Purdue and Michigan to test success
v By JOE MOOSHIL AP Sports Writer Michigan's undefeated Wolverines and Purdue’s Boilermakers, a couple of teams responding with remarkable success under new coaches, open the Big Ten basketball race Monday night. Purdue will have the home court advantage, while the other eight teams wait until Thursday night to begin conference play after another season of exceptional success against foes outside the league.
McGinnis isn't only one happy about comeback
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) - George McGinnis is enjoying his second comeback with the Indiana Pacers. "I’m back in the groove This is the happiest I’ve been since I left. It’s great.” McGinnis said 'Sunday night. McGinnis, who rejoined the team last season after almost five years, showed he is fully recovered from a severlv sprained knee when he scored a ,season-high 25 points to lead Indiana to a 113-104 National Basketball Association victory over the New Jersey Nets on Sunday. It was the Nets’ eighth consecutive loss and the 13th in 14 games. McGinnis missed a dozen games earlier this season when he strained the ligaments inside

NEW YORK (AP) - Muhammad Ali, a battered loser in his bid to become heavyweight Champion a fourth time in his last fight, has signed to fight European champion John L. Michigan Coach Bill Frieder, who replaced Johnny Orr, has rolled up an impressive 9-0 record. Purdue’s Boilermakers, under Coach Gene Ready who took over for Lee Rose have posted a 7-2 record, which includes the Gator Bowl Tournament championship. This was expected to be a rebuilding year after the Boilermakers lost Joe Barry Carroll and Arnette Hallman to graduation, but 6-foot-lO freshman Russell Cross has filled in admirably. his right knee during a contest against Atlanta. A painful recuperation followed that proved longer than doctors had predicted. “When you have an injury like that, it’s not just coming back physically but also regaining the mental mechanics you need to play in this league,” McGinnis said. “I’m back to that point now, mentally and physically.” During his injury, McGinnis was replaced by forward George Johnson, who is now on the injured list himself with sprained ankles. Johnson did an adequate job filling McGinnis’ shoes, and that contributed to the 10th year veteran’s woes. “I was playing so well when I got hurt, and then I thought,

He declined to disclose Ali’s purse, but it was believed to be about one-eighth of the $8 million paycheck he picked up when he was stopped after 10 rounds by Larry Holmes, the World Boxing Council cham-

was ranked in the Associated Press preseason poll. Purdue remains unranked, but Michigan has climbed to No. 12 in the latest poll. Once again. Big Ten teams did remarkably well in preconference competition by posting an aggregate 70-21 record. The biggest surprise has been the relatively poor showings of Indiana and Ohio State, the preseason favorites. Indiana was ranked fifth in the opening poll and Ohio State ninth. The Hoosiers have drop-
‘Oh, no, here comes something else’,” McGinnis recalled. “George Johnson was filling in and it was tough for me to get my job back," he said with a wry grin. Coach Jack McKinney said, “A player out with his injury has to think about what is going to happen to him. Will it wash him up?” The coach added that McGinnis, who had his second best game of the season Saturday with 24 points during the Pacers’ 128-104 triumph over San Diego, is back in top form. McGinnis scored five of the Pacers’ final 11 points Sunday during a surge that allowed the Nets just two points. The victory boosted the Pacers’ record to 24-18 and dropped the Nets to 12-
pion, last Oct. 2 at Las Vegas. Smith said he put together the fight only because Ali, who will be 39 Jan. 17, wanted it in the wake of his mismatch loss to Holmes. Ali surrendered his Nevada boxing license Dec. 19 in a letter to the Nevada State Athletic Commission which accepted it under an agreement that Ali not apply again. ped to 15th with a 7-5 record and Ohio State failed to make the top 20 last week because of a 5-3 record. Everybody else in the league has put together better records than the preseason favorites, but both Indiana and Ohio State still figure to be the teams to beat in what should be another exciting race. Minnesota, which probably will be a strong contender, pul together a 9-1 mark and lowa, as expected, rolled up an 8-1 mark while Illinois is off to an-
30. Mike Newlin led the Nets with 25 points. “George is getting better each time out lately,” McKinney said. “Just now, he is reaching his peak and is giving us the old George McGinnis performance and results.” McGinnis, currently averaging 13 points, saw his heyday in 1974-75 during his final season with the Pacers of the American Basketball Association, where he averaged 29.8 points. He was reacquired last Feb. 1 in a trade for Alex English and a first round draft choice. The 30-year-old power forward played college ball at Indiana University.

