There is nothing at all thrilling about making a contract that’s easy to make regardless of how the opponents’ cards are divided. The real thrill in bridge comes when declarer is faced with a situation where the contract seems hopeless because the missing cards are stacked against him and he nevertheless finds a way to make the contract. Lets’s assume declarer ruffs the club lead in dummy, plays a trump to the ace, cashes the ace of diamonds, ruffs another club, and then finesses the jack of diamonds. West wins, shifts to the queen of spades, and South now goes down one. He loses a diamond and three spades. Declarer is unlucky to find West with the queen of diamonds and East with the ace of spades, and may squawk to the high heavens about his bad luck, but he still winds up minus 100 points. However, the fact is that South can make the contract if he plays the hand more cautiously. Instead of relying solely on the 3-to-l odds that either the queen of diamonds or ace of spades is favorably located, he should rely on a different approach to the play that makes the contract foolproof. Declarer should discard a diamond from dummy on the opening club lead! This play has everything to gain and nothing to lose. In the actual case, East wins the club with the ace but is helpless. liet’s say he returns a diamond. South wias with the ace, cashes the ace of trumps and

Worry Clinic

By George W. Crane, Ph.D., M.D. CASE W-696: Kathleen Walsh, aged about 50, is a charismatic college teacher. She is naturally very popular with her classes, for she is dedicated to the task of helping her students solve their social and job dilemmas. “Dr. Crane,” she said recently when she visited at our home, “I am a devout Roman Catholic and have tried to get our Catholic parish here in Chicago to let me develop the same type of in-depth counseling that you do in your daily ‘Worry Clinic’ columns. “For ‘Human Relations’ is my special field of teaching. “And I use several of your newspaper booklets to good effect with my classes, for you stress the practical aspects of psychology. “By contrast many teachers and clergy are so imbued with worship of polysyllables and long words that they talk over the heads of students and parishioners. “Yet when I bring psychology down to earth and show how it helps the students in their social relations and dating, as well as understanding the broader viewpoint of their parents, they become fervent addicts of applied psych ology. “Indeed, one of my greatest joys in teaching is the letters I often receive from my ex-students who tell me that my courses have changed their entire outlook on life. “So wouldn’t it be a great boon if all clergymen delegated one day per week for qualified volunteer members of their congregation to help counsel those distraught wives and mothers, or angry husbands and fathers? “Wouldn’t this be an ideal way to help stop divorce and also juvenile delinquency, plus drunkenness and cruelty to children? “In my viewpoint, this would be a superb type of ‘home missionary’ work by which competent lay counselors could donate a few hours per week. “Many dedicated fathers already devote their time to the Boy Scouts, as do similarly dedicated women to the Girl Scouts and Camp Fire Girls organizations. “And it would relieve the clergy of a great drain on their busy schedules, for many distraught wives may require several lengthy counseling sessions at the outset. “Dr. Crane, would you please pass along my suggestions to your millions of readers and see if lay counselors couldn’t do for the churches what ‘Alcoholics Anonymous’ and ‘Parents Without Partners’ are already doing so well? “I know that many clergymen are using your newspaper booklets to help prevent divorce and parentchild friction but wouldn’t a special day be an ideal supplement to explain and direct the muddled thinking of emotionally disturbed youth, as well as married couples?
