Deal* Abby : Unbridled tears no sweat at her own wedding
DEAR ABBY: What do you think of brides who come down the aisle crying at their own wedding? Or doesn’t it ever happen? I am a 20-year-old college girl and I’ll probably be getting married within the next two years. I cry "at the drop of a hat,’’ as my parents say. I cry at sad movies and I cry when I hear a nostalgic song. I even cried when I found a picture of my boyfriend’s old girlfriend in his Bible. My boyfriend’s sister had a pet raccoon that I saw maybe twice. The thing got hit in the jaw by a car and died. As they were looking it over and talking • about skinning it to save the hide, I started to cry like a baby. Anything can set me off. I am so afraid I will cry rivers at my own wedding. What do vou make of this? CRYBABY DEAR CRYBABY: So you cry easily. It’s no crime to give in to your emotions such sensitivity these days is refreshing. You have a fortune in liquid * assets. Don’t knock it. ♦ * * t DEAR ABBY: 1 have searched for help for years with no % success. I am a "pederast.” (I like young boys.) I cannot tell

you how difficult it is for me to even write those words. For people who read about child molestation, every individual who has sex with a child ranks among the most evil deviates of our society. Perhaps the act is, but often it is performed by an otherwise responsible, well-adjusted man. I consider myself such a man. Nothing could be further from my mind than wanting to hurt a child. In fact, my greatest joy is working with children, and my success in dealing with them has been remarkable. My point in writing is to try to locate someone who is doing research in this area. I know I could make an important contribution toward a serious study. I will freely work with any qualified group or individual. I have been to therapists, but they know less than I about this compulsion I have. I have the problem under control, but the desire still rages within me, and I would like to eliminate it if possible. I know there must be thousands of men like me who are active and would like to overcome this urge, but there is simply nowhere to go for help. There are many good men in prison who could also contribute to society if this problem could be solved. Please answer me in a “confidential.” I cannot take any chances of being identified. There are many of us who desperately need your help. JEKYLL AND HYDE

DEAR JEKYLL: I am publishing your letter, and if I hear from any qualified researchers who want to work with you I will let you know. Please send me your name and address. You can trust me. * * * DEAR ABBY: I didn’t marry until I was 38. The two hardest aspects of being married were asking for money and getting used to smoke in the bedroom. (I have never smoked, but I never complained about his smoking because I knew he smoked when I married him.) Now after 20 years of marriage, he has taken up cigar smoking, knowing that I detest cigars and the odor nauseates me. How can I convince him that he is being inconsiderate in addition to contaminating my air? CHOKING IN CHICAGO DEAR CHOKING: He knows he’s being inconsiderate the problem is, he doesn’t care. I can’t make him “care,” but I can assure you that most people get about as much consideration as they demand. * * * DEAR ABBY: After 17 years of marriage, my husband passed away at age 41. He suffered from cancer for 13
months and died at home. I was left with four sons to raisK' His co-workers gave a gift of money to my husband sister, with instructions for her to outfit the children with -• clothes for school this fall. I really think it was cruel of them to give my sister-in-law ’ the money and leave me out. I would have enjoyed shopping ; for my children’s school clothes. I can’t understand they wanted to hurt me that way after all I’ve been through. Now that all the clothes are bought, should I send my own 2 money back to them? 2 VERY HURTDEAR HURT: I’m sure your husband’s co-workers 2 did not mean to hurt you. Knowing how much you had been through caring for your beloved during his long illness, they thought it would be a kindness to relieveyou of the chore of shopping for your children’s 2 school clothes. Thank them for their kindness, for a kindness it was. Good luck and God bless. * * * CONFIDENTIAL TO F. IN RED OAK, IOWA: Progress involves risks. As F. B. House Call Drug can cause hair growth, too
