Cloverdale convincing sectional champ
By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Cloverdale outscored Van Buren 19-2 during a five-minute stretch of the fourth quarter Saturday night to dethrone the Blue Devils 78-51 and win the Greencastle--IHSAA basketball sectional title in McAnallv Center. The first Cloverdale sectional title since 1973. and the first by a Putnam County team since 1977. puts the Clovers in the opening game of the Terre Haute regional Saturday at Hulman Civic Center against Bloomfield, winner of the Switz City sectional "THEY WERE LOOSE, emotionally prepared, mentally prepared and hungrier than Van Buren.” Clover coach A 1 Tucker said after his fifth sectional crown in 14 seasons at the helm “We played well Overall, we played very well.” Van Buren coach John Memmer pointed to Cloverdale's balanced attack as the key. “Their entire team, that one stretch there. I think they hit something like 10 out of 11 shots and that kind of sealed our fate." Memmer said. “Their entire team shot an excellent percentage and we had a stretch there it seemed like we couldn’t even find the basket.” Cloverdale shot 57 per cent (29-51) for the game and hit 8 of 13 in the final quarter to Van Buren’s 2of 11. The Blue Devils shot only 32 per cent (17-52) for the game, never getting into their running or pressing game against the Clover shooting and 27-22 rebounding advantage. “CLOVERDALE has an excellent ball club and the way they played tonight they would probably just bypass Terre Haute and just go straight to Evansville (site of the semi-state).” Memmer praised. "There is no shame in the way we played. We lost to an excellent ball club.” Cloverdale broke open a fairly tight ball game in the final quarter by going to its spread offense that uses the entire half of the court. The Clovers were up 34-25 at halftime and led by 14 points through most of the third quarter. After two Tim Sullivan free throws just 35 seconds into the last eight minutes, Cloverdale took off and never looked back. Before the cluster of Clover fans decended upon the floor in celebration eight

TERRE HAUTE-Pat Rady’s first Terre Haute South team continued the sectional championship tradition Saturday night, defeating tournament surprise Dugger-Union 94-54 in the title contest at Terre Haute South. South took a 17-4 first quarter lead and held a 41-20 halftime advantage and despite what coach Rady called “super coaching” by Union’s Joe Hart. After three quarters the Braves led 64-36. Dave Conrady led South with 22 points and Tony Erdly topped Dugger with 16. It marks the fourth

Cloverdale players had scored in the last period, led by Jim Price’s eight points. ' CLOVERDALE WON THE tournament with a balanced attack. Price paced the winners with 14, followed by Chad Tucker with 16, Tony Hacker with 13 and Jerry Neese with 12. The end was a complete contrast to the beginning. Clovers 23-2 sectional and conference champions
Tucker said in reference to the semifinal victory over Rockville. “I felt we could go at them man-to-man and I felt we could control every position. But, those fouls can be a difficult situation, and I didn’t want to get into foul trouble in the first half .” The plan almost didn’t work. Van Buren didn’t score against the zone, but the Clovers had five team fouls just 2M> minutes into the contest. Van Buren forged a 7-4 lead with five free throws and a Mark Chamberlain field goal. TONY HACKER PUT an offensive
Things get hoppin' when things get Clover green
By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor A 1 Tucker must have a green thumb. Actually it’s green with a yellow nail. This has got to be considered one of the best jobs in his 14 years of leading the Clovers. When the season started he wouldn’t predict Cloverdale winning more than say 14 games. THE HOLDER OF 204 VARSITY career coach victories. Tucker was faced with putting two sophomores in the starting lineup and could only hope veteran Jim Dean would heal up from a football knee injury. Two players Tucker was counting on didn’t come out, and then Tony Hacker and Mark McCammon were absent, by Hacker’s admission, from the opening practice after football season ended. “I knew there was going to have to be an awful lot of maturing with this ball club because of the number of rookies we were going to go with,” Tucker said. “But basically they’re pretty level-headed kids, they think pretty well, they’re good students, good citizens and they just did a good job.” The “rookies” were Jerry Neese and the coach’s son, Chad. Neese scored 12 points in the championship game and has been the Clover quarterback, number two scorer (14.8) and assist leader all season. Tucker, who lets his playing speak for itself, scored 16 points and average 10 points a game this year. WERE THE TWO SOPHOMORES nervous going into the championship game? “Before the game, yes,” Tucker said during the post-game celebration at McAnally Center. “But after the opening tipoff it was just another game,” Neese added. “Just another game” might have been the difference for Cloverdale. As Coach Tucker said before the sectional, this bunch is a pretty unemotional team. They don’t really get up with a lot of rah, rah stuff. They play steady. Van Buren came out fired up and still only scored on free throws. DEAN SHOWED EVERYONE in the final 90 seconds Saturday night that his knee is completely healed. Dean dribbled three-quarters of the length of the floor, then pulled up to sink his only two points of the night. Billy, I didn’t forget you. Chestnut, the guy I call the team radical, scored 19 points in the semifinal victory and eight points in the title game. “I just tried to do what I could,” Billy said without offering to buy me a coke which is his customary greeting. “That’s your last chance, you haven’t got another chance after the sectional if you lose.” Price was his normally brilliant self. Only a junior the 6-4 forward scored 22 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. Just think, he could get even BIGGER! If anyone looked at that busted lip he suffered in the Rockville game they would have thought Jim was in a boxing match. HACKER HAS NEVER played better. Coach Tucker said before the season that Tony was showing signs of more dedication and working harder. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to play basketball this season, but of course it turned out to be his best, averaging 11 points. Dave Whitaker, Don Trumbo and Brent Jones normally don’t see a great deal of playing time, but they have never lacked for hustle or attitude. Don must have watched Price’s ball handling because the junior did a little behind-the-back act of his own. Troy Craig and Dan Samuels joined the varsity for the tournament after playing JV all season. Craig even scored on a 17footer. As Jimmy Dean said, “When everything is going your way, you might as well go for it.” ACCORDING TO A RELIABLE source, who shall remain nameless, although he does have a nephew starting in the
rebound back in to cut the gap to 7-6 and a Jerry Neese bucket at 2:17 off a Billy Chestnut steal put Cloverdale ahead to stay. Van Buren tried pressing sophomore starters Tucker and Neese more on the perimeter during the early going of the second quarter. The idea gave Cloverdale the opportunity to build a seven-point lead when center Hacker and forward Price found themselves open for eight-foot jumpers. “Mainly it was just there,” the coach’s

