Oilers have seen these Steelers before
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Nobody seems to know who the real Pittsburgh Steelers are least of all the Steelers themselves. “I hope these are the real Steelers ’cause we sure didn't play like ouselves last week,” linebacker Jack Ham said after Pittsburgh rebounded from a 34-7 pounding in Cincinnati eight days earlier to beat the Houston Oilers 26-13 Monday night. The victory put the Steelers, 5-3, back into a first-place tie with the Bengals in the American Conference Central Division. The loss dropped the Oilers a game back into a tie with Cleveland. “I don’t know who the real Steelers are, but I’d like to think we’re getting back to where we used to be,” said quarterback Terry Bradshaw. He threw two touchdown passes, a 46-yard
Roveto hopes to get kicks with revengeon Tampa
LAKE FOREST, 111. (AP) - “First of all,’’ says John Roveto, “nobody trusts a kicker. It’s the position that we’re put in.” The position is usually one of being able to win or lose a football game. It’s the position Roveto was in Sunday twice. Previously cut by Dallas and Tampa Bay, Roveto missed an 18-yard chip shot which might have provided the Chicago Bears a victory in regulation time. Given another chance, he
College poll status quo for once
By The Associated Press Penn State is only the second team in seven weeks not to fumble away the No.l spot in The Associated Press college football poll, while intrastate rival Pittsburgh has held on again for the second spot. The Nittany Lions avoided the upset jinx that had knocked Michigan, Notre Dame, Southern California and Texas off the top perch over a sixweek period. Only Southern Cal was voted No.l for two straight weeks until Penn State did it in the poll released Monday. Clemson climbed into third place, but its Atlantic Coast Conference rival, North
Former Dodger great Pete Reiser dies at 62
c. 1981 N.Y. Times NEW YORK - Pete Reiser, former Brooklyn Dodger star outfielder who won the National League batting title in 1941, died Sunday night after a long respiratory illness in Palm Springs, Calif., a family spokesman said Monday. He was 62 years old. Reiser, a native of St. Louis, was considered a potential superstar when he came to the majors, but his career was hampered by injuries. A speedy, exciting player who stood 5 feet 11 inches and weighed 185 pounds, he stole many bases and chased flies with reckless abandon, often crashing into outfield walls. His flashy style earned him the nickname Pistol Pete. In 1941, his first full season

bomb to Jim Smith in the first quarter and a game-winning 6yarder to John Stallworth to break a 13-13 tie with 3:41 to play. ‘‘A game like this does a world of good for your confidence,” added Bradshaw. The Steelers beat the Oilers the way they’ve always beaten them, by virtually shutting down Earl Campbell. The National Football League’s three-time rushing champion, whose best game against Pittsburgh was a mere 109 yards two years ago, was held to just 56 on 23 carries over Three Rivers Stadium’s rain-soaked artificial turf. He also fumbled four times, losing two of them, to kill a pair of scoring threats. Quarterback Ken Stabler intimated he wasn’t pleased that the Oilers relied so heavily on Campbell. “The I-Formation works if Earl’s getting 150-175
kicked a 26-yarder in overtime to lift the Bears to a 20-17 triumph over the powerful San Diego Chargers. “I try to make my failures help me succeed,” said Roveto, who was signed as a free agent by the Bears two days after they had cut Hans Nielsen for missing what would have been a game-tying field goal at Minnesota on Oct. 4. “The field goal I missed did a lot for me,” said Roveto. “Maybe it was God’s way of

with the team, he led the league in batting (.343), slugging percentage (.558), total bases (299) and runs scored (117). Of his many mishaps, the worst occurred in 1942. At a time when he was hitting .350, he crashed into the center-field wall in St. Louis while running for a fly. He never fully recovered from the effects of that crash, and was plagued by dizziness and headaches the rest of his career. In all, he was injured 11 times by running into fences. Partly as a result of his injuries, he retired as a player in 1952. He coached for the Dodgers after they had moved to Los Angeles, and later for the Cubs. His career batting average was .295 in 861 games.
yards,” he said. "When they’re stopping the run, that makes it tough. We’ve been successful with it at times and at times, we haven’t been. I think maybe we hung our hat on the run a little too much but that’s hindsight and I’m not gonna second-guess myself.” The Steelers dominated the first half, building a 13-3 lead on David Trout’s two 19-yard field goals and Smith’s catch while Toni Fritsch kicked a 34-yard field goal for the Oilers following Vernon Perry’s interception deep in Pittsburgh territory. It was still a 10-point spread heading into the fourth period when the Oilers suddenly struck for a touchdown on a 52-yard pass player from Stabler to Dave Casper. Casper caught the ball at the Pittsburgh 30, was enveloped by linebackers Jack Ham and Jack

Lambert, then was jettisoned free when safety J.T. Thomas barreled into the trio. On Houston’s next possession, the Steelers forced a fourth-and-three at the Oiler 35. But punter Cliff Parsley’s 31-yard pass to Adger Armstrong revived the Oilers. “Gamble?” said Steelers Coach Chuck Noll. “When they work, I don’t think you can call them gambles.” Four plays later, with 5:43 to go, Fritsch tied it with a 44-yard field goal. Three plays later, offsetting penalties wiped out a 14-yard pass to Smith in the end zone. But Bradshaw, on third and five, scrambled eight yards to the six, then found widereceiver John Stallworth in the left corner of th? end zone. Three plays later, though, safety Ron Johnson intercepted Stabler and four plays after that Harris bulled in from one.

better than Garo.” Roveto, who was working in one of the tire stores owned by his father and brothers in Atlanta when the Bears gave him a call, will go back to Tampa Bay this week where the Bears will be playing. „ “I hope we beat ’em,” said Roveto. “I don’t care if it’s by 100 points or a field goal just so that we win. If we played like we did against San Diego, we’ll win a lot of games.” Roveto said he was surprised

the Chargers did not call time out, a ploy opponents use on important kicks to put added pressure on the kicker. “It wouldn’t have bothered me,” said Roveto. “They did it to me a lot in college. All it made me do was give me more time to prepare. I guess San Diego figured I’d miss the kick anyway, so why waste the timeout.” Roveto’s kick was good and the Bears had their second victory of the season.
