Dallas trying to end Miami's streak
c. 1981 N. Y. Times News Service NEW YORK The Miami Dolphins play the Cowboys at Dallas Sunday in a significant game between teams that have always done well in such interconference matches. The Dolphins, since 1970, have won 85 percent of their games against National Conference teams and that includes two Super Bowl victories. The Cowboys’ record against American Conference teams is 28-11, including two victories and three losses in Super Bowl games. Only the Oakland Raiders, 31-9-1, and the Dolphins, 33-6, have had better interconference results. Miami last lost to an NFC opponent, Philadelphia, in 1978. The AFC, which has led the NFC in interconference victories every year since 1973, is ahead again this season, 11-7, after seven weeks. The Dallas-Miami contest finds the Dolphins leading their division by 1V 2 games over Buffalo, while the Cowboys trail the Eagles by a game one week in advance of their match in Philadelphia. Previews of all games follow with records in parentheses. ( Betting lines are from Harrah’s Reno Race and Sports Book.) AMERICAN CONFERENCE Seattle (1-6) at Jets (3-3-1) The Jets’ Richard Todd and Seattle’s Jim Zorn have similar passing figures except Todd’s touchdown pass-interception ratio is 14-6 to Zorn’s 5-6. The Seahawk quarterback is operating without a rushing attack and with little help from his defense. Betting line: Jets by 9'/ 2 . Denver (5-2) at Buffalo (4-3) Joe Cribbs will be the key player in this important game. If he can run against the league’s No.l defense, the Bills will establish control. Steve Watson, the Bronco wide receiver and free agent from Temple, has made 31 receptions, 9 for touchdowns, while Craig Morton is the topranked NFL passer. Betting line: Buffalo by 4‘/2. Kansas City (5-2) at Oakland — The Chiefs shut out

Faust's Irish need to beat USC
By KEN RAPPOPORT AP Sports Writer Gerry Faust has gotten off on the wrong foot at Notre Dame, but this weekend hopes to kick the losing habit. “I can’t think of anything we could use more right now than a win over a team the caliber of Southern Cal,” says the rookie Irish coach. Renewal of the fabled crosscountry college football rivalry Saturday at South Bend doesn’t have the glamour of past seasons, owing to Notre Dame’s poor 2-3 start. But Southern Cal Coach John Robinson is looking beyond the records, as you usually do in a Notre DameUSC game. “Notre Dame will have an advantage because of being off last week,” says Robinson, whose team is ranked N 0.5 in the country with a 5-1 record. “It gives them more time to prepare for this game and a chance to heal their injuries.
remind the two though that Saturday's opponent is Olivet Nazarene and the host will be playing at home for the first time in a while, so the Tigers can't overlook them (Banner-Graphic photo by Steve Fields).
One of our problems has been preparing for the different teams. One week we have to get ready for a wishbone team (Oklahoma), another for a passing team (Stanford) and now for a power team.” Faust was expected to do better than he has so far. He came to Notre Dame this season with a national reputation and nothing but winning records at Moeller High School in Cincinnati. A positive thinker, Notre Dame’s slow start and the prospect of facing one of the nation’s top runners in Marcus Allen Saturday has Faust thinking negatively these days. “I don’t know how we’re going to stop him,” says Faust. “Nobody has done it yet.” Allen, latest in the line of a long string of great tailbacks at Southern Cal, has averaged 215 yards a game this season and had a streak of five 200-yard games before last week’s 153 yards against Stanford. The Southern Cal-Notre Dame game isn’t the only traditional game on tap for Saturday. Elsewhere, it’s topranked Penn State against West

Oakland, 27-0, two weeks ago and the Raiders have made four position changes since, the most significant being Marc Wilson for Jim Plunkett at quarterback. Wilson was fair-to-good in his first start. Joe Delaney, the Chiefs’ rookie running back, is averaging 5.1 yards a carry. Betting line: Oakland by 2V2. Houston (4-3) at Pittsburgh (4-3) Both lost last Sunday by a combined score of 17-72. But it is Terry Bradshaw against Ken Stabler once more, with Bradshaw aging more gracefully. Betting line: Pittsburgh by 5. Baltimore (1-6) at Cleveland (3-4) The Colts’ defense is giving up 414 yards a game. Dave Logan, the Browns’ best receiver, is returning from injury and that will help the sagging