Cloverdale backcourt and a son starting guard for Wabash College. Joan Tucker must have been nervous before watching her husband and son in the championship game. Mrs. Tucker tried to get into McAnally Center with an appointment card instead of a ticket. Joan is loving every minute of this season. “I love it. I could stand it right on through March if I have to,” she said. There appears to be quite a reunion lined up for the Hulman Civic Center regional. Cloverdale meets Bloomfield in the opening game. Bloomfield coach Steve Brett and former Clover basketball stars Joe Williams and Rod Hervey were teammates at Indiana State University. TERRE HAUTE SOUTH plays Brazil in the second game. South coach Pat Rady is a Roachdale native and coached the Bainbridge High School power team of the mid-60’s that were led by Larry Steele. Rady’s wife Margaret is a 1960 graduate of Cloverdale High School and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Gladys Huber, still lives in Cloverdale. Brazil coach Jim Buell started his career as an assistant coach for A 1 Tucker at Cloverdale before going on to Staunton and then Brazil. *** I’ve got a bunch of weekend staff writers to thank for some clutch performances this year. David Evens, a 1980 graduate of North Putnam High School and now a freshman at Purdue University, has driven home almost every weekend to work basketball games. Joe Horine, a sophomore at DePauw University, has begged for Cloverdale games all season and it has nothing to do with basketball. He writes about cheerleaders on the side. DePauw University Sports Information Director Pete Shownir got to see some central Indiana high school ball after growing up watching Huntington and then the Muncie teams. Rolf Ricker, a DePauw senior, pulled me out of some pretty tough weekends during the heavy schedule. Tracy Proctor, a 1980 graduate of South Putnam High School, will make it as a photographer if she never does as a coach and teacher. She has taken most of the action shots this season. Tracy and I will see you all in Terre Haute. Braves protest killings WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. son said of getting the ball inside. “They started coming out on us tighter so we just dumped it inside.” THE BLUE DEVILS started getting some penetration on the wings of the Cloverdale defense and closed the gap to 24-21 behind center Dennis Halfhill and forward Mark Chamberlain. Price hit back-to-back 10-footers to make sure the Devils got no closer. A Chestnut steal followed by a Price layup increased the margin to five and another Price field goal made the margin

seven points. Tucker’s 18-foot, two-handed shot gave the Clovers a 34-25 halftime lead. Not only did the Clovers have the lead by nine at halftime, but coach Tucker had what he wanted in the way of fouls. “At halftime I realized we were in good shape (and said), ‘Hey, let’s go after them.’” the coach who hates to see his team play zones said. AFTER BEING WHISTLED for five fouls in the first 3W minutes, the Clovers committed only two more in the half. Although play was ragged in spots by over-hustle, the contest was a physical, but well-played game. Cloverdale committed only nine turnovers and Van Buren 12.