By G. Timothy Johnson, M.D. Question: Would you please comment on the blood pressure drug that apparently can also cause hair growth? I have heard about this from several friends, but have not been able to find any exact information. Answer: The drug you are referring to is Minoxidil. It has been used for several years (by mouth) to control severe forms of high blood pressure. It has also long been known that Minoxidil will often cause excessive growth of body hair. Within the past several years some dermatologists have experimented with the application of this drug, in lotion form, to the scalp in an attempt to treat various forms of baldness. The August, 1981, issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology reports this treatment on three women who had developed general baldness - so-called alopecia areata. Two of the women responded with some hair growth after four to six weeks of twice-a-day applications of Minoxidil lotion. The third woman did not respond. A lot more investigation is necessary before it can be concluded that the lotion is useful in various types of baldness. However, there obviously is interest in the possibility. If it continues to show promise, I’m sure we will hear more about it. Question: Is the number of teenage pregnancies increasing or decreasing? Answer: The number of
Creation of film commission eyed
JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (AP) State Rep. Richard Wathen, R-Jeffersonville, wants Indiana to be in the movies, and he hopes the Legislature will do something about it. Noting the success of the 1979 Academy Award winner “Breaking Away,” filmed in Bloomington, Wathen says he will introduce a bill in the Legislature’s 1982 session to create a state film commission. It would encourage studio representatives and filmmakers to use Indiana locations in their films - and bring royalty fees to the state. “The royalty revenue would be deposited to the general fund. We need all the help we can get,” he says. Wathen says the money filmmakers would spend on location and the resulting bulge in tourism would boost Indiana’s economy. “How much we could generate depends on luck, climate and the ability of the people on the commission,” he said. The September issue of State Government News indicates other states have the same idea. Thirty states currently have agencies similar to the one Wathen is proposing. Even though it’s been three years since the Academy Award winning film “Breaking Away” was released, Bloomington officials say they’re still reaping fame and tourism. The 1979 movie featured an annual event in Bloomington,
pregnancies in teenagers is Increasing. However, the number of births is decreasing because of the higher number of abortions among teenagers. The more important question, of course, is what can we do .to prevent these tragedies. I personally believe that educationin schools, churches and in the home - is the most important factor in preventing unwanted pregnancies. A recent survey indicated that half of all pregnant teenage girls erroneously believed that they were not capable of becoming pregnant. Whatever else it might do, education ought to dispel that myth. Question: Have you heard that waterbeds might possibly be dangerous to the heart? If so, would you tell me about it? Answer: The April 9, 1981, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine contains a note about cold water temperatures in waterbeds as a possible cause of angina - heart pain We know, of course, that exposure to cold of any kind can cause pain in those with heart disease. Consequently, it -js possible that cold from a waterbed might do the same. Dr. Johnson welcomes questions from readers. While he cannot reply to all of them individually, he will answer those of general interest in his column. Write to Dr. Johnson in care of this newspaper. (c)1981 by The Chicago Tribune-New York
Indiana University’s Little 500 bicycle race. “We still get calls fairly often” from people who have seen the movie, says Bonnie Lavender of the Bloomington Chamber of Commerce. Chamber officials estimate that 20th Century Fox spent about 60 percent of the movie's $2.5 million budget with local businesses. She said the $1.5 million the studio spent on food, transportation, car rentals, salaries for extras and other items may have generated as much as $5 million in business within that year. About 2,500 Bloomington residents, including IU students, worked as extras in the movie. The IU Foundation, which sponsors the bicycle race, received a $15,000 gift from Fox in return for its help with the movie. Within two years of the premier of the film in Bloominton, the foundation raised $1.2 million to build a new stadium for the bike race. Wathen is proposing a 20member film commission, which would include the lieutenant governor and the state’s director of tourism, with 18 commissioners appointed by the governor. It would “wage an aggressive promotional and informational effort” to draw filmmakers, develop a close working relationship with film industry representatives, co-ordinate onlocation activities, and serve $s a liason during film research and production, Wathen said.
