'Hill Street Blues' in good company

By 808 WISEHART Newhouse News Service NEW YORK-Now that “Hill Street Blues” has won more Emmy Awards (eight) than any series in TV history, two questions must be asked. Will viewers continue to ignore it? For all its worth, “Hill Street Blues” is not a popular show. . off the air? If “Hill Street" does go down the drain this season after acclaim, a bushel-basket full of Emmys and recognition as the finest TV series watched by practically no one, it wouldn’t be the first time that sort of thing has happened. There is a long list of eminently worthwhile TV series that have been (a) good, (b) praised, (c) awarded —and (d) canceled because viewers didn’t give a hoot. Here are few. “East Side, West Side”: If ever anything could be called ahead of its time, it is this series (1963-64) that starred George C. Scott and Cicely Tyson. As Neil Brock, a New York City social worker, the great Scott attacked the role with the vitality and rage of a dozen men, giving us an early taste of the actor we’d later see in “Patton” and “The Hospital.” Like “Hill Street,’’ everything wasn’t neatly tied up at the end of each show. TV audiences of the early ’6os just weren’t ready for the grim vision of reality this series had to offer. CBS was never able to sell the whole hour to sponsors and lost money on every show. Though critics were unanimous in their praise, “East Side, West Side” barely limped through one season. “My World and Welcome To It”: A charming, whimsical situation comedy based on the writings and drawings of the magnificent American humorist James Thurber. John Monroe (William Windom) was a writer and cartoonist for a New York City magazine based on the character Thurber defined for himself

over four decades of work. Monroe was in a state of constant bemusement, confused by life and mortified by and fearful of women. The series was warm, gentle and tried to amuse the audience in an intelligent way rather than go for the big guffaw. Needless to say, it never caught on. “The Westerner”: Nobody remembers this 1960 series because only 13 episodes made it on the air. Nevertheless, it was a gem. Brian Keith, an underrated actor in part because he rarely gets roles equal to his skills, played drifter Dave Blasingame, accompanied by a big mongrel dog, the same mutt featured in the Disney movie “Old Yeller,” as he roamed the Old West. Sam Peckinpah created, produced and directed the series, which came before his macho-violent heyday in feature films such as “Straw Dogs” and “The Wild Bunch.” “The Westerner” still represents Peckinpah’s best work. “Slattery’s People”: A series about the idealistic leader of the minority party in the legislature of an unnamed state doesn’t sound like it would possess a great deal of audience appeal. “Slattery’s People” (1964-65) didn’t, but it was still a highquality show. In his first starring role after “The Real McCoys,” Richard Crenna was a low-key version of Scott’s character in “East Side, West Side” without Scott’s outrage and abrasiveness. Ed Asner had a co-starring role as politician Frank Radcliff, his first major departure from the homicidal goons and slobbering thugs he had played to that time. Obviously, the eight Emmys won by “Hill Street Blues” will look good in trophy cases. But they are no guarantee of success. Just ask George C. Scott, William Windom, Brian Keith and Richard Crenna.