offense. Betting line: Cleveland by 7. NATIONAL CONFERENCE Giants (4-3) at Atlanta (4-3) The Giants’ victories were over teams that have lost 23 of 28 games. They can expect difficulty in running against the fine Falcon defense and in turn trying to stop the running of William Andrews. Then there are Steve Bartkowski’s passes to Alfred Jenkins, who averages almost 20 yards a reception. Betting line: Atlanta by BV2 points. Los Angeles (4-3) at San Francisco (5-2) The Rams have beaten the 49ers nine times in a row and last lost at San Francisco in 1966. But times have changed. Jack Reynolds, the exRam; Fred Dean, the former Charger, and Lawrence Fillers, a one-time Jet, have helped to make the 49er defense solid. The Rams need fewer dropped passes, stronger pass defense. Betting line: San Francisco by 1. Tampa Bay (4-3) at Philadelphia (6-1) The last time they played, in a divisional playoff game in 1979, Tampa won handily. The Eagles have improved since then, but not the Buccaneers. Betting line. Philadelphia by 9. Green Bay (2-5) at Detroit (3-4) Billy Sims expects to be ready after missing a game and the Lions will go again with Ed
Virginia; No. 2 Pitt vs. Syracuse and South Carolina against No. 3 North Carolina in some of the day’s other top games Also, it’ll be North Carolina State at No. 4 Clemson; Minnesota at No. 6 Iowa; Kentucky at No. 7 Georgia; No. 10 Texas at No. 8 Southern Methodist; No. 9 Mississippi State at Auburn; Rutgers at No. 11 Alabama; Houston at No. 12 Arkansas; No. 13 Brigham Young at Wyoming; Colorado at No. 14 lowa State; No. 15 Nebraska at No. 19 Missouri; No. 16 Washington State at Arizona; No. 17 Arizona State at Stanford; Northwestern at No. 18 Michigan and No. 20 Florida State at Louisiana State. West Virginia begins the killer portion of Penn State’s schedule, which includes Miami (Fla.), North Carolina State, Alabama, Notre Dame and Pitt. “The schedule for the next six games is as difficult a schedule as any college team ever faced,” said Penn State Coach Joe Paterno. Penn State, 5-0 this season to West Virginia’s 5-1, has beaten
lowa may lead inßigTen, but race is far from over
By JOE MOOSHIL AP Sports Writer lowa’s sixth-ranked Hawkeyes, one of the new kids on the block causing a stir and excitement in the Big Ten football race, risk their Big Ten lead Saturday against old rival Minnesota. lowa has a 3-0 record in the Big Ten and is a step ahead of Wisconsin which holds second place with a 3-1 record while Ohio State is third with a 2-1 mark. Everyone else has at least two losses, and in the past that usually has been reason enough to eliminate a team from title consideration. But since Ohio State and Michigan, 2-2, aren’t making a runaway, two-team affair of the
the Mountaineers 22 times in a row. In Pitt, Syracuse will be facing the No. 2 team for the second week in a row. Penn State was second in the rankings last week, but moved up to No. 1 after top-ranked Texas was beaten by Arkansas. The Orangemen, suffering through a 1-4-1 season, must contend with one of the nation’s highest-powered offenses steered by quarterback Dan Marino, who owns several school offensive records. “We’re playing against a great football team,” said Syracuse Coach Dick McPherson. “He (Jackie Sherrill) has those kids playing football the way I would like our team to play. Those guys are out there running around knocking the living daylights out of people. They play with such enthusiasm.” The Panthers, 5-0 this season, have the nation’s stingiest defensive unit. They have allowed the opposition an average of only 186.8 yards a
Kobman just as zany as an IU linebacker
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Randy Kobman, Indiana University’s freshman linebacker, admits he does zany things, like almost falling out of the upper deck at Riverfront Stadium chasing a foul baseball. Shown a photograph of Kobman hanging onto the upper deck facade at the Cincinnati Reds’ park, Indiana Coach Lee Corso liked what he saw. “Can you imagine a kid quick enough to grab the railing and strong enough to haul himself back up? ” Corso asked. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Kobman has proven Corso's early assessment correct. As a freshman, the product of West

