelton healthy, are a different team than the one that won just 34 games last year. The Suns will have a tough time replacing guard Walter Davis, out six weeks with a fractured elbow. The Blazers have lots of talent with Mychal Thompson, Kelvin Ransey, Jim Paxson and Billy Ray Bates. The Warriors will rely on Bernard King and Lloyd Free to keep them in games with rebounder Larry Smith holding out. and the Clippers are building around Michael Brooks and Tom Chambers. New rules include 12-man rosters, elimination of the penalty shot on free throws and elimination of a shot on backcourt fouls unless a team is over the limit.

sparingly during the regular season, has asked repeatedly to be traded. If there are changes to be made, the Dodgers were not thinking about them today. They were accepting the congratulations of their city. Manager Tommy Lasorda apd owner Peter O’Malley were to receive the keys to the city. ) Meanwhile, combustible New York Yankee owner George Steinbrenner promised there would be some changes in his club. Moments after the final out of the sixth game, Steinbrenner issued an apology to the people of New York and said: “We will be at work immediately to prepare for 1982.” Among the decisions facing Steinbrenner are the status of several unsigned Yankee veterans, headed by slugger Reggie Jackson and pitcher Ron Guidry. They are eligible for free agency, and another unsigned veteran Yankee, outfielder Lou Piniella, is certain there will be changes. “Sure, they’ll make changes,” he said. “George doesn't stand still, but I’m sure they'll be for the good of the club. Hopefully, a lot of us will be back, but we all know some of us won’t.” Jackson, a World Series loser for the first time after being a member of five world championship teams, said: “We’ve got a lot of guys who know what’s going on. We’ve got a lot of older guys who know they may not be around next season.”
