Dear Abby: Don't get nose out of joint over cosmetic surgery

DEAR ABBY: What does a person do when she comes face to face for the first time with a friend (or acquaintance) who has had cosmetic surgery like a nose job or a facelift? 1 recently ran into a woman who had just had a facelift, and with absolute sincerity, I said, "Your recent surgery has , improved your appearance 100 percent!” She gave me an icy stare and walked away without even saying thank you. I felt like 2 cents. Another time, I pretended I didn’t notice that a friend had recently had a nose job. It was obvious, but I said nothing. Finally, she said, "Don’t you notice anything different about me?” I felt foolish. Of course I’d noticed, but after having learned my lesson with the face-lift lady, 1 didn’t want to mention it. So tell me, Dear Abbv, what is a person supposed to do? STUMPED DEAR STUMPED: Since vanity prompts most people to have cosmetic surgery, to ignore it would be unkind. But to comment too enthusiastically may give

the impression that her (or his) former appearance was dreadful, which is worse. If the improvement is conspicuous, say, “You look great!” They’ll get the message without having to decode it. * * * DEAR ABBY: I’m 24 and always felt I had a lot of common sense as well as being fairly intelligent, but apparently I was wrong. People who cared about me were constantly after me to stop smoking not for their sake, but for mine. My standard answer was, “I have a lot on my mind right now, major decisions to make, etc., but as soon as things calm down I’ll quit smoking.” Meanwhile I was smoking 2'/j packs a day. Not until I read your article about National Smokeout Day did I realize I wasn’t being honest with

myself. It’s easy to say, “I’ll quit tomorrow.” But if you can quit tomorrow, why not today? After reading your column, I quit cold turkey. So thanks for making me see the light. Hints from Heloise Six-pack holders store Christmas wrap

DEAR HELOISE: I’ve always saved those plastic six-ring can holders, knowing someday I’d find a use for them... While putting away the Christmas things today, I almost automatically reached for the rings to slide the tubes of wrapping paper into! Some of the smaller tubes won’t fit, though sometimes two tubes will fit into one ring. However, when stored on the shelf, the rings keep the tubes from rolling, even if they are a bit loose, as I put one six-pack holder at each end of the tubes. I’ve never had my Christmas wraps so neat. I also store rolls of non-seasonal paper this way, stacking it on top for easier access. Mary Balmediano ★ * * Boy! You sure got through the holiday festivities with your wits intact. Storing those “uncooperative” tubes is a

real hassle and I think you’ve come up with a nifty solution to the problem. Thanks from all of us.—Heloise EASE’EM OFF Dear Heloise: To get tightfitting rubber gloves off without tugging and tearing them, put a drop of liquid detergent in each one and hold your hands under running warm water from the faucet. Let the gloves fill with the water and they will slip right off. Ruby Laws RINSE-HAND WATER Dear Heloise: I draw a pan of comfortably hot water and place a hand towel beside it as the first step toward cooking. By rinsing my hands in this when necessary, I no longer have sticky hands to contend with or faucet handles to clean. But the big bonus is that the warm rinse is more comfortable to my arthritis-prone fingers than a quick jet of cold tap water. Mrs. John Bean