Hippie at quarterback. He had four scoring passes in his first start. Even with John Jefferson and James Lofton in the lineup the Packers have scored only 13 points in their last two games. Betting line: Detroit by 6. Minnesota (5-2) at St Louis (2-5) Ted Brown, the Vikings’ uncelebrated halfback, has gained more yards rushing and receiving than the Cardinals’ renowned Ottis Anderson. The impressive Vikings will be after their sixth straight victory. The Cards, thin on linebackers, may start two rookies. Betting line: Minnesota by 2. INTERCONFERENCE Miami (5-1-1) at Dallas (5-2) The Cowboy offense should work well with Tony Dorsett running effectively inside and Danny White hitting the deep passes on post patterns. David Woodley, the gutty Dolphin quarterback, meets the Dallas defense for the first time. Betting line: Dallas by 6. Chicago (1-6) at San Diego (5-2) The Bears will not have the ball very often because the Chargers lead the league in points scored, total yards gained, and yards by passing. Their defense, however, is No.l in passing yards given up and No. 2 in overall yards allowed. Betting line: San Diego by 9. Cincinnati (5-2) at New Orleans (1-6) The Bengals owe much of their surprising success to their veteran quarterback, Ken Anderson, and a suddenly staunch defense. Anderson has been passing for 260 yards a game and has 12 scoring passes to only four interceptions. After this the Saints play the Falcons, Rams and Vikings. Betting line: Cincinnati by 6. New England (2-5) at Washington (1-6) The Redskins have John Riggins and Joe Washington, both healthy at last, to play running back and Terry Metcalf moves to wide receiver. The Patriots will be without Mike Haynes, their all-pro cornerback. Both teams are better than what their records maj suggest. Betting line: New England by 3.
race, coaches are taking another look at their chances. "Our position is better than it was two weeks ago,” said Coach Jim Young whose Purdue Boilermakers are 2-2 along with Minnesota, Illinois and Indiana. “But lowa is in an excellent position and the fact that they play one less conference game than most of the others appears to be in their favor.” lowa Coach Hayden Fry is jubilant over the Hawkeyes’ standing but not all that confident. “I feel that if such good teams as Notre Dame, Southern Cal, Texas and Michigan have had their bubbles burst, it can also happen to lowa,” said Fry. “Others who know how to hndle being in the top 10 haven’t been
game. Nebraska doesn’t figure to try anything fancy against Missouri. “They run just a few things, but they do them well,” said Missouri linebacker Van Darkow. “Like most good teams, they’ll line up and bring it at you.” After losing to lowa and Penn State earlier in the year, Nebraska is making a strong comeback. The Cornhuskers have since beaten Auburn, Colorado and Kansas State. “It looks like they are regaining their usual form,” said Missouri Coach Warren Powers. “They seem to be settled offensively and defensively and are playing great football.” With quarterback Jim McMahon back in action after missing two weeks with an injured knee, BYU bounced back from a loss to Nevada-Las Vegas with a victory over San Diego State last week. The Cougars have won nine of the last 11 games with Wyoming.
Chester, Ohio, has worked up to a No. 2 linebacking job for the Hoosiers, who play Big Ten football at Ohio State Saturday. Kobman is nursing a pinched nerve, but insists he should be ready for the Buckeyes. “The whole left side of my body is tingling,” he said. "I like playing with it it burns but I can only go so far. until it gets numb.” Kobman likes the physicality of operating at the key defensive position, saying by telephone, “I like to see peoples' eyes when they get real close. I like the contact. It feels good on my head when 1 hit them. It gets rid of head^es.”
able to do it. One of these days we’re going to find a great big hole in our inner tube.” Minnesota will try to puncture that tube Saturday in a game to be televised throughout half of the nation. “We’re a better team than we were last year,” said Minnesota Coach Joe Salem, “but we’ve lost two games to people we beat last year. This is a healthy rivalry. We don’t have a team in our state as a rival. So lowa becomes a natural rival.” Wisconsin has to prove the Badgers can win away from home. Their only conference loss came last week at Michigan State in their first road game of the season. The Badgers had better get their pass defense in order, because Illinois Coach Mike White has abandoned trying to find a running game. “I’m not interested in how balanced our offense is any more,” said White. “We have to do what we have to, and if that means throwing on every down, then that’s what we’ll do.” Legal Notices CITY OF GREENCASTLE.
