Ford and Celtics denied Clippers' Williams to win
B> The Associated Press It wasn’t the best Boston Celtic offense but then it didn’t have to be, the way the defense was playing. “Our defense saved us." underscored Coach Bill Fitch. Chris Ford was a big part of it Thursday night, holding highpowered Freeman Williams to just six points as the Celtics beat the San Diego Clippers 8885 for their 12th straight National Basketball Association victory. ‘I tried to deny him the ball and keep him from going to the middle," said Ford of his defensive work on Williams, who had been averaging 30 points over the Clippers' most recent dine games and 19.7 overall. “I got a lot of help from our big men. We have a lot of intimidators." The Celtics nailed down the game on Cedric Maxwell’s three-point play with seven seconds left. "We played good enough to win,” said San Diego Coach Paul Silas. "A couple of plays here and there, and we would have had it.”, » In other NBA action, Portland beat Denver 122-119 and Legal Notices NOTICE OF PROPOSED BANK MERGER Notice is hereby given that the Putnam County Bank, Roachdale, Indiana has made application to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Washington, D C. 20429, for its written consent to merge with the Tri-County Bank and Trust Company, Roachdale. Houston stopped Utah 117-103. With the Celtics trailing 85-83, Maxwell stole the ball with about 20 seconds to play. After Boston moved downcourt, the 6-foot-8 forward made a layup and was fouled by Phil Smith. Maxwell then converted the free throw to give Boston an 8685 lead. Trail Blazers 122, Nuggets 119 Kelvin Ransey scored a ca-reer-high 29 points, including Portland's last eight, to lead the Trail Blazers over Denver. Ransey also had nine assists and five rebounds in leading the Blazers to their fifth straight victory and 14th in 15 games. The loss snapped Denver’s season-high winning string at two games. The Nuggets’ David Thompson barely missed a three-point field goal try that would have tied the game at the buzzer. Rockets 117, Jazz 103 Rudy Tomjanovich scored 25 points and three other Houston players combined for 64 as the Rockets broke open a close game in the fourth quarter to beat Utah. Worry Clinic
By 3eorge W. Crane, Ph.D., M.D
Freda cringes when her generous dad pats her on the shoulder or drapes his arm around her. So she fears she may be a frigid wife when she marries. Note how her “complex” developed! CASE W-695: Freda Z„ aged 20, is a very attractive coed, but afraid she may become a frigid wife. “Dr. Crane,” she began, “my father has been very generous about sending me to college. “For he isn’t a wealthy man and you know that college now costs a fortune. “But whenever he pats me on the shoulder or starts to drape his arm around me, I shrink away and I don’t know why. “Does this mean I will be a frigid wife if I ever get married?” DEPTH COUNSELING In this medicopsychological column I try to show you readers the indepth analysis of many human problems that complicate our lives and lead to divorce, vandalism as well as hostility between children and parents. So I had a 2-hour session with Freda, for from past experience I had guessed what was the likely cause of her cringing when her father even touched her with his hand. It all went back to the time she was a 3-year-old and had broken a valuable vase that was an heirloom from her great grandmother • on her father’s side. In his angry explosion, he had spanked her soundly until she was screaming with pain and shock at his violent mood. Nowadays we urge that when you may occasionally need to apply corporal punishment, you employ a hairbrush or paddle or a switch, but not the human hand! For babies, toddlers and even grammar schoolers subconsciously view the hand as the love-contact between themselves and their parents. It should thus remain the symbol of affection of parent for child and not be viewed

as a frightening instrument of pain. Children occasionally need the infliction of pain to remind them not to indulge in certain naughty actions that are definitely taboo. But PLEASE employ an intermediary paddle or hairbrush so the child’s pain and possible resentment do not attach to your hands! Although Freda was only 3 years old at the time of her daddy’s severe spanking, she was then subconsciously “brainwashed” against her daddy’s hand. After we dug up the causative incident at age 3, and showed her why she still cringed when he laid his hand on her, she relaxed and began to understand the nervous mechanism underlying her tendency to cringe and pull away from him. Such “conditioning” pertains to a specific person and usually is not transferred to a boy friend or husband.
