Coping with stress key at Cummins
By DAVID BARR Banner-Graphic Civic Affairs Editor Need for an intervention service to turn stress around before it creates conditions with which the victim can not cope was advocated by Edward Johnson, executive director of Cummins Mental Health Center when he spoke to the Greencastle Kiwanis Club Thursday in the DePauw Union. JOHNSON SAID THOSE who walk into the center for help have already suffered the effects of stress brought on by many causes in our modern society. While the center has no cure for stress, it does have the resources to help people cope with their problems. Such help is available to children, older adults and those with forms of mental illness. Johnson said that statistics indicate a

had his photographs published in newspapers and magazines and has taught color photography at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. HIS INTEREST IN photography began at the age of six when he started shooting with a Kodak Brownie box camera. By the time he was 10 he had moved up to a 35mm Argus, was developing his own film and a few years later was in his own darkroom in the corner of the family’s basement. Pocket money in the summers came photographing children and babies door to door. “I’m a social scientist, not by training by observation” Julian said. “My interest in photography has been in photo-journalism. Perhaps that is because my ambition has always been to be a journalist. I have
rise in stress-related problems which may bring about child abuse, suicide, physical illnesses and job-related pressures. WHILE THERE IS AN increased awareness of stress in our society, the facts reveal that people are living in a different age in which individuals are worried about global chaos, unemployment and lack of family stability and support. Stress is costly, Johnson said, citing worker absenteeism and lowered productivity. The results of this are reflected in higher costs for health insurance, the speaker said. Also in the harvest of stress is welfare costs to taxpayers, plus its effects on the criminal justice system and increasing

always admired the ‘Fourth Estate,’ however, I find it extraordinarily difficult to express myself with my pen. I write instead with my camera. Through my photography I am able to say something about the essence of humankind with a brevity and clarity unmatched by words. “Photographers, like scientists, see things others do not. For me, every face tells a story.” MOST OF JULIAN’S works in his current show measure two feet by three feet. This is the .first showing of this collection, according to David Herrold, assistant professor of art who is coordinating Julian’s show. The photographer will be on hand Sunday for the opening and will return to the campus in January to offer a Winter Term course in color slides.
costs of health care. “WE AT CUMMINS SEE and deal with the impact of stress after it happens,” Johnson said, noting that the costs to society would be less if the marks of stress were recognized earlier and dealt with before visits to the center became a necessity. Cummins Mental Health encompasses Putnam and Hendricks counties with offices in Greencastle, Brownsburg and Plainfield It is one of 30 such community facilities in Indiana. Outpatient and inpatient care may be provided with help available to various human agencies, such as schools, courts, etc. Costs which can not be met throug normal channels must come from the state.
