Supermarket Shopper

Is there limit on all refund offers?

By MARTIN SLOANE Dear Supermarket Shopper--I know that most refund offers are limited to one per family, but does this also apply to the “no form necessary" offers that appear in your column? - -Sherry R.. Little Rock, Ark, Dear Sherry-Approximately 95 percent of the refund offers made today are limited to one per family or address. This rule applies regardless of whether a refund form is required. I do, however, indicate in my listings those offers that you may take advantage of more than once. Dear Supermarket Shopper-Last week I received a $2 refund on spaghetti sauce. Today I- received a second $2 check from the same company. This must have been a mistake because I am very careful to send for only one refund when the offer so specifies. My conscience won’t allow me to cash the second check, so I am wondering what to do with it. Should I just tear it up?-Charlotte, Cincinnati. Dear Charlotte-I would send the duplicate check to the president of the company along with a note thanking him or her for the opportunity to save money with the company’s refund offers. Just address your letter to the “Office of the President” at the address shown on the product package. Dear Supermarket Shopper-When I started refunding a few months ago, I began to save all my proofs of purchase on national brands. After a while I got a little discouraged because so few of them were getting used. But the big day finally came! I already had rice on my shopping list. Then, when I saw the $6 refund offer on the Uncle Ben’s box, the rice practically jumped into my shopping cart by itself. This was a $5 refund offer for 12 proofs with an additional dollar if mailed before Dec. 31, 1980.1 hurried home and found 11 proofs in my file. The 12th was on the box I had just bought. My early-bird refund request was in the mail the next day. This was the easiest s6l ever ear-ned.-Mary G., Baton Rouge, La. Dear Mary-Thousands of new refunders have enjoyed a similar experience. They start out by saving every possible proof of purchase. As their collections of box tops and labels, they wonder if all their effort will ever pay off. But soon they start to find more refund forms at the supermarket and to trade forms with friends and by mail. Before they know it, they are regularly digging into their proof collections to send for refunds. This is what we call turning trash into cash. Millions of smart shoppers are doing it every da yREFUND OF THE DAY Write to the following address to receive the form required by this $1.50 refund offer: WishBone Italian Family Festival, P.O. box 8446, Clinton, lowa 52732. Vitamins can aid elderly

By G.Timothy Johnson, M.D. Dear Dr. Johnson: You keep telling us that people who eat a reasonably well-balanced diet don’t usually need additional vitamins and minerals. Is this also true for elderly people? -- Margaret P, Phoenix, Ariz. Dear Margaret: If an older person eats a well-balanced diet, there should be little need to take additional vitamins or minerals. It is true, however, that older people tend not to absorb vitamins and minerals as well as younger people do. Unfortunately, too, many older people simply don’t eat well-balanced diets. When they don’t they increase the chances that they’ll need vitamin and mineral supplements. There is also the chance that deficiencies of certain vitamins - such as the B vitamins and folic acid - will contribute to

mental, emotional or intellectual changes in an older person. An insufficiency of these vitamins should always be considered as a possible cause of mental changes. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a sensible, moderate vitamin and mineral supplement to an elderly person. It shouldn’t do any harm, and it might do some good. But don’t overdo it. Dear Dr. Johnson: As I understand it, there seems to be increasing danger that plague may break out in this country. I find that hard to believe. I’ve always thought of the plague in association with the Middle Ages, and assumed it has been conquered. Is this really something we should worry about? - Kelly 8., Monrovia, Calif. Dear Kelly: Recent figures

3S> Pass 4<? Opening lead king of diamonds. How do you guess which way to finesse for a queen when the finesse can be taken in either direction? There are players who enjoy solving such problems, but most mortals don’t relish them at all. Take this case where declarer can make four hearts by playing West for the queen of trumps. He simply finesses against West and winds up losing two diamonds and a club. But if he elects to finesse against East, he goes down one. Oddly enough, the best

released by the U.S. Center for Disease Control in Atlanta show there have been 15 confirmed cases of plague in the United States so far this year. Four of these 15 plague victims died of the disease. But such small numbers aren’t cause for general alarm. Still, plague is a disease we must consider when we’re trying to diagnose an ailment whose symptoms include high fever, muscular pains, lymph node enlargement, lung infection, etc. This is particulary true if the patient lives in the western third of the United States, where all plague cases have occurred so far. Plague is a disease caused by one type of bacteria, Yersinia pestis. It is harbored in rodents and transmitted to humans by fleas.

