May begins jobhunting
(c) 1981 Chicago Sun-Times He came to the Bulls as the second pick in the NBA draft, college basketball’s player of the year. Five years later Scott May went from the Bulls, not even surviving until the final cuts. “I could criticize but it wouldn’t do any good,” May said after being told Tuesday he had been placed on waivers. “This is not my team, I have no control over it.” So May, billed in 1976 as the player who would save an aging franchise, becomes a victim of age himself. He is expected to clear waivers and become a free agent. “I don’t want to put on a suit and tie yet,” he said. “Right now I just want to get back into the league. I want to go with a team who will use me and who has a team concept. I’m not that old (27) and I still have confidence.”

The guaranteed part of May’s original contract with the Bulls ran out after last season, although he still had two years to go on the contract. His salary is estimated to be SIBO,OOO, part of the reason teams may not claim him on waivers. If they wait and he becomes a free agent, they could sig him for about half that. “His contract really isn’t high by today’s standards,” said general manager Rod Thorn, “but free agents play for a lot less. Scott will be on an NBA team.” Thorn said he tried all fall to make a trade for May, but found no one who wanted him badly enough to give up a draft choice and absorb his salary. One of the most popular Bulls, May never played a full season because of an assortment of ailments, from surgery on both knees to mononucleosis.
Passing has become Big Ten's 'Bl trademark
CHICAGO (AP) - Coach Earle Bruce of Ohio State remembers that in the 19605, “The Big Ten was a defensive conference, now it’s more wide open. There’s talent everywhere.” Most of that talent is in the passing game with as fine a contigent of quarterbacks as can be found in any conference in the nation. Four Big Ten quarterbacks rank among the top 11 in the nation in passing efficiency, led by Scott Campell of Purdue, who is No. 1 in both the conference and the nation. Tony Eason of Illinois is second in the Big Ten and fifth in the country. Babe Laufenberg is third in the Big Ten and 11th in the nation and Bryan Clark of Michigan State is fifth in the conference and eighth nationally. Where there used to be a number of runners averaging 100 yards a game, currently there is only one Butch Woolfolk of Michigan. Woolfolk is
Wildcats would rather pass
EVANSTON, 111. (AP) - Northwestern can earn a dubious distinction Saturday when it plays Wisconsin in a Big Ten Conference football game. If Northwestern loses, it will mark the Wildcats’ 28th consecutive defeat. That would tie them with Virginia and Kansas State in the NCAA record book as the team with the longest major-college losing streak. Losing teams usually have the psychological advantage of catching their opponents looking ahead or suffering a letdown, but under the circumstances even that isn’t working for Northwestern. “Even if a team isn’t going to the Rose Bowl there’s a chance of going to another bowl,” Northwestern Coach Dennis Green said Tuesday. “So, instead of looking past us, we become a team the other teams have to beat. They can’t afford to slip

averaging 142 yards a game, far ahead of Frank Jacobs of Minnesota at 96.8. Eason leads the conference in total offense, averaging 333.2 yards a game in five Big Ten games. He is also third nationally. Campbell is second in the Big Ten with 263.8 yards per game. Steve Bryant of Purdue is the leading receiver, with 31 passes for 484 yards. Mike Martin of Illinois is second with 26 catches for 532 yards. Bob Atha of Ohio State is the leading scorer with 45 points in four conference games. Atha has one touchdown, 12 extra points and nine field goals: Jacobs is second with 36 points on six touchdowns. Wisconsin’s Matt Vanden Boom leads in interceptions with five and Jeff Brown of lowa is tops in punt returns with a 12.6 average. Manny Henry of Minnesota leads in kickoff returns with a 25.9 average, while Ricky Edwards of Northwestern is
up. A letdown doesn’t exist anymore. “With seven teams in the race for the (conference) title, every game becomes a big game. It’s possible that the Big Ten can send five teams to different bowl games. And if that happens, it’ll even be tougher nxt season. “Nobody is going to take it easy on us. If we’re going to win a football game, we’re going to have to play better and get some breaks which we haven’t had. And we’ve played some good football teams who have had a combined record of 32-16. “Frankly, I’d like to play someone who is not very good right now.” Unfortunately for Northwestern, that’s not going to happen. The Wildcats’ final four games are against Wisconsin, Michigan State, Ohio State and Illin9is. All are still in the run-

second at 23.7. Reggie Roby, the No. 1 punter in the nation, has a 46.0 average in the conference, a shade above the 45.6 of Don Bracken of Michigan. Illinois leads the Big Ten in passing and total offense. The Illini are averaging 347 yards a game passing and 429.2 in total offense. Michigan leads the league in rushing with 296.4 yards a game and lowa is tops in scoring with a 31.2 average. But more than half of the Hawkeyes’ points came im the 64-0 rout of Northwestern. lowa leads in every team defensive category. lowa leads in rushing defense on a yield of 83.5 yards a game with Ohio State second at 97.5. The Hawkeyes lead in pass defense by allowing only 169.5 yards a game, in total defense, giving up 253 yards a game to 289.7 for second place Ohio State, and in scoring defense, with 11.7 points a game to 13.4 for second-place Michigan.
ning for the Big Ten title except for Michigan State, which has been the most improved team in the league the last three weeks. Bus Green isn’t giving up. “We’ve played some decent defensive football,” he said. “Our problem now is that we aren’t making our opponents feel like they can’t go right down on the field and score the first time they have the ball. It’s a combination of our futility on offense and our inability to stop teams early in the game. “We lose the advantage of being the underdog by not doing something early and making the other team panic,” said Green. “We’re not aggressive and we are not forcing the other teams to make mistakes.” In conference games, Northwestern is last in giveaways and takeaways. The Wildcats have lost the ball 12 times on fumbles or interceptions.
