Barry in 10th year of'Joker's Wild'

By Ruth Thompson “Joker’s Wild” emcee Jack Barry appreciates any fans, but he is especially impressed that retired actor William Powell writes letters to him saying how much he enjoys the syndioai ime show. Jack and his partner, Dan Enright, run Barry & Enright Productions, which produces “Joker’s Wild” and two other top syndicated game shows, “Tic Tac Dough” and “Bullseye.” “The Joker’s Wild” is Jack’s personal pet, because it brought back his TV popularity after the ordeal of the late ’sos game show scandals, when contestants were occasionally slipped answers. “I didn’t know about it at first,” he says. “We had the big money program at the time, ‘Twenty-One,’ so we got the big publicity. The sad thing was that most of the contestants really had expert knowledge and knew the answers. We did pay our price, and since it was a bad practice, I feel badly about it.” “Joker’s Wild” is beginning its tenth year. “Two more and I may retire,” says Jack. “I think I may already be the oldest game show emcee.” Jack, however, never looked better or younger. He is compulsive about golfing and is on the board of directors of the Pritikin Institute, although he admits that he can’t always follow a strict diet. Jack has a new game show in development “a quiz about a quiz, and that’s all I can say” and has invested in cable systems. There may be some more Barrys in the industry soon. Jack’s daughter and one of his sons majored in television in college. “They’re coming into the business,” says the proud papa.

Jack Barry *** You can’t blame people in show biz for wanting to be judged on their talents and not their personal alliances. In that case, they could take lessons from the official ABC biography of Andrew Stevens, who stars in the forthcoming “Code Red” series. He started winning drama and speech competitions when he was a Memphis high school student. That was on merit and not because his mother is actress Stella Stevens. He eventually won leading man status in two mini-series, “The Bastard” and “The Rebels.” *** Michael Goodwin, who appears on Robert Stack’s new ABC series “Strike Force,” commutes to the studio from Venice, Calif., the city that has been dubbed a roller skating haven. But that’s not the reason he moved there. “I like the low rental on my house,” he says. “The closest I get to the sport is looking out my windows as the skaters crash and knock each other down. You see, I’m from Seattle. If I’m going to risk my neck, it’ll be on mountainclimbing and skiing ”