other fast start at 7-1. The Illini could be for real this time around especially since Coach Lou Henson has come up with a pair of outstanding guar ds in Derek Harper and Craig Tucker. Wisconsin goes into the con ference race with a 6-2 record while Michigan State and Nor thwestern both are 6-3. Michigan, lowa, Illinois and Ohio State all were winners Saturday. Sectional worries S.B. LaSalle coach
By HANK LOWENKRON AP Sports Writer Undefeated South Bend LaSalle has won the South Bend Invitational tournament with a pair of one-point victories in the semifinal and championship game and coach George Giffith admits he’s a little concerned. “The history of the tournament (12 years) is that the team which wins it usually doesn’t win the sectional,” said Griffith. “We’re a perfect example. We’ve won the sectional three out of the last four years, but won the tournament only once in that time.” LaSalle, now 9-0, edged South Bend Riley 41-40 in Saturday’s semifinal as Reggie Bird scored the winning basket with two seconds to play. The Lions then nipped South Bend 51-50 in the title game. “We play the tournament down,” said Griffith. “We took a week off and then held some very low-key practices. We provided very little motivation for victory, but I’ve got to admit I* was a little surprised at how poorly we played in the tournament.” Griffith has produced the perfect start in what was expected to be a rebuilding campaign with only one regular back from a team that was 20-4 last season. “We’re starting five juniors. I did not think we would be 9-0. Our guards had no varsity experience.” Griffith said. “And after the way we played in the tournament I’m glad to say we certainly haven’t peaked. “We were very fortunate to win the tournament. The key to this team, I think, is we have tremendous balance. Our top five are all averaging between 10 and 14 point? per game.” Only six other ranked teams were in action Saturday. No. 2 Anderson Madison Heights climbed to 13-0 as it coasted past Alexandria, 87-60, and No.
points to lead the Wolverines to a 92-56 triumph over Northern Michigan. lowa had seven players in double figures led by Vince Brookins’ 17 points as the Hawkeyes rolled over Wiscon-sin-Eau Claire 86-62. Illinois also used balanced scoring to knock off Southern Illinois-Edwardsville 104-68. Ohio State whipped Bowling Green 88-70 with Herb Williams scoring 21 points and Jim Smith adding a career-high 20.
3 Fort Wayne North bounced back from its first loss of the season to top Muncie South 7456. In the only game matching two rated clubs, No. 15 Vincennes upset No 6 Indianapolis Washington 66-59. No. 7 Andrean got a 27-point performance by Dan Dakich and 23 points from Jim Bullock to defeat Crown Point 86-74. No. 9 Floyd Central’s basketball court was being repaired and officials were forced to call off Saturday’s game with Corydon. Kankakee Valley, No. 18 in the latest Associated Press poll, kept its record unblemished after eight games as it bombed Hanover Central 100-45. Demetrius Buchanan, a 6-foot-1 forward who Griffith says has established himself as a leader, put LaSalle ahead of Clay 50-48 by scoring with seven seconds to play. Kevin Brandy’s free throw with five seconds remaining made it 51-48 and Clay’s Jeff Lee scored the game’s final points at the buzzer. Howard Edwards, the Lions’ 6-2 post man, paced the attack with 15 points and Bird, a 6-2 guard, contributed 13 to the championship effort. Madison Heights was never seriously challenged by Alexandria, leading 19-9 after one period and 44-23 at the half. Three Pirates combined to outscore the entire Alexandria squad. Brad Duncan led the attack with 28, Winston Morgan scored 26 and Stew Robinson finished with 24 for Madison Heights. Fort Wayne North, defeated by No. 20 Fort Wayne South in last week’s opening round of the Summit Athletic Conference tournament, outscored Muncie South 23-7 in the third period. The spurt came after North’s Redskins had built a comfortable 11-point halftime advantage, 31-20.