way of dealing with the problem is not to finesse at all. The problem can be resolved by circumventing it! Let’s say East-West start out with three rounds of diamonds. Declarer ruffs and, since a club must be lost in any case, he concentrates all his energies on avoiding a trump loser. Instead of trying to guess the likely location of the queen a 50-50 proposition South directs his attention to other channels. He cashes three spades, discarding a club from dummy, then plays the A-K of clubs, ending in dummy. With five tricks to go and having

Worry Clinic

By George W. Crane, Ph.D., M.D. Heed Dr. Arthur. In 1955, the FDA head said there is nothing of medical value in the sea! Now medical journals admit over 22 of the 44 soluble sea chemicals are VITAL to health! CASE X-603: Dr. Arthur, aged 42, is president of his county dental society. “Dr. Crane,” he said, “I have been interested in your stress on the biochemists view about the possible health values of the 44 ocean water chemicals. “But I never did anything about it till I began to have arthritis in my right arm, which hampers me in holding the dental drill. “So my wife and I visited friends in Florida over Christmas and I put 10 gallons of Atlantic water in the trunk of our car to bring back up north. “But how do I treat the water to make it potable? Will boiling it 15 minutes sterilize it sufficiently? “Is there a shelf life for it or does it deteriorate quickly? “What is the proper dosage when used as a preventive? And if a person has arthritis, cancer or other supposedly deficiency ailments? “Are there any contraindications, as for people on a low salt diet? “I’m ready to start using it, for several of our local dentists swear by it. And a local eye specialist tells me he uses a 1% solution of sea water as eye drops to help retard cataracts.” OCEAN MEDICINE Here are answers to Dr. Arthur’s queries: (1) Boil the whole sea water for 15 minutes to sterilize it and strain it through cloth to filter out any observable bits of wood, etc. (2) Its 44 chemicals are inorganic and thus do not deteriorate nor are they harmed by boiling. (3) Most people take a tablespoonful of the whole water in a glass of milk, tomato juice, orange juice, soup or just diluted in tap water, as a possible preventive of deficiency ailments. Those with arthritis, cataracts, cancer, asthma and the dozen or more other deficiency ailments use as much as a full glass (8 oz.) of whole water daily. By “whole water”, we mean just as it comes from the ocean, not boiled down for economy in shipping. (4) The most recent specialists in heart of high blood pressure patients, are viewing askance the former medical veto of salt. Even in a tablespoon of whole ocean water, the salt content is relatively slight. If you ingest too much sea water daily, it can produce loose stools to the point of diarrhea, so back up on dosage if that occurs. Personally, if I had cancer, I’d take at least 2 full glasses of ocean water daily, for an 85 lb. cancer woman ctank one full glass each 24 hours without diarrhea and I weigh 200 lbs. Several doctors have also written me about almost complete remission of Parkinson’s disease, psoriasis and asthma with this sea water therapy so send for my booklet “The Ocean’s 44 Trace Chemicals”, enclosing a long stamped, return envelope, plus 25 1 . (Always write to Dr. Crane, Hopkins Bldg., Mellott, Indiana 47958, enclosing a long stamped, addressed envelope and 25‘ to cover typing and printing costs when you send lor one oi his booklets.)

lost two tricks to date he still has the A-J-9-6 of hearts and nine of clubs. Declarer now leads the ten of diamonds and ruffs it as East discards a spade. He then plays the nine of clubs. As a result of this method of play, the contract is now secure. It does not matter to declarer which opponent wins the club. He has the A-J-9 of trumps facing the K-10-8, and it is the defender’s turn to lead. The queen is trapped regardless of what happens next. In effect, South makes no direct effort to locate the missing queen. He simply lets nature take its course.
