80-year-old eyes Senate page duty \ INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - When Indiana’s 103rd General Assembly opens Jan. 7. an 80-year-man will join the teenagers serving as Senate pages. C.J. Patrick Murphy wants to watch his daughter in action. And although the idea sprang from teasing, freshman Sen. Virginia Blankenbaker, R-In-dianapolis, is excited at the prospect of having her father there. ‘‘When she took it upon herself to go campaign, she asked what I wanted and I said I wanted to be a page,” Murphy said. ‘‘l wanted to see these representatives of government who were going to make the laws. “I wasn’t serious. But she thought it was a good idea,” he said. The incoming senator says her father had no idea she would follow through, and once she thought about it, the idea took root. “On opening day, I will have a point of personal privilege and suggest other senators use senior citizens as pages,” Mrs. Blankenbaker said. Murphy, a farmer who founded 4-H clubs in Marion County, says his debut as a page hinges on the weather. Dolores Hood, director of student services, the office that oversees the senate pages, says "usually it’s just school-age children. She wanted him to be her first page.” But Mrs. Hood said she thought Mrs. Blankenbaker’s opening day page assignment was a sweet idea. Senate pages are taken on a tour of the Statehouse, run errands. stuff envelopes and at-, tend part of a session on the floor during their one-day stint, she said. In addition to being granted an excused absence from, school, pages are given a certificate signed by their senator and the lieutenant governor, who presides over the Senate. Last year, there were 2,067 Senate pages. Mrs. Hood said;, 3,084 were scheduled but illness and weather prevented some from serving. Generally. Senate pages are 13 years old. , 4 How do they get to be a page? . “They write to their senator and he (or she) okays it.” she .. said. •.(, “If we had one a day per sen- „ ator then we would just have fifty and it would be great. We've . had days we’ve had more.” , Mrs. Hood said. “We’re never , short of pages." Lions Club organizer dies at 88 FORT WAYNE, Ind.
