Kissing his wife at traffic light costs physician S4O in fines NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Waiting for a traffic light to turn green, Dr. Ron Cherry kissed his wife, Melissa, in the seat beside him. The buss could cost them S4O. “It’s ridiculous to get a ticket for kissing your own wife,” Cherry said Thursday. He and his bride of four months both are resident physicians at Vanderbilt Hospital. They were driving to a movie when William Brook, a motorcycle policeman, started writing tickets. The problem, Brook said, was that the light turned green and the doctors kept on kissing. And kissing at an intersection can be a misdemeanor, with a sls fine. “I just don’t see how, with his head turned the way it was, he could have seen out of but one eye when he went around the corner," the patrolman said On Dec. 10 in General Sessions Court, Cherry said, he will explain that he stopped kissing his bride of four months when he turned the corner to go to a movie. "If they weren’t kiss ng when he turned the corner, they were doing a pretty good imitation," said Brook. But things sort of went downhill from there. Brook looked at the Kentucky license tags and asked to see the registration for the couple’s 1981 car. And he just kept writing tickets. "The first ticket was tor careless driving because we were kissing at an intersection,” Cherry said. “Then, there was another one for not having a Tennessee license plate and the last one was for not having a Metro sticker. The whole thing came out to S4O worth of fines.” Cherry said he would do it again. “Even if we have to pay a fine, I can tell you it’s not going to keep us from kissing in the car in the future,” he said.

Watt scraps Colorado River hydro project
c. 1981 N.Y. Times WASHINGTON - Interior Secretary James Watt gave conservationists a victory Thursday by dropping plans for a hydroelectric project that would have affected the flow of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. In a statement, Watt said the project under study, which would have increased electric peaking power at the Glen Canyon Dam above the Grand Canyon, was “the wrong idea at the wrong place at the v'rong time.” The project would have boosted the capacity of the Glen Canyon power plant by 250

New Jersey physician planned own son's murder for KKK case testimony
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - A nationwide alert has been issued for a 54-year-old physician charged with plotting to kill his son for testifying against the family in a Klanrelated shooting. Dr. James C. Morrison of Barnegat was indicted Thursday on charges of trying to hire an undercover state trooper to kill his son, James Morrison Jr., and his son’s wife, whom authorities refused to name. The couple was not hurt. “I brought him into this world and I’ll take him out of it ” the indictment quoted Morrison as telling the trooper. The elder Morrison’s •hereabouts were not known. Osann, director of the water resources program of the National Wildlife Federation, said the proposed hydroelectric project would have been “calamitous” for the natural features along the bottom of the Grand Canyon as well as for the recreation provided for rafters, boaters and others who use the Colorado through the canyon. In announcing his recommendation to stop the study of the project, Watt said: “At

The elder Morrison planned the killing after his son’s testimony in a 1980 case concerning the firing of two rifle shots into the home of a black family across the street from the Morrisons’ house, the indictment said. Recession will be over quickly: Treasury chief
By The Associated Press There’s new agreement that the nation is in a recession, but Treasury Secretary Donald Regan says that will not cause the Reagan administration to “lunge for the panic button.” Regan’s remark Thursday night in Chicago came hours after the Commerce Department reported that its index of leading indicators a barometer of trends fell 2.7 percent in September, the biggest drop since April 1980. Since April 1981, the index has fallen 5.5 percent. The White House and many economists believe a recession has arrived, and the index foretells an economy sinking
Americans pessimistic about economy, poll shows
NEW YORK (AP) Americans are more pessimistic about the economy than at any time since Ronald Reagan became president, according to the latest Associated Press-NBC News poll. But while Reagan got his lowest marks for handling the economy and there was less optimism about the economy in general than in any previous poll in 1981, the poll reported no change in how respondents foresee their family finances over the next year. The poll, of 1,598 adults telephoned Sunday and Monday in a scientific random sampling, said 23 percent think the economy

The fluctuation would also mean fewer boat and float trips down the river, he said. Thursday’s decision was the latest in a series of recent actions by Watt that has con-

The father, convicted on a narcotics charge in 1970, was charged with illegal possession of a firearm by a convict. The disposition of that charge could not be immediately determined. James Morrison Jr. turned state’s evidence in the case and was given a SIOO fine and a suspended 30-day sentence. Aaron Morrison and Hand pleaded guilty and received three-month jail terms in April. Earlier this month, for example, he announced his support for legislation prohibiting federal flood insurance for new development of nowundeveloped barrier islands. question is how far it is going to drop.” But Dederick and other analysts say they don’t foresee a downturn as sharp as last year’s recession. Meanwhile, the Labor Department reported Thursday that overall business productivity fell at an annual rate of 1.9 percent in the third quarter, the biggest decline since the first quarter of 1978. Regan said that “since the capital-gains and businessincentive (tax) cuts, together with personal tax relief, are already a reality, I believe the current recession will be mild, its end certain and swift.” Recessions generally ease the

The five previous times this year when the AP-NBC News poll asked about the future of the economy, the average response was 38 percent better and 22 percent worse. But while respondents in the latest poll were more pessimistic about the overall economy, they remained consistent with polls earlier this year in regard to the future of their family finances during the next year: 20 percent said their families will be better off, 26 percent said worse off, 52 percent said about the same and
bitterly fought by conservation groups. These actions suggest Watt is seeking to dampen the loud outcry against him by the environmental groups by demonstrating that, contrary to their charges, he is sensitive to environmental issues. However, Thursday’s decision is only a “qualified” victory for the environmentalists, according to T. Destry Jarvis, director of federal activities for the National Parks and Conservation Association. Jarvis said that while the decision had been made not to build the two new generators,

demand for credit, allowing interest rates to fall further, some analysts said. But just one major bank, the nation’s seventh-largest, cut its prime lending rate because of lower market rates. Continental Illinois National Bank & Trust Co. of Chicago lowered its prime one-half percentage point to 17.5 percent. No other major banks matched the cut Thursday. The prime is the rate large corporations can get. But that one cut, combined with the indicators’ decline, sent bond prices soaring, with some issues gaining more than 2 points, or S2O for each SI,OOO in face value.
the Bureau of Reclamation still was planning to increase the peaking power from the Glen Canyon project by rewinding and upgrading existing turbines. This, he said, would lead to fluctuations of the river, although not by as much as envisioned in the original project. His assertion was confirmed by a spokesman for the Salt Lake City office of the Reclamation Bureau. Jarvis also said he was concerned about the Bureau’s plans to find alternatives for increasing the power flow. “We can’t trade off Canyonlands National Park for the Grand Canyon National Park.”

2 percent were not sure. The most recent poll said more people may be thinking 1981 has been a better financial year for their families than 1980 was: 25 percent said their families are better off financially now than a year ago, while only 19 percent said they were better off last January than they were in January, 1979. For a poll based on about 1,600 interviews, the results are subject to an error margin of 3 percentage points either way because of chance variations.
