Sanders is more than Les Nessman
LOS ANGELES (AP)~ Richard Sanders is discussing Les Nessman, but looking most unlike the journalistic nebbish he plays on television. The spectacles worn by Nessman on CBS’s ‘WKRP in Cincinnati” are replaced by stylish plastic glasses. The bow tie is absent, as is the everpresent bandage. Nowhere to be seen is Nessman’s coveted Silver Sow Award. ALTHOUGH Sanders talks freely, he reveals little about himself. He also practices a sort of private guerrilla theater, occasionally slipping into other identities to put people on. Once he and some actor friends visited a tough Chicago bar as Frenchmen. (They were tossed out.) Or he might assume a tough-guy role to attend a party. And he has sung rock ‘n’ roll in nightclubs in the the guise of Nessman. ‘‘Les was bitterly disappointed he didn’t get to take over for Walter Cronkite,” Sanders says. “I think now he’d love to be President Reagan’s press secretary. He always picks jobs he’s totally unqualified for.” Radio journalist Nessman is an incompetent with exaggerated notions of his own importance. He proclaims he’s Cincinnati’s “window to the world,” but what he reports is the hog futures. “I HAD NOBODY in mind when I created Les Nessman,” Sanders says, “but now I run into him everywhere I go. Every radio disc jockey thinks he’s just down the hall.” Nessman did not spring full grown from the brow of Sanders or of Hugh Wilson, producer and creater of “WKRP.” Instead, he has grown steadily in the three years the show has been on the air. “All the characters were well-developed in the pilot,” Sanders says. “You could tell where they were coming from and where they were going. They were human beings. I said, ‘Here’s a person I know pretty much what he’s up to.’” ALL OF THE ACTORS on

“WKRP” enjoy a lot of input, and Sanders enjoys more than most because he and his partner, Michael Fairman, have written four scripts. The Silver Sow Award, as strongly identified with Nessman as his imaginary office, came as the result of a script they wrote. Sanders says, “We needed an excuse for him to have to ask Jennifer fLoni Anderson) for a date. Les tries to change his whole personality, and instead she prefers him as he is. That’s why she’s willing to go with him to this event, and we thought, ‘Gee, what should the event be? The Silver Sow Award. That’s how it was born, and it seems to have tickled the fancy of hog producers across the country.” Like Nessman, Sanders used to ride a motor scooter around town. In fact, he would have gone to the audition on it had it not rained that day. Sanders concedes that some of Nessman is dredged from his own depths. He says, “It’s a filtering process. You use some things, some things that are really subconscious.” SANDERS WAS born in Harrisburg, Pa., but grew up around the world, wherever his father, a U.S. Army officer, was stationed. After extensive stage and repertory experience, he moved into television. “WHEN I TRAVEL now,” he says, “I visit theaters. I see theater in Italy or France or Argentina. I want to see how they do ‘Man of La Mancha’ in Argentina as opposed to New York, even though I can’t understand the language. I guess it’s a busman’s holiday. “I’ve done a lot of Irish. I was an Irish Republican Army terrorist on ‘McCloud.’ On stage, I played in ‘The Boss,’ and ‘Travesties’ I was James Joyce. On ‘The Rockford Files’ I was a bureaucrat. I played a lot of terrorists and priests. I worked for the German army in several shows. I played a journalist in the mini-series ‘lke.’ I was a very evil man in ‘Roots II.’”
